Do you have any diy using meadowfoam? I got a bundle with meadowfoam, sweet almond, coconut, jojoba, apricot kernel and grapeseed.. not sure where to begin and would I need to grab some castor as well? I have some fragrances from brambleberry like you had suggested.
Ive used almost all the oils on my beard. Sweet almond oil does wonders on my coarse beard. I mix two parts almond oil, one part jojoba, and one part argan. I recommend this recipe for anyone with a thick, coarse beard.
I just made my own oil for the first time ever: 60% argan oil 17% jojoba oil 10% fractionated coconut oil 10% pumpkin seed oil 3% peppermint oil Am I doing good?
I made my first bottle of beard oil last week I made a 60 ml bottle : Argan oil (10 ml) , Fractionated Coconut oil (10ml), Vitamin E oil (5 ml) , Jamaican Black Castor oil (10) , Sweet Almond oil (10 ml) Grape Seed oil (10ml) Avocado oil (10ml) and added like 20 drops of tangerine essential oil for fragrance ( +/ - ) a little on the measurements I would call it maybe a medium ish blend it seems to be pretty good so far I am going to mix your recipes too Dan when mine is gone
Great video, Dan. I was intimidated with the idea of making my own products as well but have enjoyed it immensely. Although wear unscented more than scented, I’ve really enjoyed playing with scent profiles as well. Getting closer to launching myself but am always encouraging friends and family to try making their own. Very cool to see you put this video out. Stay positive… 😉💪🏽😏
I have been using NOW brand oil (sweet almond, avocado, jojoba,…) for years. Best value. Amazon. And Dan-thanks for the video. I respect that you addressed the DIY, given that you do so many product reviews. Maybe you would consider doing some brand comparisons of carrier oils themselves. Example: compare different brands of sweet almond oil for characteristics like odor, viscosity, price. I love the NOW brand oils for skin and beard and always recommend them to others. Price is right and no hexane. Thanks for a great channel.
i just bought NOW jojoba oil from a natural store a few weeks ago. thats kinda why i am here. trying to make my own beard oil. seems like a good brand. not sure yet tho as im using some other blends too trying to figure out what my beard needs.
Tomorrow i will try making all the 3 options as i am not sure which one will work better for my beard. I am also thinking of trying my own mix, reason for that is i like straightening my beard with the blowdryer once in a week will need some heat protection on this day - i've read that mix of argon and avocado oil works best for that but i am not sure how high on the list they should be. Maybe you have some advice if putting just a small amount of them will be enough or they should be prioritized ?
What is the best way to measure when I'm making recipe for business. It's it best to put 30 does in each bottle or mix the formula together and then add to bottles?
I can’t workout if I should use unrefined or refined oils someone please help me! I want the oils to last a while but also have really good scented smell, more along the lines of different colognes etc
Just starting watching your videos as I’m interested to learn more and make my own. I have 2 questions. 1.How do you work out the ratios? 2.What about adding fragrance oils to the mix? I’m assume pure extract oils are best but they’re also expensive when you go higher quality.
1) totally personal preference. Normally done with trial and error 2) I do not recommend unless you REALLY know what you are doing. Scents can quickly become dangerous
Wherever you bought the peppermint oil from should have supplied you with a potency safety sheet. Follow that. I don’t have it, reach out tk the supplier
Came back a year later to remind myself of your recipes. Love the 3 different options you give. This time I made all of them and then made a couple different ones. I mixed some scented beard oil into a modified version of this recipe and it worked great. I have two beard oils that I like the smell of but they’re extremely overpowering. I really didn’t wanna waste them so I mixed it into my own and it worked great. This video is a great baseline for how to mix oils at home.
Another Great Video Dan! I just started making my own beard owl around a month ago, it is super fun to tinker around to see what works the best. The use of castor oil is a great idea. Through my experience of making diy beard oil, I have realized that it is honestly an art to get the right ingredients down. I have grown a much larger respect for beard oil companies after realizing that getting a certain batch locked down and mastered is hard. It is almost like baking or cooking, you need to have the exact ingredients, or it is straight up not going to be as useful as it could be. I just do it as a hobby right now but who knows maybe down the line I will start something up! You are really the teacher for everything bearded man, just want to say I appreciate everything that you do for this community.
Mike... as an owner i appreciate your comment! There is a lot more science involved than people realize. Each companies blends are like their own signature... unique to them 👍... have fun creating man!
Dan I just read a little about jojoba, the article said it 'tricks' the skin into thinking it has produced enough sebum, and stops producing it. Does that sound right, and is that a problem?
No, no worries there at all. It’s one of the best ingredients out there. I have heard that statement before as well, but there is no actual data or evidence to go with it
I want to add essential oil like peppermint and eucalyptus. What is the percentage or much better, the number of drops needed? I'm really looking forward to your reply cause I need it so badly. Thanks, boss.
I make my own mustache wax, it took a lot of trial and error, also ALOT of wasted money!! But I finally got the consistency I wanted!! Now I pretty much have a lifetime supply of mustache wax, so I'll never have to buy it again!!
That is awesome! In my other video I really touched on the wasted money, because many do not think about that. They assume it is a quick way to save money. Great point from experince!
My only question is where to get the most potent and freshest carrier oils like cold pressed yesterday type? I see oils at the pharmacy and who knows how good or fresh it is.
Great vid! I did this because I did not want a scent. If you ever do a butter vid, I have used a shea base and your favorite unscented drug store beard oil and add sweet almond, argan, vitamin E and EMU OIL in a small mason jar in a warm water bath to melt and incorporate. Per your advice Trusted Teacher, you can always put a couple drops from your favorite beard oil scent to an unscented butter or balm for an added scent. Best advice - #staypositive
I use Argan, Castor, Hemp Seed, and Jojoba as the carriers - works nicely for me. Does fractionated coconut smell like coconut? Not really a fan of coconut smell to be honest. The most important thing for me is I keep a "beard oil journal" where I date the batch, list the ingredients and ratios, and then record impressions and results for the duration of the bottle. I can get a bit OCD but I am a Statistician/Data Scientist so more data is a Good Thing.
I believe I address that in the start of the video, acknowledging the old video (if I did not, I meant to lol). I found an angle that I felt comfortable with and people really wanted it, especially during covid times. For sure isn’t cheap views, as you can tell by the low view total 😂😂
@@DanCBearded You acknowledge the video, but not why you went from “I’m not going to make that video” to making it 6 months later. But that makes sense. I will be making the recipes you have here they seem good.
@@6BURG9 what do you mean? I just wanted to know why he said he would never make the video and ended up doing it. He kinda talked crap about people making a video like this so it’s weird to see such a change. He made a video called D.I.Y dangers or something like that I can’t remember exactly cus it’s been almost a year sense I watched this.
I like that you fill in the watchers on the dangers. I've watched other videos that don't even mention the harmful effects. Leave it to the trusted teacher!
Great Video !!! Been making my own for years Beard Balm as well I can't see spending a fortune on 1 bottle of oil when I can get alot of oil (DIY) months worth for the same price or cheaper .....
Never though of making my own !! The only thing i would do different is use a good digital food scale, and using milligrams may make easier to figure out ratios!!
Made two 1oz bottles with your recipe in the medium formula. Really like it. Would like to add emu oil to my next batch, or to these. Any suggestions, or just go for it?! This 76 year old beard could use the nutrientment😅
Thanks, I started with your medium recipe and really like the results. I do prefer more scented oil. What would you recommend to add to the base? Essential oils? Any particular brand? Something else?
I do not recommend working with fragrances unless you really know what you are doing and have dug into the research. It is one area I do not give recommendations on. I am glad the blend worked well!
i did try my first diy beardoil with that caffeine sollution (10 drp. 10 drp. argan oil, 5 drp. castor oil , 10drp. jojoba oil, 10drp. grapeseed oil, 10 drp.blackseedoil and 1 drp. caffeine solution now i am still figuring out with one of them gave me the Burns if i find it out im gonna tell you :D@@DanCBearded
All right Dan, I'm going for it (just ordered the stuff)! Thanks for all the info you put out for us, it's been a big help over my last 8 years of this bearded lifestyle!
So, A) try to find sources where things aren't sitting around a warehouse getting stale, and B) here's a bunch of Amazon links to ingredients for my beard oil recipe. I took back my thumbs-up.
I saw your video on peppermint oil helping with growth. Would you think adding peppermint to beard oil be smart? Add some scent and extra growth power?
Herbalist here. This will be my first beard oil. Since my husband was clean shaven until he had a stroke 6 weeks ago, I am so very new to the beard world. We kind of like the look. Yours is very nice. My question is why measure rather than weigh?
Thank you! Weight is the legal way to measure. It’s what IFRA and the FDA go by. Has to do with different oils having different weights, even though they have the same volume. If you are asking about the drops route, that’s just what most new DIY’ers do
Awsome good to show how many drops you need but i would like to know:Do you not put in some essential oil so it can have a good smell??And good advice is if you can put in even Thyme and Rosmarin oil specially when you make beard oil becuse thyme and rosemarin is good for beard hair and for the skin etc etc..
Great video. I'm a new subscriber. Glad I found your video. I just started growing my beard out and was looking to make my own beard oil. I was surfing the net, DIY beard oils and started making some. Furthermore, I'm very glad you linked your video (Dangers of DIY Beard Products) to this video. I was using essential oils in my beard oil, and they were the for Aromatic diffusers. All the DIY recipes that I have read all use essential oils and not a single recipe mention anything about it. Some do say may burn skin if too much essential oil is used. Looks like I have some bear oil to throw away now. Thank you very much Dan.
Hey Dan quick question out of genuine curiosity , why dont you heat the oils when mixing them? Since we have different viscosities, wouldnt heat help to mix them better? Or it would end out in loosing properties?
With oil they will not mix anymore with heat than without. The different viscosities would only ever truly “mix” with an emulsification process, but that doesn’t add any benefits to the beard
Excellent video, Dan! Made my own oil after watching first time. Recipe: 7.5ml Sweet almond oil, 7.5ml Safflower oil, 5ml Castor oil, 5ml Sunflower oil, and 5ml Argan oil -- adding more sunflower or castor oil to get the feel just right. Used for two months now, and just made a new batch. My beard has never felt better!
@@DanCBearded Thank you! Even my misses has started using a few drops in her hair after showering, so the batch didn't last as long as I first expected! Always fun watching the Carrier oils 101 series!
I have started to experiment with different things for my beard and hair. Right now I mix a sandal wood oil with peppermint oil and beard balm. I read that peppermint oil is good for hair and beard growth. The sandal wood oil is my carrier sometimes I will mix mineral oil as a carrier oil. I think I will add a bit of pachouli next time. Pachouli and Brute calone smells great too as a daily scent.
Man awesome video Dan as always bringing something amazing and helpful!! This is gonna help so many guys who wanna try making there own and gives them a very trusted video and ratio to use!! for myself I will probably not do this just due to I trust the beard companies products and know they work and can smell amazing. only DIY thing i do is sometimes I add some castor oil for winter time into my hand with oils i use that are not very thick. and I also have some Emu oil i use and mix in sometimes as well!! Awesome video again man!! Thank you
Thank you. Used all of those oils in making soap back when. I used a kitchen scale to weigh ingredients. It should work quite well making beard oil. Interesting.
Just added clear boxing tape that overlapps to a sticky label. Kinda slick.. No smear yet. Clear boxing tape is completely on top of and around sticky label with adhesion to bottle directly at outer overlapped sides about a 1/16th inch to give a better seal.
Great video. Made my own tonight. With olive oil, sweet almond oil, vitamin E oil, and fragrance. Love it! What are your thoughts on olive oil? I seen good things about it for beards. This is the first time I have ever done anything other than just trim my beard. I’m liking it.
I like to use hemp oil instead of the fractionated coconut oil for the beard oil I make!! Jus need to fine tune essential oils so I can hopefully start selling at local markets....for now! Lol
Is there any science behind the ratios of oils in relation to health of beard or is it just mixed to the desired consistency? I believe I remember Holly with WnH saying something one night, in the live stream chat, about the difficulty of balancing the different fatty acids. That really sparked my interest. Sounds like you can't just mix whatever oils you want in whatever amounts you want and it actually work well. Is this the case? If so, do you have any advice for that? Sounds like some pretty in depth science might actually be behind some of these beard oils.
Truly all comes down to personal preference. There is science, but only when you are looking for an intended outcome. You can take literally any quality carriers, mix them how you would like, and you are going to have a safe and quality product. Just depends what you want that product to be like
I do my own oils and butters but buy scents from companies that I can’t replicate myself or use carriers like emu and ostrich that I don’t want to buy. I currently use a blend of castor, jojoba, sweet almond, apricot kernel, meadowfoam seed, argan and coconut
Dan can u use your own diy oil long term? Will it help keep your beard healthy like any other beard oils? Would your beard feel the same if u stopped using company’s oils and made diy with same carrier oils? How does company’s manage to make bad beard oil if it seems pretty simple?
This is perfectly healthy long term. I personally like to rotate blends and brands, because my beard gets used to products. Companies mess it up by adding bad ingredients
My Beard = Picky Unfortunately, fractionated coconut oil dries out my beard. Been experimenting for years and recently had to give up and accept that I can’t use oils that contain it. I haaaaaate missing out on using Beard Octane.
@@DanCBearded Since I’m a stubborn mofo, I’m going to still use my Downshift Oil, LCW and Butter - 3 days a week. Hurts my heart to think of throwing it away. Maybe using it up, in small stretches, won’t damage my beard...? Lol. 🤘 Keep up your good work, Dan. You’re appreciated.
I definitely want to try. I used to always cut my beard oil with some other oil like jojoba, coconut, avocado, argan, sweet almond and castor. I stopped since I bought better beard products. My wishes will be to make a nice scent. Will it be good to mix some essential oil? I already do peppermint and castor oil at night. Do it be the same amount if I had eucalyptus, lavander or maybe rosemary. Thanks 🌹
Great video. Looking to make a non scented oil that doesnt involve coconut (allergic). Any suggestions on an alternative to coconut? Or would u recommend a non coconut unscented beard oil over a DIY? I work outside in Texas and use a heat brush. Thanks
Just ordered greenhorn. Decided to also make an non fragrant oil using Jojoba Argon--since I use a heated brush Grapeseed Sweet almond Would you recommend anything else or replacing any of these?
Good stuff Dan, do these ingredients have special qualities at all in terms of what they do for your beard? I know some of them work with our beards better based on their viscosity and the ability of our beard to absorb, I’m just wondering if certain ingredients have qualities that help/sustain our beards in certain ways..
Before I woke up, that is before I knew there was a Dan C I used to mix different oils together, My main oil was kitchen olive oil, talk about a greasy mess.😩 I now leave my oils to the experts, and have a nice collection of oil balms and butters on a tray in the bathroom, as every guy knows buying beard oil‘s is addicting. Here’s an idea for you Dan that I think the guys will like, set something up so people can send you pictures of their beard balm‘s and oils collection, Then show them on your live show, mine is kind of turning into a work of art with a heavy Christmas theme👍 in fact I got the whole Christmas themed butter cans from fable beard company, and being i started collecting after Christmas it was all on sale. 🎅
Yup! The thicker the oil, the more coating or sealing it is. The thinner the oil, the more fast absorbing it is. All comes down to personal preference and what works best with your beard and skin
Once there was Bill Nye the science guy. Now we have Dan Command the science man. Part 2 should be adding some scent blends to your oil because let's be real, none of us are going to be as good as the experts at this anyway, lol.
Really cool Dan! I wish I had this when I was experimenting with creating oils. I think I put the most effort into making my own mustache wax though, until I found Death Grip who had unscented waxes. Now I just leave it all to the pros. I was saving a little money, but my blends weren't as nourishing as the ones we know and love. This recipe you made is definitely better than some of the two part mixtures I tried to make. I also experimented with creating it, so I could add essential oils for scent. Now I have found companies that have all essential oil blends 🙂
@@DanCBearded That is for sure. When I would do essential oil blends I would only do one kind. Better than nothing at times, but the pros are just that much better at it 🙂
