Divide & Conquer: How to solve maybe the hardest puzzle level in SMM1

In this puzzle level from Super Mario Maker 1, the player needs to develop and execute a comparison-based sorting algorithm that is efficient enough to sort 30 randomly shuffled POWs in 500 seconds:
Course ID: CFD1-0000-03D0-3983
Course title: Divide & Conquer!

Sadly, there's no way to make such combinatorial puzzles anymore in SMM2, because the mechanic has been "fixed".
Sorry for all the Super-Expert no-skip runs that this level has ended!

This is one of the last 3 uncleared SMB3 levels. Team 0% is struggling with this one, even with the clear video

Woah, this is super cool. I'm in my last year of comp sci at uni and we did divide and conquer algorithms earlier this term, did not expect to see it in Mario Maker of all places :D

Sure, no problem! If you like, I can also give you some additional information about the level that might be interesting and that wasn't mentioned in TheRileyC's video about the level. But if you just want to do a short mention without too much detail that's fine too of course.

Fair enough! You know, this actually happened to Aurateur on Twitch once with an earlier version of this sorting challenge. His community even managed to contact me spontaneously, but unfortunately I wasn't able to help him on the fly. This clear video didn't exist back then either. On the other hand, making a practically impossible level is even easier in SMM2 in my opinion, since players cannot open other people's level in the editor anymore. So I would have preferred it if Nintendo had not taken my toys away from me...
