Thanks for this Rusty! I am in the middle of my build heavily inspired by your build. My neighbor donated a Ryobi 40v Brushed unit, seems to be a great option. Being a 16" version though I don't get the fancy handle setup like you got. So a little design and 3d printing will be in order. Thanks again man this is a great build!

Hey rusty. Great build. I did my own and I must say it’s a great learning experience. One observation…your chain tensioner is on the wrong side. It should be after the motor not before it. Since the motor spins and turns the reel by pulling (not pushing) that side of the chain will be under tension by design, while the other side (closest to the front or after the motor) experiences some compression or slack. Especially under acceleration or start up. I made the same mistake with my build and upon startup my chain fell off a few times or after hitting a thick patch until I placed it after the motor and before the reel. Not trying to over explain to someone like you who obviously has the skills for the build but for a new enthusiast who may be getting started like I was several years back and it would have saved me an extra half hour of tinkering in the garage. Thanks for the inspiration.
@rustyscreations
@rustyscreations Год назад
Thanks for that information. I never even thought about which side the tensioner should be on. I do have the ability to pivot the motor on the bottom bolt to pull tension on the chain and tighten it up. Definitely looking at ways to flip that to the other side though. I appreciate that!

Thanks! Look for someone who buys tools by the pallet. That's who I got the mower from. Got a great deal on a basically new mower
@LlyleHunter
@LlyleHunter Год назад
This is precisely the kind of cordless electric domestic reel mower that the manufacturers should be producing. Instead they only produce greensmowers, large and costly domestic reel mowers and that dirt cheep thing that came out for $200.00 that the manufacturer calls a reel mower but consists of razor blades around a cylinder that need regular replacements as maintenance. I hope you’re planning on producing and marketing these. If you can augment a cartridge system similar to Allette mowers I think that a brush roll that switches out with the reel and dumps the clippings in a bag would be a great feature for suburbanites with driveways and sidewalks.
@rustyscreations
@rustyscreations Год назад
Exactly Bruce! I feel like there is still a huge gap between professional greens mower and smaller units sold for home owners, especially with battery powered equipment. All of your manual reel mowers (earthwise, scotts, fiskar, etc) are better quality reel than the one with razor blades, they just need a "power supply" to fit in that category.
@nateb3105
@nateb3105 Год назад
Done the same - IMO you may have issues with the chain tension. I use a 250W 9.5:1 reduction motor & the torque is INSANE. No tensioner is effective. If there's a big load & some bumps you'll quite possibly jump the small sprocket (done it a bunch). I pack out my motor mount with washers to give the correct tension & no chain tensioner is installed - never skipped a beat now. You could also change the sprockets to larger ones to help avoid this & spread the load over more teeth - if anyone is building the same

Wow, great build! Best and most professional diy electric reel conversion I've seen. Would buy a kit if you decide to make those. For those of us already heavily invested in the 18 volt line do you think we could use that platform or do you think it needs to be the 40 volt platform to power this properly?
@rustyscreations
@rustyscreations Год назад
Thanks a lot Jeff! So I've seen on RU-vid some using an actual drill to power a manual reel mower. If you were to do a similar build as I've done, I would try and find an 18v mower and pull that motor rather than using a drill motor. I would assume it could be done similarly but you may have to step up your mowing frequency so your not putting as much stress on a smaller motor with more grass clippings.

Did the fiskars sprocket mate right up to the ryobi motor? I pulled parts from a kobalt and the bore of the fiskars sprockets is too small. Don’t have a mill or drill press so considering all options
@rustyscreations
@rustyscreations Год назад
BC the fiskars sprocket does fit on the ryobi motor shaft. It's actually a hair bigger. Since you already have the parts from the kobalt, I would see if there is a machine/metal shop near by that can do that for you. Should be a quick fix if you can find someone with the right equipment

With using the front roller without modification, would it stay on the mower? Or was tapping with threads necessary
@rustyscreations

I did that just to make sure the roller didn’t have any play side to side. It will stay in place without tapping the ends. Just cut the inner bracket and will need to drill a bigger hole for it to fit

Have you had any issues with the abrupt stop when you cut power due to the inertia of the reel? I've almost completed a build using a lot of your ideas and it seems like it may cause an issue after awhile. My small sprocket looks a little worn from my few tests and I'm wondering if it's from that or if it was like that and I didn't notice.
@rustyscreations
@rustyscreations 2 месяца назад
I haven't seen any issues, but that is definitely something I have been keeping an eye on. Most of the issues I've seen with others reaching out about the sprockets showing wear is from either a loose chain or the plane of each sprocket is a little off to where the chain doesn't track straight. I have thought about trying to find a "freewheel" adapter for the sprocket so that when the motor stops, it's not such an abrupt stop

Hello Rusty, watching your video again and I want to confirm this with you. Looking at the gut it seems like you didn't reuse the electronics board from Ryobi, correct? The little silver color box on your video is a voltage regulator?
@rustyscreations
@rustyscreations Год назад
Hey Andy, at 2:17 in the video there is a clip of everything I pulled out of the Ryobi mower. I left everything as is. The only change was flipping a set of wires on the motor to change direction. That was the idea, can everything be pulled out as one unit and repurposed. The silver box is the controller for the motor.

I have everything lined up and ready to go. It won’t fire up now any ideas?
@rustyscreations
@rustyscreations Месяц назад
Assuming it did run before set up, it's only a few things it could be. Depending on the model you pulled from, there's usually a safety switch in the handle bar that can be bypassed if need be. It could be one of the start buttons that I've seen replaced with a toggle switch on youtube. With my model, the part that gave problems was the magnet for the grass catcher which can be bypassed or even a piece of metal in it to close the circuit. Worst case scenario, it's the controller and not much you can do other than replace it.
@Dcabat
@Dcabat Месяц назад
Yeah it ran perfect when I took it out of the ryobi. I think it’s one of the original 40v ones it’s a black one. I’m assuming I missed a safety switch somewhere
@rustyscreations

@Dcabat check the one in the handle to make sure it's fully extended and the magnet. Is there a light on it? If so, does it come on?

@@rustyscreations yeah light comes on and it’s a self propelled one, when I have the self propelled motor connected it will spin that one as well.
@rustyscreations
