DIY Battery powered electric reel mower (Greenworks 18" reel mower + 20v Max power)

This is a Greenworks 18" reel mower converted from manual to electric, and powered by a 20v lithium ion battery pack. Description, parts list and link to 3D models below.
There are plenty of electric reel mower conversions on RU-vid already, but I wanted to take advantage of the large number of 20v lithium ion battery packs already on hand. This mower is powered by the internals from a 20v drill and utilizes the drill's reduction gearbox to provide the needed torque and the slipper clutch to protect the drive train when the blade gets jammed by a twig or pine cone. The yard is relatively small so a standard capacity 20v pack is able to provide enough power to cut the lawn twice and power the leaf blower for cleanup after.

I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.

Incredible take my order. Nice clean and crisp set up love that you used the slipper clutch smart. Saw the mow videos as well I was surprised that such a small can motor was able to get through tall grass.

I really like the fact that is not over engineered, that what is spinning is the reel and not the wheels. Does it spin backwards for when it need to be sharpen? It would be great a full indepth tutorial for does of us that dont know any about engineering.

This is some amazing work. So other than the 3D printed components, all of the parts came off a 20v black and decker drill? Another more in depth video showing wiring etc. would be very much appreciated by us all. Great job!

Awesome! You mention it having enough power to cut the lawn twice. Are you still having to cut twice to get down to a minimum height? I currently push a 16-inch Scotts and it takes me two passes to get down low. I was considering a similar modification in hopes that this would eliminate the required second pass...

Getting two cuts out of a 2.0Ah B&D 20-Volt MAX Lithium-Ion pack was just testing done to see how long a pack would last. Everything grows fast here in the south during the summer months so I cut about every 3-5 days, and only make one pass each time to keep the clippings short since I usually don't bag. The grass catcher is attached in the other two videos because I was out of town and fell behind on cutting

Can you provide a link to the 14T bmx freewheel sprocket you used? All the 14T freewheel sprockets I've found have a 34mm ID, which is too big for the Staton 2409 adaptor.

My question is how did you get the sprocket over the bearing race? I just built a rc tank with a reel mower but my sprocket is screwed to the wheel. I really don’t like my setup

Sorry, but no plans to put together an in depth tutorial. There are several 3D printing companies online that should be able to create the parts for you.

Thanks! I use a 4 Ah battery when cutting the grass and have never had it run out yet, so unfortunately I couldn't tell you. However as a point of reference, it takes about half an hour to finish cutting the backyard, and trim the edges all with the same battery.

@@aphex4000 What's your square footage, what type of grass, and what is the cutting height? I see there are now cordless reel mowers on Amazon for $200...so that's another angle that can actually work out to be less expensive.

@@golfshoe9321 We have an odd shaped backyard because of a creek that run behind the property, but I would estimate just over 2,000 sq ft. I totally agree that the number of electric reel mower options on the market have grown considerably, and would be a better option for someone who doesn't already have all the spare parts for a project like this.

@@golfshoe9321 It was built for a beautiful lawn of cavalier zoysia (shown in the videos), but we have since moved to Georgia where the lawn is an unsightly mix of st. Augustine, bermuda, fescue and several miscellaneous weeds like chickweed, spurge and nutsedge. 🤦‍♂️

How did you get the bmx sprocket on the reel axle? I’ve got a rounded nut with a washer that I can’t remove to place the sprocket. Did you have this issue?

@@andrewdouthitt3693 No issues with a rounded nut. I just removed all the parts from the axle, then heated the Staton 2409 adapter and slid it on the axle for a friction fit. The BMX sprocket then screws onto the Staton 2409 adapter.

I could understand you not making DIY kit.Like you wished you inspired me putting a drill motor on my Greenworks reel lawnmower. Ordered from Staton required gear parts. Also bought on eBay a battery receiver for the Black and Decker drill I have which will be dismantled to acquire the motor the chuck end, the trigger and the reverse switch. The only thing I miss is your slt files for the motor-gear support and the trigger-reverse switch to print them on my 3d printer. If you agree I will copy your idea. In fact I tackled the 3d model on fusion 360. Next some file adjustments to precise dimensions for the mower I have, then 3d print prototypes on the creality Cr10s.
