Was hoping you'd discuss dividing them.

thank you. I was specifically trying to find out about mums as after the display period in a pot, some are so pot bound...didn't know if I cut cut them or fiddle them apart. I ended up just cutting them into generous chunks & re-potting. they will overwinter in an unheated z5 greenhouse.

Should be retitled Planting Fall Mums (not "Dividing and")

Hello Sue, we have a potted fall mum that we want to keep over the winter and get cuttings to propagate so we can have more of them. We live in the NE and soon it will be getting cold with snow so I have the following questions . . . . 1) What do we need to do to save and protect the plant? Should we cut it back, put it in the garage so it won't be in the snow or harshest cold and do we need to continue watering it? Is it best to bring it into the house or cellar? 2) When should we take our cutting and root them for best results? 3) Can we put it under a grow light in late winter to get a jump on growth for our cuttings? Thank you for any guidance you can provide, Jack :-)

+Jack Hi Jack, we're attaching a fact sheet Iowa State that does a great job of explaining propagation of mums. As far as grow light, the mums should develop on their own unless you plan to leave them in a dark, enclosed place. We hope this and the fact sheet answer your questions. www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/hortnews/1997/3-14-1997/mumprop.html

+Jack I have one more issue that I hope you can help with. I went out to take care of my mums and found that a tricker treater had stepped on it. The step broke off several branches but I think the plant will recover next year. I hate to just toss out the branches as they are quite full and around 8-9 in long. Is there any way I can salvage them? What are the chances I can root them if I bring them inside? Thanks for any help you can give, Jack :-)
