Disney's PERCY JACKSON And The Olympians Isn't GREAT | REVIEW

Disney's new original series- Percy Jackson and the Olympians has finished its first season, and as a fan of the books, I have thoughts on this adaptation. Some good, some bad. Whilst I did enjoy the show overall, I have to say there were a lot of creative decisions I disagreed with and held the show back from being great.
Let's discuss.

"Percy Jackson & the Olympians is a pentalogy of fantasy novels written by American author Rick Riordan, and the first book series in the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles. The novels are set in a world with the Greek gods in the 21st century, and follows the protagonist Percy Jackson, a young demigod who must prevent the Titans, led by Kronos (Cronus), from destroying the world.
The first three books were published in the United States by Miramax Books before it was folded into Hyperion Books, which published the following books. All the books were published in the United Kingdom by Penguin Books. Five supplementary books, along with graphic novel versions of each book, have also been released. As of January 2022, the books have sold more than 180 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling book series of all time.
The first book was adapted into a film titled Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief in 2010, which was commercially successful, but received mixed reviews from critics and the audience. An adaptation of the second book, titled Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, was released in 2013, also to mixed reviews. A TV series based on the novels is in development for Disney+.

They constantly avoided fight scenes. There was no hellhound, no medusa fight, no chimera fight. And the one new fight they added, the Luke fight, is a misrepresentation of Luke’s character, who didn’t fight Percy in the book because he knew that’d be stupid!

the little things they could have kept true to the story are why it's not a proper percy jackson show to me. A huge part of the books is the fact that being a halfblood is dangerous, and the only way you get around that is by learning to fight. There is next to no fighting until his fight with Ares in the last episode.

I definitely enjoyed the show overall and want more seasons but they have to be careful with season 2, a lot of people think it's the worst book meaning it could easily become even worse in the show if they keep making bad and pointless changes like with this season

I definitly think the changes were great cause they didnt change the heart of the story just got us mostly another perspective to see the story. What i think the biggest problem was the fight scence and the lenght of the episode

5:16 OMG YOU GET IT!!!! Percy going "I wish I could tell you I had some grand philosophical revelation on the meaning of life and death on the way down but my only thought really was: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH" is one of my all time favourite passages in the entire series 😂😂!!! There are so many scenes like that in the book which would have worked SO WELL in a screenplay, with well timed cuts and comedic timing. One of my biggest criticisms of the show is that it reaaally can't get the tone right. It takes itself way too seriously for its own good most of the time which just makes it come off as melodramatic and in many moments where it should have more weight and gravitas they undermine the scene by inserting comedic relief.

I'm honestly surprised with how little narration we got in the show considering it opened with Percy narrating with the first few lines of the book

@@HamzaBoujelouah I was going to say that actually. Since they opened in narration why not keep it through the whole series? I think all this problem would have been solved if it was animated. I AGREE ABOUT GABE! Terrible casting! My bf and I were so confused at first when he appeared on screen like "who is this?...wait is this suppose to be the evil 'father figure'?!" The movie Gabe was definitely better than whatever this guy was. No offense to the actor, this role just isnt meant for him. Medusa! Yes... there was no fear! They just walked in like they were visiting their gram! The lotus flower changes were sooo unnecessary. The changes you are seeing are Rick Riordan's reimagination of the books. He mentioned in an interview somewhere that the show writers are allowing him creative freedom in which he could go in and make any changes that he would have done if he rewrote the books. So some, if not all of these changes we are seeing are how Rick would reimagine writing them into the book. Im glad he is happy with his changes but at the same time, I find most of them unnecessary. What he original wrote is what I was attached too and I am open to some change sure, but so far these changes don't make sense or are just underwhelming.

the main reason i disliked the pearl change was because in the books it's stated right after percy get the pearls that no gods give gifts for free, implying their is some downside to pearls(having to leave someone behind) and throughout all the series it's stated gods can't interfere directly with quest and can't change prophecies so him giving a 4th just seems like it goes against that for me personally.

Just finished watching everything. Believe it or not, my biggest issue with the show might be Riordan's input (lower your pitchforks, let me explain), I have read a lot of Uncle Rick's Books and his writing style kinda changed over the years, the gods are a good example. Because the cast expanded so much, many of the gods, the minor ones specially, became more human and have somewhat caricature personalities. The Kane Chronicles, for example, we have Shu, the god of wind, acting like a grumpy old man with asthma because of pollution and stopping young people from having fun. In this series we meet Hades and I don't even know what he is supposed to be, he is just a guy in a suit who complains about family drama. In the books Percy describes him as someone who feels like a proper god, he wears black robes made of souls and a sits in a throne of skulls, he is an intimidating presence. You know you messed up when Echidna and other monsters of the week scared me more than Hades, I know he has a caring side of himself, but we're not supposed to see that yet and what I see isn't caring, it's pathetic. Some of the changes may have been Disney messing up (like they messed up recent projects), but I do think Rick had a big input because the series does feel like a Rick Riordan book, just not his early work (which was his best imo), almost like someone asked him "how would you write it today?".
@mutilatedpopsicles
@mutilatedpopsicles 6 месяцев назад
Like you said, his writing improved throughout the books, and in my opinion that's the beauty of books over shows, we get more of a description and insight into the character each appearance as the writer improves. In this they picked a single aspect of hades and made it his entire personality to make him look unique from other portrayals. Not to mention the important things they cut out like (spoilers if you haven't seen the latest episode) Cutting out percy's choice of either showing Gabe Medusa's head or not, in favor of Poseidon leaving it outside of the apartment for gabe to find. A CRITICAL growing/learning point for Percy removed. I honestly want to know how much sway Rick actually had when it comes to writing because it felt like nobody truly cared.
@JesusFreak98
@JesusFreak98 6 месяцев назад
@@mutilatedpopsicles That's...not what I said 😅. I said Rick's writing changed over the years, he definitely improved in the main character interactions department, he has a way of making his characters bounce off each other in a believable and enjoyable way, specially because of the sass most of them have. That said... My point was that I saw in this show some flaws that happen in Rick's later works. For example, Rick has picked a habit of using subversion of expectations that don't always land with me, which reminded me of how they portrayed Hades in the show, because we were expecting an intimidating presence and got an old man in a suit. _TLDR_ To me, there were aspects of the show that remind me of *late Rick* instead of early Rick.

Okay, so I have thoughts about this: 1) Looks are not objective. So you go girl, express your opinion. I just wanna make sure we watched the same show though. Camp Half-Blood looked boring? Hera’s throne looked boring? Mount Olympus looked boring? Percy controlling the ocean looked boring? I mean, I am not saying that I loved every set similarly, but since you seem to be fine generalizing, Imma do the same and tell you that I did enjoy the look of this show. 2) This show tried to be a faithful adaption to the books and for the most part it was, all introduced changes whether you liked them or not, did little to change the objective. So if you hated the story I’d assume you didn’t like the books either in which case there are a million other series out there to watch. No need to get hung up on this one. 3) Please remember that the actors in the show are mostly children. You are of course entitled to your opinion (even though from what I have seen so far you seem to be pretty alone with it), but if you feel the need to vomit it all over the internet please remember that fact and maybe try to be a little more generous with it :) 4) I assume even though you did not explicitly state this (but your general emphasis of boredom seems to suggest it) that you’re in fact mostly unhappy about the pacing of the show (which is critique I have seen quite often and agree with to a certain extent) and the (lack of) big action sequences. Whilst the former is a valid observation and I do hope that both Disney and the producers take some notes for season 2 (we need longer episodes!!), the latter is a little out of pocket considering this is a children’s show. Yes, I am in my twenties, as are many people that read PJO back when they came out, but Rick Riordan has always been clear about his target audience and with that in mind, I’d say the action sequences are just right. Additionally future books do get quite a bit darker so I feel that there is a potential for the show to grow up with its audience in a similar manner as the Harry Potter movies did. So in conclusion, as long as you do not go into further detail explaining your overall boredom, there is little to discuss about. Also I’m not sure you understand how children’s media work :)

The show was fine. The story its based off of was great and the show did an okay job adapting it. My biggest problem with disney plus shows is that its so obvious when they are cutting corners to save money. Seems like all the big action sequences like capture the flag, the arch, and the battle with aries were underwhelming.
@marleymarss
@marleymarss 6 месяцев назад
Either the showrunners are cutting corners to save money or either they don't know how to manage their time of what scenes may need more of this or that, without going over budget. Cause as far anyone knows, it cost 12-15 per episode. More than likely, this show was given over a 100 million of budget. And with the technology use of using this call the Volume (something the Mando show uses as well and heavily) that supposedly cuts the cost actual locations and having to rely on this Volume technology to build parts of the sets and with of course the use of green and blue screens heavily implemented. Which I think it does work from a shooting schedule standpoint, but in the long run, oh the sets look so cheap and sterilize. But maybe, that's just me. Annoyed me a lot when there's the action being build up or even a scene being set up and all of a sudden, and stupidly it cuts to literally black. It's about 3 seconds and even though that doesn't sound a lot, however, those mere 3 seconds should matter to the runtime. In almost total for each episode, 9 seconds of going to that black out thing and being wasted. And I will agree with you that many of the choreography scenes and its action sequences were so underwhelming and I was like, that's it? lol.

I knew this was gonna be mid. The comics are the best adaptation I’ve seen so far and they’ve convinced me that motion picture adaptations of Rick’s stories *need* to be animated. They blew through ~120 million to make a boring show with boring fights when they could’ve spent a fraction of that to deliver a show as entertaining as Avatar The Last Airbender, Young Justice, Invincible, etc. I’m baffled by the people who imagined things in live-action when reading the books, some of the scenes sounded so goofy and outlandish that I couldn’t imagine anything but a comic book come to life. I understand Rick felt pressure to match series like Harry Potter and Hunger Games and I think Walker Scobell has the kind of charisma to compete with the main actors from those franchises, but PJO was obviously never going to be like those books. They should’ve taken a risk and paved their own path. Great video btw, just subbed.

Every time I read the books, I picture an animated series. It would've been so good! but sadly animation is still seen as inferior to live action. My favorite adaptation so far has to be the musical though, I think they captured the book's heart and themes incredibly.

sorry last comment, but to answer your question on how he got to the empire state building so quick, it's because they changed the location that the pearls took Percy too. In the books they show up in Santa Monica in California all the way across the country, but in the show they are taken to the beach house in New York that percy and his mom go to. So Santa Monica is 2,800 miles from NYC while Montauk(the beach house) is only 100 miles, so just a 2 hour car ride👍 personally not a huge fan of this change as i wanted percy to fly but it would also make no sense why Zeus would let him fly after the deadline passed, soo they just shouldn't have changed that either lol.

1) I got a little lost in-between episode as they don't 'pick up' where the last episode ends. There seems to be bits of 'travel time and chatting' missing. The books were never released here so I relied on that cohesiveness. At the end of one episode Percy would look at his dad, then in the next episode the gang would walk into the casino (or whatever). 2) I could not watch this series in daylight, it was just too dark, and my TV brightness only goes so far! But I enjoyed the trip as a whole! It's a nice adventure to follow, I could see myself reading the books as a teen!

It doesn't mean I want it to be 100% accurate to the books, it just means I didn't like these particular changes. I mean I adore The Lightning Thief musical and they've made A LOT of changes, but I still think it's a fantastic adaptation of the book. If I looked at them without any prior knowledge I'd have no idea who they were. Compare that to the Harry Potter Movies, where we could at least tell who the characters were even if not all traits where there. I don't hate the show, I'm just very disappointed with it.

First season of Percy Jackson is mid fantasy tv show. It has good parts and some bad parts. The worst thing is the pacing, much of the time I felt bored and was watching it every week when it dropped on Disney. Maybe I should try to binge it someday to see if it is better that way but as weekly television it does not work. The story overall is not that interesting since characters are rushing throught the plot and wont let scenes to breath. Characters feel like they dont have any impact on plot and their decistion doesnt seem to matter most of the time. I feel like they would end up in the exact same place even if they would do things just differently. Characters overall are not that interestning and dont have any interesting personalities or traits. Beside Percy which I like everyone else is bland. I do like some of the casting for gods like Ares and Poseidon but everyone else are not well cast. The world has some potential to be interesting but the cinematography does not seem to fit that epicenes. As side note I really don't like they reveled the face of Poseidon in conversation with Sally and not in the finale. They could have just not show his face when we are watching Sally point of view and she does not look at him at all. It would be really impactfull moment for viewers as for Percy to finally see him at the end when he saves his son.
