We made this modern side table using just 2x4s - less than $9 in wood - as part of the Modern Maker #two2x4challenge. This was a little labor of love - but we do love it! 👇 materials & links below! 👇

MUSIC
Electro Brass by Joakim Karud
More thoughts on the project: While this side table was one of our more difficult projects because of the "fancy" joinery techniques we used (angled dados) and the cheaper, more difficult to work with materials, the fact that the 2x4s were cheaper is actually what allowed us to freely experiment with the angled dados in the first place. It does seem ironic that the cheaper your material gets, the more tools (which can cost a lot) you seem to need to get it into shape.
But we did learn other valuable lessons experimenting with this 2x4 side table other than just how to do angled dados! We also dealt with snipe from our planer for the first time, and I'm so glad we learned on cheap wood rather than something expensive. In addition, this was our first furniture piece held together only by glue (no screws!). Lastly, it was our first time doing the finishing combination recommended by David Picciuto of coats of shellac followed by a buffing of wax. It was really easy, really forgiving, and we love how the finish turned out.

When one considers what early woodworkers made with their limited tools, it is laughable that we have such problems with all these modern conveniences! I am continually amazed at what THEY did, AND what y'all make! I love the table! Some of those other designs were really cool, too! I'm glad you used 4 legs instead of two, no matter what happened to encourage that change in the design! You two are so great!

So, a weird little detail that made me so happy- that's Wilbur Smith's The Seventh Scroll in the living room shot. I LOVE that series! The first is River God and it's my favorite (Seventh Scroll is second, and it was originally only a trilogy, but became a whole series). I just love that you have it and that I instantly recognized it.

That looks a whole lot like the table I made in the woods, except taller. Since my fort is set lower than a normal house because I generally sit cross-legged either on the ground or on one of the low chairs I made, I also made the little table a lot lower than yours. If you don't count the cost of tools, then the only cost to my little table was labor. Since the point of doing this bush crafting was because it is relaxing, the labor paid out more than it cost in energy. Now, as far as tools go, I did use a Corona folding saw, a Scotch eye auger, an axe (because I used a log I tried to split twice so that it was a relatively good board for the tabletop), wood glue, and a small set of carving knives (although you could get by with just a single whittling knife or even a well-sharpened buck knife). Those tools were pricey together but I've made loads of stuff in the wild with them so it's definitely not something that you use up for a project. When it comes to the natural materials, I used part of a big branch I cut out of a tree that was crowding another tree and that had died at the top of the branch already. I only cut wood that will improve the health of the forest, reduce the risk of wildfire, or do both. This way, I can have fun in nature and make sure to preserve it for more people to have fun in.

This video made my day ) Great project! Want to build this.
@EvanAndKatelyn
@EvanAndKatelyn 7 лет назад
Yayyy!! That makes our day!! You totally should. And if you don't have as many tools I've been thinking about a limited tool version of this. I think you could do something similar with only a circular saw, straight edge, sandpaper, and glue (maybe a chisel too). The legs and shelf would have to be at 90 degrees but I think it would still look really cool. The circular saw can be used to cut everything to length, then rip the edges, then cut the dados. With the right blade (flat cutting edge) and a straight edge to guide the cuts the dados should be good enough but a chisel would help. Sanding could take the place of a planer if you have enough patience, or you could leave the surface a little more rough. Also, we hope to do a limited tool build soon...ish lol. Have a few already in the queue but it's coming soon

I like using 2x4s because they fit into my sedan car (with that little hole in the back seat opened up from the trunk), so I don't need a big car/truck to transport wood, and people throw them out like junk, so you can often find total wood projects being done from 2x4s that you have picked up.

You guys have great production value and although I'm sure there are a million things we don't see as viewers and just speaking from my own experience as a one man team, you guys have great chemistry and it shows in both the final product and video and even more inherently in how you capture things and collaborate. Nice table guys and your video work is great. I like your style and snappy presentation and also the way you slow down for tricky bits and for want of a better word, "abbreviate" the boring bits. Keep them coming please? Bob :)

You have What If! You have Young House Love book! Your supurrvisor is adorable and I love him/her(?)! You do glossy/holo tacos! Aaaaaaahhh! Also your editing is ooonnnn point, especially later videos (I'm binging at the moment because what more practical approach could there be to DIY videos...), music choices, cuts between shots, etc etc. Also as a haver of rubbish hearing (not helped by eating doritos noisily while watching youtube) I love that all your videos have (good!) subtitles! In conclusion hello your videos are excellent and I have subscribed. Also as everyone else says you guys are a ridiculously cute pair. Riiiii-dic. Cute. Dying.

2x4s are fun to work with, I had a project in my 3D design class where we had to take an 8ft long 2x4 and make it into a sculpture with as little unused material as possible, I ended up ripping mine into 3 long pieces on the 4 inch side (so they were 2x1.3x8ft) and then did a bunch of geometry to make angled cuts and different length pieces to make 3 spirals that intersected eachother and even had a base, I spent so long on the math I nearly ran out of time to actually make it lol but if I hadn’t it probably wouldn’t have worked out

Thanks 😁 and no way, you can do it!! We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into and it was our first try at something like this too. We just practiced on a scrap piece of wood and then went for it, lol. Learned a lot and it is suuuuper study!!

Ah true, we were pretty limited when we were at our old apartment. Then our workshop has slowly taken over to the whole garage and we don't park in there much anymore lol :P It is a bit addictive. I feel like we're leveling up (like in a video game) when we learn new things!

For you panels that you were getting the snipe on.... You might know this by now and I put it in here for future folks who read it. Make your cuts longer than you need. A few inches. Then after final milling you can take off the end that has the snipe on it. Saves a bit of time, but wastes a little material. In this case....cheap 2x4s.

Yes, with foodsafe oil or a combination of a mixture with beeswax

+Jolien Brebels ah cool! Our niece is a year and a half old and we'd love to make some toys for her. We have a butcher block oil thats mineral oil, lemon oil, and beeswax (and it's foodsafe) think that would work?

It’s woodworking not cuteworking. Reasons like this is why I work by myself. In a side note I do like the sidetable. Seems like it’d be a convenient/sturdy table for many years.
