I kinda love how the Ecclesiarch got around the whole "you're not supposed to have a standing army" by saying "Wait wait! Technically it says no MEN under arms... So bolter bitches (affectionate) are fine!" They are one of the more interesting factions in warhammer, having more parallels with chaos in their concepts than even the space marines. Which makes sense with the emperor being this massively powerful warp presence now.

It also sort of explains the sisters boob plates in the armor, personally my fellings On the retcon is. “I am not going to buy female Custodes, but i was not buying male Custodes either, you Don’t wan’t them in your army, Don’t buy them. But i have Games Workshop shares in my retirement savings, so i whenever GW puls a D-bag move on the players i take it as a plus for my savings in the long run, must admit i have been a long slog since they announced Warhammer+ til now. But Warhammer+ and GW chasing of “Text to speech” was a worse hit to the stock than this is.

because there's not a lot to the sisters of silence and their hyper-specialized core concept kind of makes it difficult to meaningfully expand on them. Not every faction in 40k even includes psychers, and few include more than one or two, do you really need multiple different units of anti-psyker specialists? Female custodes being a thing isn't mutually exclusive with expanding sos. they didn't do this change /instead/ of expanding sos.

They are basically the female equivalent of custodies too so the stupid DIE score should be fulfilled anyway and fans would’ve been actually happy

I wouldn't call it the Emperor being inclusive. Remember Custodes aren't mass produced. It's all based on individual merit and If someone is found that could make a good custodes, then they'll do it. There's no Geneseed or implants. Custodes are just baseline humans genetically altered to be the best of humanity. They're Human+ so gender doesn't factor in really.

I see it differently. The Custodes represent what the Emperor wanted all of humanity to become (or at least a prototype of it), and half of humanity is female; so female custodians make sense considering what they represent. This change also further distances the custodes from the astartes, which i think helps since i have seen way too many people who think that Custodes are fancy golden space marines (they are not. They represent different things, have different purposes, and are made in different ways. The only thing in common is that they are huge people in bulky power armor.). The SoS were introduced with the out-of-universe reason of balancing out the sausagefest that the (at the time) all male custodes were, like the SoB did for the Space Marines. In-universe the SoS help the custodes against psychic or daemonic threats as the custodes are not psykers nor blanks; but they are not custodes themselves, they are not part of the whole "prototype of the future humans" thing. Now that the custodes have been changed to also include female members (a very small change to the lore, as the writers were pushing for this for a long time so they kept the entire process of creation of a custodes purposefully gender-neutral) it's the SoS that need an overhaul, now that they no longer need to fill the "female representation in the emperor's talons" role alongside the "anti-psyker unit" role. The way i would like to see this done is by getting more lore for the non-custodes talons of the emperor, and add to this cathegory an all-male fighting force to restore balance: From male custodes + female SoS To Male force + female SoS + neutral Custodes Which is even better than before imo. My proposal for this new force would be an elite division of the Lucifer Blacks (mortal guards of the imperial palace) in power armor similar to that of the SoS. If they are not genetically modified, then males having better physical attributes due to genetics is a great excuse to make them all male. Add to this a reasonable lore reason for the SoS to be all female (my proposal is to make the pariah gene that makes them blanks tied to the X chromosome, meaning that it would be more common/potent in women since they have 2. So women with weaker pariah genes on the level of what men can have and male pariahs are sent to become culexus assassins, while women with the strong variant of the pariah genes become SoS), and you are golden (heh).

The issue is that this lore wasn't put front and center to justify it. GW could have easily pointed to custodians being the emperor's vision of the "future human" whereas the space marines were little more than his new and improved thunder warriors.

It the power of the name and what it represents, that why we are not seeing the Sister of Battle and Silence get a new specialized unit that upgrade to be a superhuman version of their regular units that similar but not necessarily the same as space marine. They would rather be given the more important iconic thing that they can stamp their face on then try to used something that exist or build up to anything similar but don't have the same recognition.

Usually they were thrown into the sea to drown after being born, but Hephaestus spared them and convinced the Amazons to let them live on Themiscyra, and they were essentially treated like slaves who were only valuable for making weapons and armor for the women.

People behave differently in mixed company than they do around people they have more in common with and if like you said the base frame that you're enhancing isn't important then there would be no particular benefit to using both genders while potentially some advantage in the sense of fraternity/sorority gained in terms of unit cohesion (which is heavily implied given how much they are referred to as "brothers" or "sisters"). And that's assuming we take your assertion that the upgrades make the original human body irrelevant, which is a baseless assertion, you can put the same turbo charged upgrades on both a sedan and a minivan, the sedan is gonna go faster. Thematically, we're also playing with fantasy archetypes. The masculine fighter and the feminine mystic are a classic dynamic. I'm not saying "they have to be X or Y gender because the science" since it's a bunch of space magic and lost technology. I'm saying it was an interesting thematic quirk that is lost by pretending like there were always girls in the very homo-erotic jock club that is the golden banana boys. And that the whole push to do so really feels like someone decided the Custodes are the best and therefore women need to be part of that group in order to be considered equal. And it betrays an underlying assumption that hyper-masculinity is the metric by which we decide who is the best.

The laziness is really the problem in most of those cases of things being woke. If you want a bunch of different people of different colors in non-US settings make something in the lore about why they are there, you don't get multicultural societies just by magic, there is politic and history behind that. If there is a Mary Sue, give explanations why she became like that, give her the hero journey. If you retcon something make it make sense and expand the lore, not just suddenly switch it, having to give explanation to something weird in the lore is an opportunity to create something interesting.

Had they put in one (or both) of those two scratched out primarchs as a woman and with female space marines and a good chunk of lore, after the initial grumbling. Because well the tism is strong in WH40K any change will lead to some grumbling, the fans would accepted it. Here GamesWorkshop let me do your job and give you a birds eye of the new lore: Emperor created the female Primarch(s), but got a vision of the primarchs ruling mankind as evil and cruel dictators rather than being the protectors of mankind. This was cause because primarchs loved their own kids more than the emperor and mankind. So the quickest solution was to yeet the female Primarch(s) into deep space, as he could not bring himself to destroy her/them (him not yet having cast the part of him with empathy and love into the warp to fight Horus). Now in the grimdark future where there is only war a rogue trader taking a wrong turn in the warp end up on the planet the female primarch lives... See it's not fucking hard, have one of your writers write a novel about it and boom, done.

I mean, it's also how the lore has been built over the entirety of 40k's existence. Remember when Iron Warriors were an offshoot of the Thousand Sons? No, of course not, they're one of the original space marine legions, and "it's always been that way."

No, the existence of the sisters of silence means there's no female custodes. Because then there is absolutely no purpose for their existence. And the main reason there can't be female custodes or astartes is the emperor wants humanity to rule the galaxy. Thunder warriors, Custodes and Astartes are not human. So they were made all male, so they could not breed and wipe out humanity. Humanity cannot compete with immortal, 8 foot tall killing machines that never need to sleep or eat. The imperium kills anyone with an extra punky finger, you think they'd be cool with an objectively superior, non human species holding positions of authority over humanity? You might as well let the Eldar run the imperium at that point.

Why? 40k retcons are constant. Dark Eldar exist because of retcons. Leagues of votann exist because of retcons. Tyranids. Tau. Necrons. The current 40k timeline is a huge retcon from the Eye of Terror campaign timeline. 40k lore is like 90% retcons, why are they suddenly a step to far now? Are you just new to the game? If so, maybe settle in before getting all worked up.

They're a pretty interesting group of female warriors who are blanks, thus they make other people very uncomfortable and are extremely effective against psykers & as a result make for excellent allies to the custodes. They also are the ones who usually transport the souls to Terra who will be sacrificed to Big E. Despite this, the Sisters of Silence barely ever get ANY attention from GW, and they've been around for awhile. It's hard to believe that GW is doing this out of genuine care cause if they actually did give a f*ck then they'd add more lore to the actual female warriors. Another thing is this, whilst there has never been anything suggesting that females can't be custodes, it's a pointless statement to make anyway. Custodes weren't originally picked from the cream of the crop like Space Marines sure, so they could have chosen some women, but the process of becoming a custodes would make them indistinguishable from the other male custodes anyways. Their bodies were all manipulated to be the perfect defenders of the Imperial palace, and as such they are going to have purely masculine/male physiques. Even facial structure would be very masculine. Maybe the eyes & voice could still be feminine, but that'd mostly be it. All this considered. It's hard to believe there is any actual genuine good intentions behind this, since if they actually gave a shit they'd make an effort to give better context into how females are integrated, or give more lore to the ALREADY EXISTING female warriors that have been neglected for so long.

@malmasterson3890 it sounds to me like they had different attributes and were awesome in their own way, and this whole controversy is about someone scrunching their face up and saying women can do anything a man can do, without even knowing about these female units that have their own utility... changing something people love to make a statement is the nefarious part, and honestly it's not that big a deal, but it's just another straw on the camel's back, so at this point people are going to be mad cuz they are sick of it, and we all know this is a sign of what's to come, something else will probly be changed for the same reason if this doesn't cause enough backlash from the fans.

Its because Blackrock have cottoned onto the fact that white upper middle class people's investing habits have changed and they are more likely to part with their money if an investment or product has the words 'ethical' on them, this is because it allows them to sooth their self images by convincing themselves they are good people in spite of hoarding their inherited wealth their ancestors accrued through exploitation on a global scale. They think as long as they engage in 'ethical consumerism' they can still be 'good' and not have to give the money back. So Blackrock hire consulting firms to turn their assets into 'ethical investments' to sell to their over privileged customers.

There's actually only a handful of investment firms with enough money to invest in so many different companies, so it's not surprising for the same names to keep popping up. Remember not only do they give more money for esg (environmental social governance) compliance but they have more money to spend than most countries have to spend when working out their yearly budgets.

Another thing, female Custodes is just one of dozens of retcons to the lore in this games 30 years of life ie: Necrons being more than just soulless terminators, the Primarchs having a mother (Erda), Horus maybe not actually being fully dead, Primaris marines. The lore of Warhammer 40k isn't etched in stone to never change, it's vague on purpose to allow for future changes. Heck they killed off a faction years ago and just revived them a bit over a year ago with a new name and complete lore change, The Leagues of Votann which were previously called the Squats.

It does effect the setting it fundamentally broken Custodian sub-faction completely. They are unsavlagebly ruined. And unlike you we have Pattern Recognition. It always starts the same.
