Historically dragoons were not cavalry they were mounted infantry whom would then dismount at the battle

Wow what an incredible tactic, def gonna try this one out. Something else I need to do with more testing is in the data tables rank firing and platoon firing units get reload bonuses. So theoretically regular dragoons can get off more volleys than light goons but it’s pretty marginal because of mobility and not getting all your shots out at once. Still I think this explains why regular goons are more expensive

Hey Dixon! I have noticed that regular dragoons only fire first rank and I have not seen them rank fire but I might need to double check. What I have been doing with reg dragoons is spreading them out all the way so they can fire all men. It does leave them venerable to melee but it does also let them take less damage in a fire fight.

When I'm being attacked, I use my light dragoons to super-fire over the heads of my infantry. They're especially helpful in keeping the enemys infantry away from my arty. That 120 range and their accuracy make for a deadly fire zone in front of my arty. They're also useful if I get attacked while behind the walls of a fortified city. They're deadly in a small building or super-firing over the artillery support. Quite possibly my favorite type of unit.

I use the dragoons for flanking since they can dismount/remount so quickly you can maneuver them all around the battle field and give you the edge if you push properly with your main infantry units. This is especially useful if the enemy doesn't have much in way of cavalry. I usually flank them to a tree line or some other defensible location near an enemies flank. If they over commit on trying to kill your dragoons you just mount them back up and run away while making a harder push on their main infantry lines when they lose the support of their chase units.

Love those units too but light dragoon’s can dismount or fire while mounted has 60 men with 50 accuracy and 20 ammo. If deli had 20 vs just 10 they would be amazing

@@FaramirsRangers what about French Chasseurs? They can melee but also dismount and shoot with their carbines in earlier iterations of Empire Total war I have played, is it still the same?

Ntw is very good for multiplayer but I never liked it much for campaign. Fots is solid outing but I have not played it very much

I am 100% guilty of sticking dragoons in a city just for the policing benefit 😂, at least now you've got me thinking about best use for my units !

@@FaramirsRangers I think I'm guilty in all my campaigns for leaving too many units as garrisons, that was my personal playstyle but I'm trying too change that in my LP's. I like too research quickly but I'm trying to hold to 3/4 colleges in ETW/NTW. I saw a video years ago on what the optimal number of Gentlemen was for each college before their was diminishing returns i think it was 2/3 only in Vanilla ETW.

ive used them before because i was in a pinch and needed to fill a hole in my line to avoid being out flanked while i waited for line inftanty to arrive

So is artillery like a faux pas in these online battles? Because one could just howitzer those woods to try and get you out of there.

If we had capturing of points like in shogun. Maybe that would be. Maybe even occupying buildings where trying to get a foothold in a position would warrant it

I use them as a raiding force. Few units move really quick and can fight as infantry if caught. Thats in campaign though. In a pitched battle i tend to keep them mounted or use them as a flank force as intended. Gonna have to try that trick though.

I like the raiding party idea. I have used something similar using plains nation in multiplayer with their dog soldiers. I view them as my xviii century paratroopers:)

I like them for Siege battles. I ride them towards undefended walls or gates and dismount them to climb them and capture or just waste the enemy's time by having them rotate units to other places. Idk if Im doing good but I usually pair dragoons, grenadiers and a bunch of mortars for sieges.

If you combine dragoons, light dragoons and horse drawn artillery, thisi s a highly mobile and effective as well as flexible force. You can beat enemies to important portions of the battlefield, assault na enemy position to the rear,etc.

Honestly, I never dismount dragoons unless in a siege purpose.

That used to be the same for me until I just started experimenting with it a few years ago. It is kinda a cool tactic not many use. I have developed a few different tactics for them dismounting.

Dragoons are amazing when assaulting a fortification, especially against the AI. The AI responds quickly but not well so it’s almost always possible to draw most the of the AI’s attention to a breach or some units climbing up a wall, then charge the Dragoons out of cover to the other side of the fortification to dismount and get them up and over the wall and into the buildings mostly unopposed. This either takes pressure off the breach or other primary assault point or allows you a lot of flexibility when deciding whether to commit reserves to another assault point or use them to support the primary or the Dragoon force.

Sometimes I dismount them if I need some extra skirmishers. In a siege I only keep them mounted if the enemy is getting reinforcements.

I did a whole singleplayerkampange only using light dragoons (difficulty „easy“ tho). I deleted all my armys exept 2 generals and waited for the research so i could start winning… and i won! Was fun although it’s frustrating how easy kanons can rip through horses

They can also be quite deadly in choke points. It is really due to the fact all men volley at once. As soon as a unit comes in range you can blast them and run before they can even get a shot in sometimes.

Well the Comanche used bows on horses and reports say they could shot 3 times before the first arrow struck all with accuracy and on the move. No one bothered to try to settle their territory. Not until the Texas rangers got repeating fire pistols which they carried 3 of to match the fire power of the Comanche did they end their dominance

Mortars are so inaccurate. Plus it is difficult to keep them protected, especially against dragoon’s.

Actually I play with a group and we play every day. Some have been playing since game came out. With a game of this age the multiplayer community is a mixed group of people with all levels of experience. In this particular battle no player is inexperienced. Also keep in mind with a 4 v 4 it is not how good a person is individually but rather how well they play as a team. I have known some players who are the best 1v1 players in the game but the worst team mate you could dream of.

In lots of ways, some depicted here, some not. One key advantage they had however that doesn't really get replicated in the game as such is they could be sent ahead of the army as a quick reaction or occupying force. Need boots on the ground in a village that has little if any resistance but main army is 4 days away? Well cavalry can get there in a day depending on conditions... Then they can dismount and hey presto they're garrison infantry.
