Hello. I just happened upon your video. If I may, I would like to suggest a few enhancements to how you prepare your beard balm. I make all of my family's hair and body products and have been for many years. I make my husband's beard oil and butters too. When melting down your ingredients, it is much more recommended to use the double boiler method...direct heat is always a no-no. This helps to preserve nutrients, keeps chemical bods much more stable and predictable, and stops the chemicals in your pot from reacting with the ingredients. Next, you may want to think about whipping your mixture after letting it completely cool. This introduces air to produce a much lighter, easier to handle product. It will also give you more yield per batch. Hope this helps. Happy beard growing!
Casandra Smith Thanks so much! I have seen people use the double bouler method and always wondered the difference! Now I know 🤣 Haven't tried whipping it yet however I def plan on it!! Thanks Again!!
If you do the 'whip after completely cooling' step instead of pouring into the tins to cool and set, how do you manage the tinning process to still end up with neat tins of set product?
Great video! I am a soapmaker- I use shea butter in a lot of my products. I saw some of the other comments... I would also suggest using a double boiler. Also, shea butter loses its beneficial properties when you heat it. (It can scorch at a low temp.) I would suggest melting your beeswax with your carrier oils and then adding in the shea butter once it has been removed from the flame. It melts at about 82 degrees. I hope that helps. :)
Soap maker here and exact comment I was about to make. Only add on, be careful of what essential oils you add for this. Lime and sweet orange are two that are problematic with the sun. To be safe, read up on your essential oils first.
So I am trying to make my own beard balm but mine don't really have that much smell? When and how much oil should I add? I am wondering if I am doing something wrong.
I'm self employed I make natural bar soaps whipped soap scrubs lip scrubs and now I'm adding Beard Balm to my collection. I'm glad I watched this video you reminded me I need BEESWAX
AWESOME. Keep up the great work. Lots of good corrections noted here, but overall great job. And your beard IS evidence of this. Looks lush and healthy.
i have been making beard balm for a while now. I've learned using mango butter instead of shea butter helps the balm feel less greasy. i have some customers that don't want the oily feeling after applying beard balm. i aslo add kaolin clay to make it even less oily. just don't use raw beeswax with kaolin clay...it creates a "honey" scent to it. not sure why.
thanks for the recipe. just made my first batch. only change i made is that i subbed the carrier oils for Jojoba oil and castor oil, and used peppermint essential oil. can't wait to try it. cheers.
This is a fabulous video! Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and being open to suggestions as well... that is a rare combination in a person! Keep up the great work! Liked and subscribed!
What would its shelf life would be? I would like to get into making my own balm, but I would be worried about the left over ingredients going bad before I get a chance to to use it.
Thanks for a great video with instructions and source of products. I just started my beard, 6 weeks ago, I’m older. Always had a mustache. I make my own oils, probably just need beeswax and Shea butter.
Was there any hint of separation of ingredients, as it cooled? (like maybe the top or bottom having more oil versus wax or butter) Faster cooling in the fridge, just to make sure it remains a consistent solution, might be something to try.
Hey there new viewer here. Glad we found your channel and look forward to more videos. I have never grown a beard before. I am 32 years old and never done it. Maybe it is time!!! I dont know that my wife will like it.
I stayed tuned and you showed me! Thanks for this! I've been wanting to get out of the beard balm industrial complex (haha, kidding) and experiment with some of my own products.
Hi there, great video! Might I suggest using a stainless steal double boiler, I make my own products and find that the stainless double boiler works the best. Thank you for sharing
This video is the balm! haha sorry couldnt resist. Can you, or did you, do a follow up on the smell using the 10 drops of essential oils? Was it enough? not enought?
Love'em. Thank you. Noticed that some of them cool in different shades. (Darker/lighter circles). Any thoughts onwhat causes this? Or it's normal? Thank you.
Hi, thanks for the video. I want to create my own beard balm, but I don't want to use the beeswax. Do you think the ingredients (butters and oils) will harden anyway, once cold, without beeswax?
Thanks for the great video! I'm wondering what are the quantities for larger batches? and is the beard balm much different from the moustache wax? I'm trying to start a business selling beard grooming products by doing it myself. Thanks
Mansour Barri Thanks for watching! I tried doubling the recipe for a couple batches and it worked great.. check out themanlinessskit.com link in the description for the other recipes.. they should work just fine by bulking all the ingredients to make however much you want! Good luck!
You can use a fragrance oils instead of the essential oil he used. The sky is the limit...you can find them on Amazon or most soaping supply companies. Hope this helps. : )
I tired doing it at home , I bought all products oil, butter , wax , you named it they all cause me dandruff and oily skin I stopped it I just let me beard grow
Be careful with Castor oil. It has great BCAA’s and other nutrient values for the beard but it’s REALLY damaging and drying for beards. The percentage of castor oil in your carrier oil blend wants to be about 10%, no more. I use 10% Castor, 30% Coconut, 30% Jojoba and 30% Argan. Do not use equal amounts of castor. I almost RUINED my beard completely when first starting out making my own oils by using too much Castor oil in the mix. It fried my beard. Rectified it, reduced the castor percentage and it’s been good since.
Can u use avocado oil for the carrier oil I also got some grape seed sweet almond and coconut oil mix in together can u use those as well for the carrier oil in stead of the Aragon oil or jojoba oil
How long does it take to cook the beeswax or melt p and what would you cook it on I have a 8oz shea butter on the way along with the beeswax pellets I have a mixer or sweet almond oil grape seed and coconut oil in one along that has lemongrass rosemary pine needle cinnamon lavender and tee tree how many tablespoon and tee spoon should I use
Anthony Villa yes it kind of does which I actually don't mind, but one commenter mentioned using mango butter instead of Shea butter for a less oily/greasy feel..
lucky.t.72 when you mellted ,then scents come out...try less besswax or shea butter,or add more oils, but i found myself Mango butter works the best,be carefull because is thicker than shea butter, all that matter is ratio of butter ,beeswax & oils, also you can make a beard butter without wax,or just put a little wax,i put hemp seed oil for green color...its amazing....
Hey there! thankss to you I've seen beard balm for the first time ever in Turkey. And guess whos product is this? Yeah, you guessed right. I made it thanks to you! But I've got one question. While I was shopping in the store I smelled the orange oil but didn't fit for my tase. I wanted a smell more manly or some smell like we always want to have but couldn't actually find. So what else would you recommend me? No lavander :) Great beard btw! Thanks in advance. :)
I would look for a Essential oil or Fragrance oil company that is near you or ships reasonably. You will need "usually" not always, but 2 times or 3 times more Fragrance Oil than Essential oil in products. Add a little then stir, then add more if needed. You can always add but not take away. Good luck!
Hi 🙂. I know you have probably figured it out by now but I make these for my husband and small business and I have used frankincense and sandalwood. I even sometimes mix them together and makes a good manly scent.
Soooooo I made my own beard balm....and it is WAY...WAY...to thick...I think I used to much bee's wax. Do you know a good way to thin it out and make it so it isn't so thick?
thefamilymixx well I ended up having to melt it down twice before I got the right consistency. I ended up having to add just over four ounces of fractionated coconut oil. But I think it is fixed now. Next time I will only be using a quarter of the bee's wax that the recipe calls for. It was a good learning experience.
You listed jojoba oil in the description, but never showed you adding it. Also, what type of carrier oil? You mentioned it, but never showed you adding it.
+Richard Reynolds yes sir it's all in your preference.. you can Google what the different carrier oils will do for your beard and skin there is a ton of info online.
On the manliness kit page you recommended, none of the recipes they mentioned followed the one you did. For example you used 2 tbsp' of beeswax and Shea butter, yet the closest recipe on their site used 2 tbsp's beeswax and 3 tbsp's Shea butter. Was there a reason you went away from their recipes?
kyle baxter Good Call! Yes, the reason I chose to cut back the Shea butter is because I want a little more hold from my balm! I have been playing alot with my ratios in hopes of finding the perfect blend for me!! Thanks for watching!
thefamilymixx yeah I followed your recipe and I found that I wasn't in love w the texture. Kinda like a smidge greasy when I press into the top of it. And it was a lil difficult to press into. But I did enjoy your video nonetheless
kyle baxter Thanks again! Awesome that you made your own! There was a commenter below that shared some great ideas that I am definitely going to try as well.. Thanks Again! Glad you enjoyed
Great video. Save yourself even more time and money, just buy a jar of virgin coconut oil for 5 bucks. Hands down the best thing for your beard. Just saying.
