How to align your car yourself with just basic garage items. In this video I first show you how to align your car using the string alignment method. Then I show a more advanced way using toe plates and tape measures to do an easy at home alignment. These methods will work on a car, truck, van basically anything with two that you can adjust using the tie rod ends.

I have been using the string methods for years. Took my truck in after doing it to have it checked for accuracy. Shop said assignment was perfect.

Well, "perfect" doesn't really tell us anything. There's a wide range that OEM's will consider "aligned" and most shops just try to keep the value green. What would be more interesting would be to know what your measured toe, camber, and caster angles where at home compared to what the machine showed.

If this ain’t the fucking truth. Shops out here doing us dirty. My parents brought their truck in to get an alignment and paid full price for a 4 wheel. Come to find out there is a solid axle they can only do the front but the shop still charged for 4 and showed readings as if they were able to adjust things lol. Fucking crooks

Hi Blake: Thank's for your "simple" DIY Wheel alignment! I was watching your Vid and I thought you were going to forget "Centering" your Steering Wheel, but then @7:05 mins into your Vid you mentioned and showed the viewers that you positioned your steering wheel (Centered it)..lol..;-) The reason I am mentioning this is because my Steering Wheel is "Clocked" to about the 2:00 o'clock position and that occurred after a Shop installed new Tie-rods on my Car!! That same Shop also does Alignments, but I couldn't get that done that day they changed my Tie-rods, so my Car is not "pulling left or right", but it is making quite a bit of tire noise (Humming) and when I am driving straight down the road and I turn my steering wheel as if to "center" my Steering wheel; the noise reduces, but of course now the Car is drifting from center towards the left!! So, I am going to attempt your simple "DIY" alignment!! I'll post an After-DIY alignment to let you folks know how I made out, doing this task on my 2000 BMW E39 540i"A"...:-) Cheers everyone!!

I just had an alignment done car pulling to the left. Steering wheel slightly cocked ,took it back I don’t think they did anything. Now I’m gonna order this tool and do it myself. Tired of getting ripped off with alignments.

One problem with your string method is that it's only accurate if the front and rear track width is the same. This unfortunately isn't the case on a lot of cars, including the BMW e30. (55.4" front, 55.7" rear). Rear toe settings also have an effect. To solve this you could use 4 jack stands. Takes longer to set up, though.

Yeah that method doesn't work with different track width cars. A better way would be to use 4 jackstands, and a separate string on each side, set a few inches away from each tire. Take the track width of each axle, take the difference, divide by 2, and measure the difference from the string to the center hub of each wheel, making sure to account for half the track width difference. So for my FWD Honda, the front track is 5mm wider, so I would set my string to be 2.5mm farther away from the rear hubs than the front hubs. Then I would double check the distance between each string in front of and behind the car. Theoretically the strings would be parallel at that point, assuming the car's frame is straight and square, and then you can measure the distance from the string to the wheel rim edge at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions.

No it will still work, you just have to twig the line( put a piece of material between the tire and the string, that would make it as wide as the staggered tires).

Incorrect I'm afraid. It's all relative, it just means there may be a bigger gap between front wheel and string but it's all relative, you can still measure the gaps the same way

I had no string but used a number plate instead against the wheel and drew lines on the floor... I only needed it near enough straight to take it to a lazer alignment place... Your video inspired me though 👍

If you tweaked your procedure a bit, you could do a 4 wheel alignment without those plates even if your front and rear track aren't equal. two jackstands and string, find the centerline of the car (measure between control arm mounting points). then two more sets of jackstands + string, one for each side of the car running the midline of the rim. you want all 3 strings to be parallel and equidistant from each other. tape measure front/back rim to outside strings. you can also center the steering. don't forget to make sure your tires have equal psi. a little soapy water under each tire works as well as turn plates to unbind any load on the tire. did this for years at the track. miss it a lot.

Hi just a quick question , if the boards are showing a misalignment how do you know which wheel is out ? It could be just one wheel out (allot) or both wheels out ,half each ,(of allot) if you get my drift??

Bmw e30 is tow in from factory in metric 1-1.5 mm is the right adjustment. Front Axel is wider than Rear Axel . The string is unless. After every adjustment you HAVE TO ROLL THE VEHICLE at least one feet to the front and back, for accurate measurements. Otherwise you have very helpful tools there those two boards and two tapes. I’d recommend googling an article on it I’m sure there’s a lot of information out there. But the general grasp of it is when the control arms and the steering components are not aligned the same when the steering rack has a greater angle then the suspension is when you’re going to run into issues.

Get the car aligned at a shop. Or take the steering wheel off and center it. Also adjust the tie rod so it’s parallel to the other if possible

This string method is to be done on the premise that the axle width front and rear is the exact same.

You can use your brain and compensate for that difference. Use Shims or stretch the string out away from the tires. Measure in from the string. That's how they put poles into the ground for a pole barn so all of them are lined up. If the plans want some of the poles staggered, just add or subtract the difference. Easy

Some people have mentioned that if using the boards if they are resting against the tire and not the rim you won't get an accurate reading. I think if this is true, it still will let you get the alignment close enough that you can at least drive it to a shop.

I think you can put red brick on the front and back of the tire with the edge of the brick on the outer side of the tire and you take mesurement with tape from front end to other front end of the brick and back end to the back end of the brick where the tire and see make it equal zero toe 👍 this is poor man aligment what iam doing when changing tie rods 😁

Great video! one thing to note for everyone if your tire bulges out past the wheel you wont get accurate measurements unless you take a measurement of how far away the toe plate is from the front and rear of the wheel surface and subtract that distance to your measurement of the toe

Assuming the same amount of bulge on both tires each side of the car (meaning similar corner weighting), measurements will still be accurate since you're only looking for the difference in measurements between the front and rear of the tire.

those plates resting on the tire is not very accurate NEED to be resting on the RIM to get a more accurate measurement !

True, however, take the measuring tape and measure from the board to the rim on both sides. If this distance is equal then the measurement is valid. If not, adjust for this difference.

I feel like the people who are “professionals” and are like, “Oh this isn’t accurate to the nth degree”. People with cars like these are not sheep. Half of the time they don’t care about tires wearing a little more on one side, or having their toe a little out. It’s honestly annoying. This is a FREE DIY method. Not like going to a fucking BMW dealer and paying $150 with the money you save from alignments you can afford new tires lmao.

At 7:32 is not level to the wheel, its FLUSH to the wheel ... At 7:06 you said the steering wheel is centered....?? You don't center a steering wheel, we make sure its straight ... Most people use 4 jack stands this way each set is independent of each other. But both ways work, its just preference right, as long as the job gets done thats all that matters ..
