I love the build!! I did an above ground build. However, my koi collection has grown and the wife would like it in the ground. So, that will be more or less be my next project. Keep up the great work!
Thank you. We really appreciate that! It seems like there just aren’t enough gallons in the world for all the wet pets we always want. My personal pond is 5,000 gallons and looking to expand by at least 50 percent soon. I know the struggle all too well!
@@CapeFearKoi Just subbed man, it always amazes me how we are so apart geographically but we share so many aspects in Koi keeping, I always thought that(from most YT koi channels I've visited) muricans are into the neat "Neat/Aesthetically-Pleasing/Clean" type of ponds. This is one of the times I am glad am wrong. And yes, it is an obsession. Hey mad respect for the reply. 🙏
@@kkidcruz6118 you trying to say my pond is ugly?? 😆 Glad to help out and be part of the global obsession and I really appreciate you supporting and subscribing. It means a lot to us at Cape Fear Koi!
@@CapeFearKoi Quite the opposite man, I have a few ornamental ponds here and there, but box ponds will always outnumber them. As a matter of fact, your pond is very simplistic yet super effective, it teaches a lot of people that simplicity is key to a sustainable hobby/obsession. Hahaha I am sorry if it came out wrong. I meant well.
Ha. I know. I have thicker skin than that! Sometimes ponds are definitely overly thought and have too much “stuff”. I do also have an ornamental main pond but keep it simple with basics needed for fish health and well being and looking to remodel it before long.
I hoping to have it as soon as possible. I’m in the middle of fixing my rental to sell and need a roof after the last hurricane. I want to get the liner and drain in ASAP so I can have more stock for everyone!!
Great video! I leaned a lot! Didn’t know about the dragon snot! Planning to build a pond in the future! I’m glad I’ll be able to revert back to some of your videos! Thanks Cape Fear Koi!
Really enjoyed finding this video, looks really simple and effective, have you managed to finish it yet amd do a part 2 upload? I'm going to build my own raised pond amd I thought I had a good design using railway sleepers until I saw your design. Look forward to seeing it completed, just subscribed, thanks buddy!
Hey Nick, Thanks for subscribing!! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I have so much going on with other construction and family matters, I haven’t been able to complete part 2, but definitely plan to this Spring when things calm down a bit. I’d be happy to answer any questions in the meantime.
Thanks a bunch Rob. I really do appreciate that. I’m not gonna lie, we have fantastic weather and last winter was very mild with only 5 nights getting below freezing. It’s almost November and I was wearing shorts today. Hope your build is going great!
Love watching pond builds from around the world and always wondered hear in the Uk we use black or grey pressure pipe only seldom do I see a build with anything but white pipe from your side of the water is white the norm with black/grey hard to come by. Thanks for filming
I’m glad you enjoyed it and I truly appreciate the feedback. All my raised ponds were built this way mainly because that’s what I had in the lumber pile. Overall, I pleased with them. Here on the East Coast we use white pvc and that’s is the main plumbing pipe. I did live in California for a couple of years and we used black ABS pipe. That was 15 years ago so I’m not sure if they have changed. Maybes someone can chime in. It definitely interesting to see how everyone does things around the world. Hopefully round 2 is coming soon! See you around!
As I said the pipe thing is a little funny to me seldom do we see white pipe over hear as to this side of world we seem to go for more formal ponds Uk where as your side in ground natural rock pebble bottoms over hear stone in a pond bottom is just a dirt trap so we steer clear of that sort of thing
Enjoying your videos. The large pond you often stand in front of (maybe your pond?) what are the dimensions of that pond. Really like the looks and size of that.
Thank you very very much. I really do appreciate the kind words and it’s nice to hear our hard work making the videos is appreciated as well. Yes, that is our personal pond and the current dimensions are 14x16x3.5 and we made it with what we could with a liner we bought secondhand. The majority of the pond was resourced and made from scraps and plants we accumulated over time. We really enjoy being able to have the pond be part of our everyday.
Excellent job! Have one suggestion and it is that the person filming the video should please, please, please, try to move the camera -- whether a professional camera or a cell phone camera -- more slowly. There are too many segments when the camera jumps rather rapidly from point t point and this causes discomfort to the eyes of the person watching the video. Other than that your work is great and worth sharing. Blessings to all who are responsible for such magnificent, high quality work.
Looks wicked nice1 could u fibreglass that pond if u wanted too just thought i would ask cos im thinking about building a pond and they way you have done it looks like a much easier way than concrete bottom slab and brickwork 🤟👍
Stevo Richardson I appreciate that! I’m not sure about glassing it since I’m not a glass guy. I would assume certain types of reinforcement would be needed to do so. This way was pretty straight forward and less expensive and less labor than slab or brickwork. The larger one next to it has been going strong for over a year and a half with issues. I’m glad you found it useful and hope it helps with your future build.
Hi, I'm thinking about having one what is sitting next to my deck. It might have to go deeper in the ground so that it level with the deck( deck is 2-4 feet high due to slope. do you think the koi can survive the winter( lowest temp is 20-30 degree max. virginia weather)?
Any worries on walls bowing. That's my worry. I wanna tear mine down and use your style. But I want to know id rebar necessary with those posts you have there in the middle.? Lmk thanks..
Kevin Toekimin yes my friend!! We have $20k of roofing and repairs we need to do from the hurricane and some it starts tomorrow! Hopefully we can get on part 2 soon after! I was just out there a few minutes ago looking at it and thinking how much I want to get it finished and filled with fish. I need it finished so I can stock it with fish for sale! It’s coming!! I promise!!! 😊
Modesto Elias thank you very much. We’re hoping to have it done in the near future. I need the space!! And more importantly, people are asking!! We had a hurricane come through and cause some damages and we have to get a new roof and other repairs, so some other projects had to be put on temporary hold. Thanks for checking in!
Cape Fear Koi thanks for the response, sorry to hear you got hit by the hurricane I just ripped my carport cover I’m 20 min from key largo , I’m building a pond very similar but with a viewing window I was curious how your gonna hook up the skimmer , thanks be safe
Modesto Elias I’m installing a no niche skimmer and bottom drain, then running to the external pump and bead filter. It’s a simple and effective setup with easy maintenance.
As for ledges inside the pond? If so, no they don’t need them at all and people put them in for personal reasons such as setting plants or a place to step out in case one falls in. Steep walls are better and safer for koi, especially if predators are at the edge which keep the fish at a safe depth and herons can’t jump in and chase the fish down. On my next pond design, I will not have any ledges or use plants in the pond. When koi get big, they destroy everything and it’s best to have upgraded filtration instead of relying on plants. I prefer the plants to be in the outside of the pond as it’s generally much cleaner to do so.
@@CapeFearKoi OK that makes a lot of sense. Thanks. I just built my first pond. We had a pet turtle that got too big for her tank. Didn't feel right setting her loose as we had received her as a hatchling. I have learned a lot from all of this, like how bad an algae bloom can be if you dont have any shade near the pond (and how to build a UV sterilizer). Love the education you are providing. Thanks!
Difficult to say, since all the lumber was reclaimed from a fishing pier being built. Usually those boards are roughly a collar a board foot, but those particular uprights can be over $60 earth for an 8’ piece. If you can find an old deck being dismantled, that would be and option to save a few $$$.
Thank you! I’m sure you can make it happen. Just one pice at a time. If you wanted to tackle such a project, please ask any questions and we’d be happy to help out in any way we can.
bloopagility it’s in the making! Having a setback with the liner with everything going on and looking to have it done as soon as possible! We need the extra room!!
Yes sir. All salved from a local fish pier. All framing is treated. Inside will be lined with fish safe epdm liner and will have a video on that install. What little rainwater that touched the wood and splashed in will be heavily diluted with well water when performing routine water changes.
I grew up in Southern Maryland and had the same mix as you and was a nightmare in the winter trying to dig a hole. I’ve never had digging than my current version and is pretty much sugar sand. Bad thing is it isn’t as stable clay or rocky soils.
