Dishwasher Diagnostic Mode: find out why your Kitchenaid won’t work

Why isn’t your Kitchenaid dishwasher working? Figure it out using diagnostic mode. This is the hack the appliance repair person doesn’t want you to know. Save the $100 service call and fix it yourself!
In this video the error codes show that there is either a problem with the fill valve or the float switch. I replaced both with these parts:
- Float Switch (Amazon link amzn.to/382ScaT )
- Fill Valve (Amazon link amzn.to/2KRjGHS )
See my other videos for more information on how to repair common issues for your Kitchenaid, Whirlpool, Jenn-Air, Maytag, Amana, or Roper dishwasher. These techniques should work for similiar models from any of these brands as they are all manufactured by Whirlpool.
This is a Kitchenaid KDTE104ESS1 dishwasher.

I fixed my dishwasher with these parts: - Float Switch (Amazon link amzn.to/382ScaT ) - Fill Valve (Amazon link amzn.to/2KRjGHS )

Why did you need both parts Nate. They are mutually exclusive for me.
@NateFixesIt
@NateFixesIt Год назад
@@kingsxkids the code doesn’t tell you which of the parts it is. They are both pretty inexpensive, so I ordered them both. Would rather have the dishwasher fixed than order the wrong one and wait a few days for the other part to arrive.

I had the same (6/4) error code and fixed it for free. My filter in the bottom of the DW was clean, which is deceptive. I had a slightly clogged drain line running to my disposal. It did drain but not well enough - I guess. I unhooked the line (my drain line is 1/2" pex which is probably too small) at the disposal and blew 125 psi air threw it - back into the dishwasher. Do this with the door shut if you're going to try it or you will make a colossal mess. The drain line just had muck in it. That cleared the clog. I then took the kick panel off the bottom of the DW and there was water in the little white pan that the float switch sits in. That was what was tripping the float switch. I cleaned that up and put it back together and that fixed the problem. I assume the main drain line couldn't drain properly and that caused water to back up in the bottom of the DW and that water overflowed through the overflow tube into the float switch pan. The float switch tripped and shut down the DW. There was nothing wrong with the switch. It was just doing its job. If you have this issue make sure you're fixing the problem, not the result of the problem. If the float switch trips it's because the DW can't drain properly. There's a good chance your filter will look clean but the drain line is mucked up. If you don't have a compressor and an air chuck - buy one. It's cheaper than calling a repairman and then you'll also have a compressor! By the way - this is the exact same procedure for clearing the condensation drain line from your A/C air handler inside your house. If your unit shuts down for no known reason find the p trap inside the closet, attached to the unit, and there will be a removable float switch in the top of the p trap. If the line is full of water because it's mucked up with algae, just use that brand new compressor and air chuck to blow out the drain line. Pour some bleach down the line to kill the algae and reinstall the float switch. That will probably save you $300-$400 bucks on a simple service call.

Thank you Nate and all those who do what you do and try to help people with repair A couple of thoughts, I came across a movement called "right to repair" could you speak to that? Also for all of us that are capable of fixing things if we know what the problem is. We are being ripped off for parts usually there is not much you can do about that but some times yes. The little black switch in the door mech. used on many types of appliances are called microswitches they wanted $ 26.00 for mine those can be sourced for about $2.00! last year the defrost timer on my freezer went bad priced from about 50 to 70 I found it for $12. Almost all the appliance manufacturers by the parts from some place else if you can locate the source you can save $$$. Again thanks Nate

Hi, I had Water run over and apparently get in to the electronic panel on the top and will only blink, clean and beep. I let it dry out a couple days turn the power completely off to it with the breaker. None of the buttons work except for cancel. What do you suggest?
@NateFixesIt

Unfortunately, I’m guessing that the computer controls are permanently damaged and either the control panel or the dishwasher will need to be replaced. Based on the age of the dishwasher, and the cost of the control panel, you may decide either way.

Hi Nate, I have model KUDL021RBS1. Key pad is in front. I have pressed buttons and all the light light up, but not sure what it should do. There isn’t anything blinking. I haven’t dealt with this issue myself, but here is a website that has some tips: readytodiy.com/kitchenaid-dishwasher-blinking-flashing-0052/ . I would start by cutting power to the dishwasher by turning off the breaker for 15 minutes, this will force the dishwasher to restart its internal computer. From what I’ve read, another likely issue is a short in the control panel, which could require replacement of the control panel.

@NateFixesIt
@NateFixesIt 9 месяцев назад
That’s some odd behavior. It could be an issue with the control panel or the thermal fuse. I would suggest restarting the control panel to see if that fixes the issue. To restart the control panel you need to cut power to the unit for a minute. If the dishwasher has a plug, in plug it, but most likely you will need to flip the appropriate breaker off for a minute.

What buttons do this is model dependent. If the buttons above don’t match. Try the three left most buttons and the three right most buttons. For some models any three buttons in order will work. If none of those work for you, you’ll need to provide the model number. Feel free to try any of the combos, it won’t hurt anything to try them.

@NateFixesIt

If the control panel is completely unresponsive, check to make sure that you are still getting power to the dishwasher. Make sure that nothing is unplugged and the breaker hasn’t tripped. If everything looks right, try turning the breaker off and then back on to restart the dishwasher computer. If that doesn’t help, it’s most likely a bad control panel, which, unfortunately, is a pretty expensive part.

@PeterBalletta
@PeterBalletta 6 месяцев назад
I tried a difference sequence that I found in your comments. After a couple of tries I managed to get it to respond and it displayed an error code 71. I referenced it on the internet and it says something about the heater?? The dishwasher takes a while to start and then stops after not even a minute. It seems like it just isn't washing. It takes 3-3 1/2 hours to complete a cycle and dishes are not clean and everything is wet. Thanks for any insight.
@NateFixesIt
@NateFixesIt 6 месяцев назад
If you’re setting the dishwasher for a heated dry and everything is coming out wet (but not standing water in the bottom of the dishwasher), it could be a bad heating element (which aligns with your error code). Cold water will not clean as well as hot water. If you have standing water in the bottom, it’s probably a pump issue. I have not done this myself, but if you have a multimeter, you should be able to check the resistance of the heating element to see if it’s gone bad. I’m guessing there is a RU-vid video out there that could show you how.

Were you able to run a diagnostic test and did it identify anything? It sounds like a bad heater element. The heating element is used both to heat the water for a wash cycle and to dry the dishes. If you have a multimeter, you should be able to check the element resistance to see if it’s gone bad. I haven’t had to do this repair myself, but you should be able to find a video from someone else who has.

I can’t find specific instructions for your model; but, based on the way it is responding it does sound like you are getting to diagnostic mode and that the dishwasher isn’t showing error codes (doesn’t mean nothing is wrong, just means the dishwasher doesn’t know what it is if there is a problem). @@MrYoungj99 are you having any issues other than dishes not coming out clean? Can you hear it filling with water and spraying? If the filter is clean, it’s filling with water, and spraying water, check the holes in the sprayer arms to make sure that they are all clear. Using hot water will also make a difference, so if the heating element is bad, that can affect how clean your dishes get. Even if your dishwasher fills off of the hot line, if the faucet isn’t run ahead of time to get hot water into the pipes before it fills, you are putting cold water into the dishwasher. Try running the kitchen faucet until the water runs hot before starting the dishwasher.

@NateFixesIt
@NateFixesIt 2 месяца назад
Two possibilities: 1. That’s the right combination, but your dishwasher hasn’t self-identified a problem. 2. Your model has a different diagnostic mode key stroke. You can try using the same sequence as in the video, but use the left most buttons in the order 1-2-3-1-2-3-1-2-3 or try “HEAT DRY, NORMAL, HEAT DRY, NORMAL”. If neither of those work, there is usually an info sheet hidden behind the toe kick plate, it may say the combo on it.

@NateFixesIt

I can’t find specific instructions for your model; but, based on the way it is responding it does sound like you are getting to diagnostic mode and that the dishwasher isn’t showing error codes (doesn’t mean nothing is wrong, just means the dishwasher doesn’t know what it is if there is a problem). Another possibility is that you may need to advance through the diagnostics. I’ve never used this technique, but near the bottom of the article of the link here, it discusses how to move through various diagnostics on some models. machinelounge.com/kitchenaid-dishwasher-diagnostic-mode/

But after a few seconds, the 3 lights turned off without any diagnostic code on the “clean” light. I guess it never went in diagnosis mode. How do I enter the diagnosis mode on my Kitchenaid dishwasher kude70cvss0? The dishwasher runs fine with plenty of water for first 10 minutes. Then, after the soap pod drops to the bottom of dishwasher, it just makes noise but not water comes. Appreciate your help
@NateFixesIt
@NateFixesIt 2 года назад
I can’t find any other information on a different way to access diagnostic mode on that model, so my guess is that you are entering diagnostic mode, but the dishwasher isn’t self-identifying any issues. Is the dishwasher filling, spraying, and then draining on the pre-rinse cycle before the soap drops? When you open the dishwasher and the soap has dropped, is there water in it? If there is water, can you tell if it is the leftover rinse water or fresh water for the wash cycle?
@ameetpatil
@ameetpatil 2 года назад
@@NateFixesIt Yes, the dishwasher is filling, spraying and then draining the water before soap drops. When I open after the soap drops there is no water. But the dishwasher makes mechanical sounds as if it is spraying the water after the soap drops. Could this be a float switch or some valve issue? By the way, since not all the lights on the control panel come up after pressing those 3 buttons in sequence thrice, I don’t think it is entering diagnostic mode.
@NateFixesIt
@NateFixesIt 2 года назад
@@ameetpatil without being there to troubleshoot, my three guesses are (in order of cheapest to fix): 1. Float switch issue (before replacing, try moving the float up and down inside the dishwasher and continuing the cycle) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wXFZFor5p8I.html 2. Fill valve issue (before replacing, take the cover off of the bottom of the dishwasher and listen to the sounds the fill valve makes when it starts the cycle and actually fills, see if it makes any of those sounds when it should fill the second time) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0fbn-ytbGWw.html 3. Control panel issue I can’t guarantee it’s one of these, but that’s the order I would try if it was my dishwasher. The first two are fairly easy and inexpensive things to replace. I’m not sure if they are your problem, but they could help you with the process of elimination. I have included links to the videos that show how to do those changes on my dishwasher. I don’t have a video for a circuit card replacement, but I would think someone else on RU-vid will. @@NateFixesIt We had it looked at by a KitchenAid tech who was at the house on a problem with the refrigerator. He said to replace the entire pump assembly (3 pumps). We can't figure out how to trigger the self-identified code using the buttons. The dishwasher is loud and noisy all through the cleaning cycle, filling, washing, and draining. Plus the dishes on the bottom rack are never clean. The tech said a diverter may not be working

Even after replacing the one pump, its still noisy

You may be activating the diagnostic mode, but the dishwasher hasn’t self identified the problem. I would guess that the circulation pump is either not working properly (thus no, or little flow to the bottom spray arm) or a stuck diverted that is pumping the water out at the start of the cycle instead of circulating it. You could start a cycle, wait for it to fill and then start circulating for a few minutes, then open up the dishwasher and see if it still has water in it to get a better idea.

Thanks for the info! I ran that sequence and the indicator light is staying on solid with no flashes. Assuming it’s not getting any errors. The problem I’m having is that when I hit start, it goes through its normal automation for about a minute. Then, the motor makes and off and on sound and then after about a minute it beeps and indicates the wash is complete. No water comes out and nothing happens. It’s a brand new machine with only 2 loads. I tried turning the breaker on and off but still doing it. Have a maintenance warranty person on the schedule but 3 weeks out. I did some inspecting and can’t see anything wrong? Any ideas?

I actually tried running the load again and it flashed 8-1 (no water). Checked the valve and boom, it was shut off. I had a brand new faucet installed 2 days after the new dishwasher was installed and they must have turned off the line. Thanks for the great/easy to follow vid.

When I run through this, the light stays on and does not blink, no matter how long I wait. Anyone know what this indicates?

If the external light stays on solid during diagnostic mode, that means the dishwasher hasn’t detected an error. Doesn’t mean there isn’t something wrong, just that if there, your dishwasher hasn’t figured out what. What is the issue that you are having?

Almost certainly a control board. It just doesn’t know it’s bad much like a car when the pcm is faulty there will be no codes. Think of it as a person that’s gone crazy but insists they’re normal. ;)

@@NateFixesIt thank you very much for the response! It wasn't draining. Dishwasher is only 14 months old, just out of warranty. I reset the motherboard by using instructions I found elsewhere. Ran two normal cycles with cleaner, and they ran completely. Then tried a load of dishes. First time did not complete--flashing light--but second time did. Did another load, same result. So, it's intermittently still not draining.

@@ska4me could be a number of issues: Bad control board, bad float switch, bad pump, or loose wiring to name a few. If you haven’t removed the dishwasher recently or done anything that would jar the connections, I would rule out loose wiring. Since the pump is still working intermittently, I would guess it’s not the pump. Between bad board and bad float switch, I would try the float switch first if you aren’t ready to call the repairman yet. Float switch is easier to replace and MUCH cheaper if you want to try it first. This video shows how: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wXFZFor5p8I.html. I haven’t had to replace a control board, so I don’t have a video for that, but other people on RU-vid do. Good luck!
