If snow white wasn't successful we probably wouldn't have movies like Fantasia, the Lion King, Spirited Away, heck we probably wouldn't even have any of the CGI ones like Toy Story, Disputable Me, and How to train your Dragon.
Most definitely. Hollywood is such a copycat industry, both for successes and failures, and if Snow White bombed like it was supposed to, even if we did have animated features today (which is a big if), they would be nowhere near as elaborate, mature, or expensive as we've come to expect, and would probably lean more towards G rating/risk free/cheap stuff.
I was just about to write that, and that is so true! People keep overlooking this film by focusing on CGI features like "Up," the "Toy Story" trilogy, "How to train your Dragon," "Frozen," "Tangled," "Hotel Transylvania," "Shreck," and alot more! Everyone needs to realize that if it wasn't for Disney, we probably wouldn't have anything like those features, and that's another reason hand drawn animation still deserves to be kept alive, They set the basics of all animation like how "Toy Story" set the basics of CGI.
When Walt expressed concern about the colour ladies getting Snow White's facial pallete and placement correct, one replied: "What do you think we do every morning?" 😀
To answer your question in 10:08, "it's Florian". Why do I know that, you ask? Look up the Disney chronicles and you'll find a retelling of this famous movie, but still being true to the original.
Walt Disney and fellow animators must of worked really really really REALLY hard to make this film a huge major success for his first film he ever made
Someone sitting behind megastars Clark Gable & Carole Lombard heard sniffles at the grieving-elves scene. Whole audiences were crying at drawings on celluloid - a history-changing incredibility at the time.
Wow, this was a great video, love how it is just not a review but gives a history of the development of the film. I will be watching your entire library of video from now on. Also an idea I had for a video series was to compare the original source material to the disney version of Snow White or other disney movies, I think that would be interesting to see.

I guess what I found fascinating is that you almost never see a reprise gain more popularity than the original, especially when the original was a big show number, and the reprise just sorta happened haha
Joe The Disney Guy Haha yeah, the reprise is usually just added as an after thought, the only exceptions I can think of are Prince Ali, Bells of Notre Dame and Part of Your World.
I love you’re more recent reviews and thought I’d watch you’re oldest review and I really enjoyed it but it did seem like most of the history information in the beginning was from the documentary of the making of Snow White, I could be wrong though. However the, “It’s home from work we go” fact was mind boggling and I think that you’re research of the films in your reviews now are way better and you clearly put lots of hard work into finding them. It’s great to see how far you’ve come as a content creator!
Oh man the feelings I get all the time hearing about the struggles Walt went trought to make this movie. It´s so inspiering. The biggest reason I always have loved Disney movies. Even when I was young I just saw something with this movies, even thought I never knew how old they really were, I could still see the diffrence in style for the drawings, humour, songs and a lot of other things. I mean look at the backgrounds for the Dwarfes house, the pillars are detailed, everysingle thing in there kitchen is made to look like something handmade with love and care. Say what ever you like about Disney today. But this, the true spirit of Disney will always be there, even if you don´t know it. Like Walt used to say - Everyone have once been a child, and all of us got this little bright inocent light inside us that will never die or be forgotten. And Disney movies are made to bring that light out.
Ahturo s Couldn't have said it better myself. I always go back and forth as to which I like better, Snow White or the story behind Snow White because they're both great. It's the movie that started it all and it's still a classic to this day
Thank you, and yup, I plan on working my way through all 53(through probably by the time I get there it will be more like 55) animated classics before heading into Pixar, combination films, and of course the live action stuff. Plenty of ideas to go around!
The banker Rosenberg apparently said nothing all through the film and even while heading out of the screening room. At the door he turned and said something like, "That film will make a lot of money."
No name adds mythic-mysterious quality to the Prince. Marilyn Monroe in "The Seven Year Itch" is another (iconic) example. Also a name matters much less than the upswing - from deep despair to rescue by royalty!
This was another Disney movie that I watched often as a kid. Snow White is one of my favorite Disney Princesses (And yes, I'm a guy who likes the Disney Princesses). I like how sassy she is towards Grumpy and how she acts like a stern mother towards the dwarfs. Plus, she is sooo hot! I do agree with some of the criticism towards her, but I still do like her a lot. I like Hiegh Ho, the yodeling song, Someday My Prince Will Come is a classic, and I like Whistle While You Work. I do wish that the villain had a song though. If I could describe this film in one word, it would be, 'timeless.' It doesn't have the most engaging story, but in my opinion, it is the equivalent of the stories that we heard from our parents at night before we were tucked into bed. When you watch this movie, you feel like you're stepping into that story. It's a treasure that has remained timeless and will be enjoyed by many generations to come.
Yeah, you have to remember that this was 1937, so story wise, just putting a family friendly version of the fairy tale on the screen was good enough. If it were released today, it'd probably need more depth, but considering that the movie is almost 77 years old now, I'd say timeless is a good adjective for it. And it's fine being a guy who likes Disney Princesses! They're very likable after all haha

True with the hi ho song. But the verse we sing the most is sung in the movie it's self. When the dwarfs go to the mines they sing it as " off to work we go"

My biggest complaint with the movie is that I feel the demise of the Evil Queen is too rushed and there are so many coincidences. I think it would have been better if the Evil Queen had escaped before the Dwarfs got back home and returns to the castle and the dwarfs don’t ever see the Queen. I wish that her death was done better like maybe she died in rage when finding out Snow White is still alive like in one of the original tales ending. Or I might have liked it if she had watched the dwarfs come home from afar on top of a cliff and while she gloats at their sadness, a storm starts and lightning strikes the cliff.

Well actually the “heigh ho” song is in two scenes of the movie on the way home from work they sing “heigh ho heigh ho it’s home from work we go” but when they go back to work the scene before Snow White bites the apple they sing “heigh ho heigh ho it’s off to work we go”
Thank you for you wonderful review on Snow White This is my favorite film Along with Tarzan, Emperor's New Groove, Lady and the Tramp, Brother Bear and Bambi I really don't see this film as Disney's folly at all

Our family is doing a similar challenge, we're watching all of the Disney Animated Theatrical releases in order and figuring out which one is "The Ultimate Disney Movie" based on our checklist of what makes a "typical" Disney movie. It's been a lot of fun to do this together, and it means that we're FINALLY getting to see some Disney classics that we may never have watched! Always fun to go through movies like this, as it helps you see the progression of the studio and also, like you said, forces you to see movies that you may have missed. And hmm....typical Disney movie.....may have to be a future list haha

I remember watching Snow White as a child & not thinking much of it. After recently rewatching the film I've been able to look at it in a better light. Though hardly know anything about technical things, my main focus was on the plot & the characters. My favorite characters were the dwarfs by far! They had the most personality & were incredibly funny! Hearing the background has deepened my fascination! Although Snow White may not be one of my all time personal favorites, that doesn't make me any less amazed by the film!
Yeah, really, in this time period, especially when you consider that they really didn't know how animation would fly as a feature, the characters and plot were vitally important. Of course, as it turns out, animation was a big hit, so the movie as a whole has become a wonder and a standard for animation

This an amazing behind the scenes story of Snow White and the seven dwarfs. I'm a huge Disney fanatic myself and been following the Disney origin history ever since I've learned about your channel Joe. I'm inspired by your channel and I hope you keep going with it. If you ask me they should make a movie on How Walt put together Snow White and the Seven dwarfs. Ive read a lot more behind it and they should consider making a film out of it. what do you think?
It’s been almost 6 years since this came out. He’s only on movie 28, The Little Mermaid. By that logic, he’s probably not going to finish this until 2023-2024, over 10 years after he began it.
As a kid, I never knew how old movies like "Snow White," "Pinocchio," and "Cinderella" were because I've always thought that their animation looked more amazing than most of the Renissance films.
I must say that the Prince WAS given a name. At least when the Disney Prince franchise started. (Come to think of it, I don't think it's even a real name). "Florian"
I still say they were too late on it, because I know for a fact that in the movie, he's known as the Prince, though I suppose it's good to know he was eventually named haha

Keep in mind that Hi-ho, (if I spelled that correctly,) was sung twice in the film. Once coming home, & once leaving again the morning. In the reprise, the lyrics are "off to work". (Please correct me if I'm wrong, this is all from memory & I'm not entirely sure if I'm right...)
Haha you may be right about that, but I maintain that when people think Heigh Ho, they think that big scene of them returning home from work, so it is odd to me why "off to work" somehow took precedent over "home from work," but hey, it's just one of those quirks that comes up in movie quotes sometimes
The part when the evil queen shows her hands scared me but besides that I enjoy the movie. Yeah seems like not enough for explanation but it's really a beginning of greatness
I like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves better as a piece of animation history, not as an actual movie. When I watch Snow White, all I see is a common fairy tale, with everything that comes with it. I think it's easier to like Snow White when one pretends he/she is in the 1930s. That way, one can be more impressed by the animation. When one knows this is the first American animated film and the first hand-drawn movie, that makes it easier to appreciate what Walt Disney and his crew had to do to make this. I still respect Snow White as a piece of history, it's only as I am today that I find problems.
And thus, Disney’s folly became his greatest triumph. Without Snow White, there wouldn’t be any animated movies today. And there would be no Disneyland/Disney world, or the Disney Princess for that matter.
You know what sucks? Here in Germany this movie was dubbed three times for some reason. And the first two dubs aren't avalable at all, although Disney still has these dubs. The same thing happened to every Disney Movie made before the 1960s excluding Peter Pan. Which is a shame because not only are the now current dubs considered not nearly as good als the original ones, but older generations will never experience these movies the way they remember them. Disney's reasoning for not releasing the Original German dubs? "They are so old practically no one knows them anymore."
I know it has been almost 7 years now and you probably know this by now, but that is actually not true. There were animated films that came before it like 'The Adventures of Prince Achmed' which came out in 1926. There were animated films released before it which are considered lost which leaves Prince Achmed as the oldest surviving animated film.
In fact, Walt Disney himself never claim that Snow White was the first animated movie ever made. If you look at the original Snow White poster or the theatrical trailer from 1937 you will notice that it clearly only says "Walt Disney in His First Full-Length Animated Production". Obviously, Snow White was technically far superior to any animated film created up to that moment, it was also an overwhelming success around the world and it was a film that marked a before and after in the history of animation, therefore, eventually, many people began to mistakenly call it "The First Animated Movie."

Hey, Joe. I heard that there was a theory where Snow White actually died and the Queen killed the Prince and the Prince's ghost kissed her and Snow White said "Good bye" to the dwarfs knowing that she'll never see them again and the castle is in heaven. But that's really impossible. The Queen read out loud that "Victim of the Sleeping Death can be revived only by Love's First Kiss". So, that means Snow White was NOT dead. Just asleep. The Prince was searching for Snow White for and near heard of Snow White being in the glass coffin and he remembered seeing Snow White and gave her the kiss.
How would you react if you looked in the mirror and The Slave of the Magic Mirror appeared instead of you? I've always considered the Queen/the Magic Mirror to be the most intimidating looking Disney villains.
I love you videos and this review, although Quick note: Although Snow White is the first animated feature in North America, is not really the first animated feature ever. The first animated feature was The Adventures of Prince Achmed. Still great review though. :)
ZecoaTheDiesel There was actually a number of animated features before Snow White, but like you said, this was the first one in North America and was actually the first fully traditionally animated feature. Others, including The Adventures of Prince Achmed, used a style called "silhouetting," which basically involves solely black figures silhouetted by backlighting

i found this movie groundbreaking, great, but overrated. the plot sort of takes a backseat to dwarf-centric shenanigans in the middle of the movie (although my favorite scene in the film is the one where they're dancing and playing music), i didn't find Snow White, the character, that interesting, although i think that's more or less a product of the times, not the movie. i did like the evil queen, the dwarfs, and the animation, especially the backgrounds and the water, which is some of the best looking water iv'e ever seen. overall i give it a 8.5/10
yeah, i found it enjoyable, but there are just a few unforgivable flaws. like the prince having like, 5 minutes of screen time, although Cinderella wasn't much better in that respect
+Cal Sleeping beauty too. A three minute song? The newer movies develop this aspect better, hey, in the little mermaid they get three whole days together before getting married :)
i really love sleeping beauty though. maybe it's the art style, or just the epic feel of it, but i love that movie despite it's short coming in terms of character development.

That's because it is *new*. if you look up the recommended editions of Disney films on originaltrilogy, you can see what has changed between releases. For example, Snow White: First 'fully restored' using the original negatives by Lowry in 1994. This is also when the Masterpiece VHS and laserdiscs came out. As far as I am aware there is no home video format that has not been *reanimated*. The 2001 Platinum Edition DVD and 2009 Diamond Edition Blu-ray are bright and likely inappropriately so. Purist recommendation: Original unrestored Film reels Acceptable Alternative: The 2009 2-Disc DVD. Over restored, but they likely represent the closest to the original color palette.
From what I understand, the film was editing in 20 different languages, so although I can't say for sure, I'm under the impression that the same treatment was given for the 20 separate languages
