Did anyone els's heart sort of melt when [in episode 3 of the re-boot] Donald blew a gasket and shouted "Give me back my boys!" then proceeded to (succesfully) take on two of the Beagly boys? I like the new relationship he has with the boys. Before in early episodes/shows with Donald and his nephews he saw them more as an annoyance (not in all the earlier adaptations but a couple of them). I wouldn't say he hated them but acted like they were just annoying kids he got stuck babysitting. However now he decides to raise them not only out of the love of his sister. He loves the boys and the boys love them which is very special to watch.
@ThePaganSun
@ThePaganSun 5 лет назад
The thing about his earlier relationship to the nephews that almost everyone forgets (including the Disney writers themselves) was that Donald adopted them when he was fairly young himself. Donald was the youngest of Mickey's friends (we could tell from his earliest appearances in the cartoons and comics) where Mickey and pals talk about spanking him. He's an orphan in his earliest portrayals, sometimes living on the street and as a way to "tame" him, Mickey, Minnie, and Clarabelle would give him more responsibilities. Mickey would let him help raising Pluto and his own nephews, Morty and Ferdie and they were the first to call Donald "Unca Donald." And when his own nephews come bicycling into his life, we still see his teenage immaturity in his reactions to them (in the early Al Taliaferro comics). Anyway, to make a long story short: Donald originally had a temper because in his earliest portrayals, he was only slightly older than a child himself and his interactions with them are pretty much how a teenager would react to be saddled with not one but three triplet kids. He's always loved them, but it was easy for him to stoop to their childish and prank-loving level because he used to be the same exact way.
@FeraNelia
@FeraNelia 3 года назад
Old comment, I know, but I just have to mention that in many of Bark's later works and in almost all of Don Rosa's comics Donald is very loving of the boys even with his temper. Don Rosa dedicated entire comic story to how Donald was the boys' "superhero" trying to do his best to take care of them despite the hardships. I feel these comic worlds have greatly expanded Donald's character from the old animated shorts.

Key points in the extant episodes: DONALD - "Can you watch them without losing them?" DONALD - "This is the Spear of Silene, all over again!" SCROOGE - "I was not responsible for the Spear of Silene!" Donald is hyper protective of his nephews and didn't want them going on adventures with Scrooge. Donald hasn't spoken to Scrooge in years. Scrooge has avoided his family (Especially the boys) since they were born, saying that family is trouble. Della Duck is missing, and left a note saying she had taken the Spear of Silene. Conclusion: Donald's sister was lost during one of Scrooge's adventures, and Donald blames his uncle for losing her. That's what's messed him up so badly in this version of the story.

Donald is probably my favorite character in the reboot. He is extremely relatable. As a kid Donald might have seemed way too overbearing, but now that I'm older I understand his fears. I don't have any children of my own yet, but I completely understand his fears. The world is a very scary place, especially right now. I loved when they gave Goofy more depth, I love the deeper story they're giving Donald, I wish they would do this for Mickey. He's become the boring everyman, at least in the cartoons. Give me more of the mischievous Mickey of the past, give me the badass Mickey from the video games. You could go into his family backstory. You got Oswald back, use him! Maybe have Mickey try to reconnect with him but Oswald is too embittered. But over time they become closer and help each other get what they want: a family.

I absolutely love this version of Donald. Something happened to his sister that clearly effected him from how he acted when Storkules asked where Dellah was. Even before that you get the sense something happened to turn him into this over protective worry wort towards his nephews and what happened to him and Scrooge. I want to know what happened to his sister and what turned him into this person we see in the show. He still throws temper tantrums and that's still funny. Besides, it's pretty refreshing to see Donald stoop to the level of his nephews in a Tom and Jerry esque fashion.

Video Guy My guess is Scrooge's greed got her offed in some way on their last adventure. Not saying killed, cartoons are iffy about that. But she is gone. And that's what made Donald drop out of adventure and into child care, and over time what broke Scrooge. He lost his family on that last adventure and could not or would not go on alone. It doesn't help that I could see Scrooge voiced by Tennant do terrifying things.

@ingonyama70
@ingonyama70 6 лет назад
As someone unfamiliar with the Barks stories, this Donald is a brand new breed of duck to me. And I ADORE him. Once upon a time, Donald was one of my favorite Disney characters. I've never had a problem understanding him (unless he degenerates into deliberately unintelligible screaming). Over time, though, as new characters came along and expectations for characters, especially in cartoons, began to rise, Donald sort of fell by the wayside...to the point that, like Mickey, I forgot he was even an adventurer. (Mickey, I would argue, is even more in need of a reboot than Donald, but that's a whole 'nother wall of text.) This Donald has had the same basic thing happen to him as happened to Mickey: He settled down. The major difference is, it gave his character depth and complexity, rather than simply making him stagnant. He deals with genuine, real-world fears -- the need to support his nephews, the danger of their living situation and his former profession -- and he overcompensates. There's several possibilities for WHY he gave up the adventuring life, none of them happy. As usual, his sister Della is nowhere to be seen. But this time, it's a plot point. Furthermore, there's something Donald and Scrooge argue about called "The Spear Of Selene"...who, for those unaware, was one the Greek goddesses who represented the moon. (Her myth was part of the inspiration for Sailor Moon's backstory.) Factor in the fact that this Donald is much more concerned with his family -- specifically, Della's sons, his nephews -- and we have a distinct possibility that the Spear and Della's disappearance are connected somehow. All well and good, but how does this affect Donald himself? Well, for a duck who loves his family as much as he does -- in direct contrast to Scrooge's "Family is nothing but trouble!" attitude in the pilot -- something terrible must have happened for him to part ways with Scrooge and not speak with him for ten years, until circumstances more or less force him to. Donald is kinder here, and smarter -- he *snarks*. Tony Anselmo has been doing Donald's voice for years, and now he can inject subtleties, inflections, and nuances into it where there were none before. Once you get past the trademark garble, you hear some wonderfully dry, witty dialogue from a duck known for being inarticulate as all hell. Some of the best lines in the pilot come from him! We hear more than just happy or angry squawks: Ducktales '17 has a Donald who can be sarcastic, bitter, protective, defensive, terrified, rueful, sympathetic...but most of all, *adult*. With an adult sense of humor, and an adult sensibility of looking at the world. Gone is the naive manchild (duckchild) of his olden days, or even his Kingdom Hearts incarnation. The Donald Duck we see in Ducktales '17 is a complex and nuanced character, just like the rest of the cast, and in so doing breaks new ground for an old, old Disney staple. I can't wait to see what happens with him tomorrow. :)

I grew up watching the original DuckTales and reading the Carl Barks Comics. I hated the fact that Donald was reduced to rare appearances, because even as a kid I knew he served in WWII, and in 1984, for Donald's 50th birthday the US Army actually gave him an honorable discharge, so even then it made no sense for him to be in the Navy on the grounds of he already served his country with distinction. He is bitter because of loosing his sister, he is smarter and calmer because in a way he is a parent now (sisnce boys were babies as we see on pictures) and mostly bursts temper tantrums only when situation actually demands it (like while protecting his family and fighting for it) and needed to be responsible. Donald Duck has always been my favorite among the 'Mickey Gang,' and I agree this new Ducktales is doing a great job with his character so far. Also regarding his small role in the original Ducktales, I heard it also had to do with the series being among the first Disney animated TV shows. Back in the mid-80s, Roy E. Disney wasn't confident with TV animation succeeding, and initially considered it a waste of time. He also figured that if the show tanked, especially with one of Disney's most iconic characters as a lead, then it would likely leave a huge detriment on both the company and Donald. Thankfully, the show became a success, to the point where Disney could make shows starring Mickey's gang like "Goof Troop," "Quack Pack," and "House of Mouse." Granted I kind of would've liked to see Donald more in the original Ducktales, but then again we probably wouldn't have gotten characters like Launchpad and Gizmoduck (both of which are my favorites from the original), or possibly even Darkwing Duck if that were the case. As for his suit, I would have to go with the blue one, since I've been more used to his animated appearances. But still, the black suit is a nice change of pace.

I think I can understand why Donald is “a little bit more anxious, a lot more responsible, and surprisingly bitter”. For one, we know practically nothing about the boys’ parents, except they don’t have them. Children can be a real deal to handle (not a parent, but have had enough experience with Daycare kids). Donald’s been raising a trio of rowdy, mischievous boys all by himself, all the while he’s trying to keep a stable life to do that by, that being raise the trio Ducks. That would explain his anxiousness. Donald’s maturity would also come into this, as he’s had to be a parent, not an uncle, to these boys. Come children come sacrifice, and he had to sacrifice a lot from what we can so far tell by his backstory here in Ducktales, as he had to be the parent for the boys, keeping them safe and giving them discipline, be there as best he could for (as I get from the pilot episode’s ending) his sister’s children. I would think also, his maturity was a result of his growing up as one of Scrooge’s sidekicks/adventuring teammates. A person going through a lot of experiences like highly dangerous adventures has to grow up a lot to adjust to the emotional, physical, and mental strain those experiences can bring. And the bitterness? I can believe it’s a cause of Scrooge. Donald seemed pretty upset over this “Spear of Selene”, blaming Scrooge (as it gets inferred by me when Scrooge says “the Spear of Selene wasn’t my fault” ((I think that’s what he said? I’ll take a look again but not editing this))) for it. Donald’s sister, Della, in another episode I remembered it was her who took it. Maybe Donald felt that when Scrooge just ... felt betrayed, he felt betrayed, too, because maybe Donald had thought Scrooge would look for Della but no? We don’t know anything about Della Duck save for she was also an adventurer/sidekick to Scrooge, and Donald’s sister. Donald would have grown up with her and been close with her. He must’ve felt his sister had a very good reason for what she did, but even more so that she wouldn’t give up her children without a just cause, as he seemed to hold no ill-will towards her. And the last resort Donald felt was in going to Scrooge for McDuck to watch the boys? That showed a lot of resentment, Donald thinking of family last as we know Donald is family-oriented, looking out for his sons (totally how I feel he feels about them, that they aren’t just his nephews, and I’m seriously hoping for the Ducktales reboot to give us Dad Donald moments) and being caring with them even when they drive him up a wall and back, and up that wall once again! But back on track, the bitterness. I feel Donald had to grow to be bitter, resenting how Scrooge wouldn’t go after Della, leaving the boys motherless, and Donald without his sister. My reasons for Donald’s character’s reboot.

SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 2 I'm guessing that Donald's sister died during an adventure, and this made him realize how dangerous the world could be, so he became careful and overprotective. He most likely blames Scrooge for the accident and therefore did not trust him, maybe it was Scrooges greed that caused it (like, he spent less on safety and this had consequences) But this may not be correct, because he seems to forgive Scrooge pretty fast and I don't know if a characters death is something Disney wanna make a huge plotline about.

I cried at that part) Etc... There's a lot of Disney movies AND series that glosses over or expands on a parental death. I honestly love these videos. So much love and dedication goes into them, you definitely deserve more subscribers. Donald was always my favorite, even if I said Minnie whenever someone asked. He's just so authentic compared to other cartoon characters. Things don't always go to plan, he gets angry, he gets jealous of other people's success, he tries and tries and it just doesn't happen. He gets honestly excited, loves his friends and family even though he can't always show it. Somehow he managed to stay relevant throughout the years, something even Mickey failed to do, and the comics merely helped him grow more. This video shows everything I love about this new version of him: he's overprotective, yes, but he's also resourceful, and responsible, he honestly loves his nephews as if they were his own children, and what's more important, he wants to grow. He knows he can't keep being the Donald he's been for the past ten years, and that excites me, because it means we'll have even more character development, and I can't wait to see it. Will you make a video about Scrooge? I think he's changed a whole lot in this version of DuckTales, even though he was, like Donald, very flexible to begin with. Here, he's used to both adventure *and* family, and it's clear whatever happened with Della hurt him greatly. I'm also intrigued by this new focus of his, being driven by adventure instead of money or treasure, and if it will last or if we'll eventually get back to his greedy self later on when he feels more secure around his family. Idk, I think Scrooge in general is such a dynamic character that many interpretations could happen and he'd still be himself. Whoops, sorry for the long comment, great video and keep up the great work!!

The comic book version of Donald has always been "my" version of Donald, and I'm absolutely thrilled that he's getting a real animated presence for essentially the first time in the new DuckTales. About the only thing Disney could do to make me happier is to adapt the classic Mickey Mouse comics (the 1930s/40s newspaper strips by Floyd Gotfredson) with roving adventurer Mickey as a cartoon. As a child of the comics, I'm similarly a fan of both Scrooge's traditional red clothes and Donald's black ones. I can live with Donald in blue, but I never liked Scrooge's blue outfit from the original DuckTales.

I actually always had mixed feelings about Donald's comics. On the one hand, I loved the adventure, depth, extended family, and the domestic complexity it added to Donald's character, but...then there were the OTHER types of comics that I absolutely hated because those were the ones that portrayed Donald as nothing but useless and his own family that did nothing but criticize, insult, berate, and even downright ABUSE him! Scrooge learned nothing how his greed forced his sisters (including Donald's mother!) to abandon him, and in some comics even though Donald and the nephews help Scrooge find countless wealth, Donald never gets to keep HIS fair share! He's in s constant state of debt and sometimes downright POVERTY while his uncle swims in his cubit acres of money. Donald's animated portrayal, his ORIGINAL portrayal, might not have been perfect, but he was a fighter! And I HATE how in some comics, they tried to take the fight out of the duck.

I don' know, he did so when he had to. And he stressed "Can you do that without losing them", which could mean that Donald thinks Scrooge did lose Della. And he also says "No tricks, no lies, no trouble" which is less specific but also indicated something fairly specific. Also what is the spear of Selene? Selene is the godess of the moon and in an old comic Della was an astronaut. Perhaps Scrooge sent her to the moon to get the Spear of Selene, or perhaps the Spear of Selene is a rocket.
@diersteinjulien6773
@diersteinjulien6773 6 лет назад
I actually have a whole crazy theory about Della (caution, spoiler alert about episodes 3 and 4)The 4th episode (the great dime chase) told us that she took the Spear of Selene, and that she was sorry for it. Now, where can she take it, whatever it was, without being found by the two greatest adventurers of all times (Scrooge and Donald), considering one of them is also the richest duck on the planet and can afford millions on ivestigation or a search and rescue mission (he DOES spend millions on magic devices for protection, after all). The answer could be that she went to space, but it's not what I'll consider here: I'll suppose she went throught time (Scrooge has a time machine, as shown as a gag in the promos). But if she went throught time, where is she now? well she's right there: she's Mrs Beakley! Beakley declared in episode 3 that she was a spy, she cares for Scrooge and the boys (she is the one who pushes them to get closer, but them living in-house is too close for her), she knows Donald and messes with him (as shown by her 'House rules' targeting him specificaly, and the only photographic evidence we have of Della is... her messing with Donald). It would also explain why there are no traces left of Della: Beakley is in a prime spot to wipe them off (people think Scrooge is responsible, but there are no evidence of that actually). The only accomplice she has is Quackfaster, that helped her write her out of the archives but did guide Dewey (despites her crazy antics) to the secret archive room. And there are no proof that the secret archive is Scrooge's, it could be Della's (it allows entrance to member of the Duck family), it also explain why Quackfaster knows Webby, it's throught Beakley. It also means that the title of the only book related to Della in the archives, other than being an obvious reference to another work, is a clue to where Della is ('the life and TIMES of Della Duck'). Now that I supposed that Della is Mrs Beakley, what about the spear of Selene? She should probably still keep it close to her, right? Well Beakley has something that she keeps close to her at all time: it's Webby. Webby's parents are never mentionned, not even on her corkboard diagram, as far as we know her 'granny' is the only family she has. So my guess is that the Spear of Selene is an empathic or wish-granting artefact, probably prone to destruction (hence the weaponized name), and Della took it away because it was going to kill/destroy something. But it stayed a wish-granting thing and by keeping it with her, it granted Della what she was missing now that she's estranged in time: a family. Webby is a 4th triplet because she actually has the same 'mother', whose sense of adventure she inherited, and with love for her family (hence her obsession with th Duck family). Conclusion: Della is Mrs Beakley and Webby is the Spear of Selene. Now Disney, you have two seasons to convince me otherwise XD

Don't matter what color sailor suit he wears (blue or black), He will always be the Donald Duck we all came to know and love 😁😁🦆

My thoughts about the estrangement between Donald and Scrooge. Spoilers for those who haven't seen the new Duck Tales yet... if you haven't then go watch it. It's on RU-vid. At the end of the show, when the boys and Scrooge are in the garage sorting through and moving everything that's inside of it, Dewey finds a portrait of Scrooge and Donald on a pirate ship. When he pushed up the folded over portion he sees an image of another duck that Dewy recognizes as his mother. Clearly Dewey's mother went on adventures with Scrooge and Donald. My hypothesis is that on one of these adventures, something bad happened that led to the death of Donald Duck's sister. Donald blames Scrooge for her death. This is the wedge that drove them apart. This also explains why Donald is overprotective of Huey, Dewey and Louie. He lost a family member, he doesn't want to lose another.

Two years later at the start of season three. Not only have they managed to get out of the shadow of the original, they have produced my favorite version of Donald Duck EVER!

Quick clarification: the reason why Donald is easier to understand in some other media than here is because they usually check with his voice actor (Tony Anselmo) first who goes over the script and will change lines for Donald to make him easier to understand. But in this case they didn't do that and supposedly according to Tony Anselmo himself, them even sped up his voice in Season 1! 😤

I just realized the line, "Can you do that without losing them?" may have been in reference to how Donald might have blamed Scrooge for the loss of Della Duck

Where is Don Rosa's part of this Character ? I mean, he's closer to Don Rosa's Donald (making ironic jokes, being smart but still a bit goofy) than Carl Barks' Donald :/ He's a Duck, but a very Human Duck, more than Scrooge

Antoine Yeah, Don Rosa is my favourite. I live in Finland and I have a whole bookcase full of Donald Duck comics.

Don Rosa's stories and adventures were the best and the funniest. I truly hope they take clues from those in this show.

Ugh. I hope not. I like Barks' portrayal of Donald better than Rosa's who usually gave most of the heroics to Scrooge (Rosa's fave character) and used Donald more as comic relief which is unfair because DONALD (not Scrooge) was the original adventurer and brawler..Donald is my favorite character and was also Barks' favorite character and I love seeing Donald in the more heroic role!

And yet ironically enough that's the same voice actor who provided his voice since 1986
