Twin size bed on top, full size bed on bottom. Stairs and railing made of northern soft maple. Bed frames made of 2x4s, casing is 1/2” cabinet grade plywood, front faces are 3/4” plywood. I am a hobbyist, not a pro.
Recomendación, saquen el ventilador de techo y pongan uno en la pared o un aire para los chicos. Les quedo increíble, a los peques se ve que les encantó, sigan así. ❤❤❤❤
that is 1 absolute determination from the DAD part. REally like the way this human doing it yourserlf(DIY) and let the kids knows the real meaning of efforts
What a talented and loving set of parents to create something so special for their beautiful children! So impressive! Really incredible work, and a testament to your partnership!
An absolute stunning job ! Big kudos to you, I'm sure the kids will love this. Thank you so much for this video, I'm gonna use this as a reference for a similar project. 👌👌👌
very nice - If I build these I'll make a few changes - both beds would be full size - you can never have enough extra sleeping space !! Great job, I'm sure the boys are thrilled
My fiancé and I want to do something like this for our future kids (we want 3) and this was so entertaining and educative! Great job and your kids are so cute!
That's pretty awesome. I like this design for my space, though instead of the full sized bed I'm probably going to either leave it open for play or a desk. This got the gears turning!
Sorry, but I don’t. Most of it is cabinet grade 1/2” plywood. The trim on the front is 3/4”. The shelves are made with 1x4s, the frames of the bed with 2x4s.
Thank you for the nice compliment! I sketched my plans with pencil and paper based on the ceiling height of 9 ft. I do not have any detailed plans or a material list for the project posted anywhere on the internet (I don't have a blog). If there is interest, I could post a video about how I calculated the materials needed and the dimensions to fit the room.
Great job! Which material did you put on top of the wood framing? MDF? Plywood? I am currently building a bunk bed and was going to drywall over but what you covered with look much better and easier.
I used plywood but MDF would have worked great as well. The plywood gives the structure stability (and durability). I worry that drywall wouldn’t be strong enough.
Great build! Looking to build something similar, but I know it won't be as awesome! Did you ever end up adding a hand rail for the stairs? Seems it would be a safety/code issue. Again, great work!
I just used your video to make my own bed for my daughter. I’m having the hardest time finding lights like yours that have switches on the fixture. Where did you get yours?
Thanks! I believe we bought it from Home Depot online. Not sure if it’s still there. If you Google “wall sconce with switch,” you’ll find some options. I wound up switching it to a closed type, because one of my sons started taking out the bulb and I didn’t want them to get electrocuted.
Looks nice but the mom in me see the gaps in the railing are to wide. Change out those lights for something flush to the wall and enclosed and that ceiling fan 🤯
I live this! I just have a concern regarding the method you are holding up the top bunk, I saw just one screw going in, how did you secure the top bunk to the frame?
I secured it with screws through each of the upright 2x4s. I had to countersink the screws to allow them to reach the twin frame through the long side of the upright 2x4.
I'm thinking of doing a couple of loft beds fir my kids, did you attach the bed frame to wall? Might seem like a silly question but thought I would ask
Hi, I’ve learned a lot from your video, thanks for sharing. May I ask if you are using untreated timber or treated? Would you have concern if using treated interior framing timber? Thanks.
@@505rokks Sorry, I don't have any real design drawings. I scribbled some dimensions on paper as I was building it, but that's all. I measured the height of the ceiling and the thickness of the mattresses and did the math to ensure both beds would have the same amount of space above the mattress. I measured the length and width of the mattresses and added a few inches to the openings so that they wouldn't fit too tightly and it would be easy to change the sheets. I guessed on the width of the stairs, which are 19" wide, and they are comfortable for kids or adults to climb without feeling too tight. The shelves are about 17" wide.
Sorry, my camera cut off while I was cutting the staircase. I marked out the steps and cut a 2x12 with a circular saw (Skilsaw). I had to do some math to determine the rise and depth of the stairs.
Sorry, I don’t have any plans. I just made the dimensions to fit the space. (Same amount of head space above each bed. Stairs are 19” wide. I left a couple inches of room around the edges of the mattresses to make it easier to change the sheets.)
The second step flips up and the kids can crawl inside it. I guess the answer is yes, because lately they have taken to storing their 5,000 stuffed animals inside it! I built the stairs in a way that I could create drawers under each stair in the future if I wanted to.
@@wizard_of_eyes that seems like it’d be even more storage. I hate the wasted space of some stairs, when we remodeled our kitchen, I turned the coat closet into a long walk in pantry/storage underneath the rounded stairs. Great looking project!

I found my simple paper and pencil sketch of the dimensions. If you want to reply back with your email address, I can send it to you then delete the comment

I initially planned to do exactly that, but decided not to. With a box spring under the full size mattress, there is actually only 3 inches between the box spring and the floor. I could have added drawers in the place where the box spring is, but construction of the drawers would have added a lot of time to the project. I also considered adding drawers under each one of the stairs, but decided to make it a “hideout” for the kids. (See picture at the very end of the video). They love playing in there. I figured I could go back and add drawers in those places in the future, but we didn’t really need the storage and I wanted to finish the project quickly. It only took 2 weeks to do during quarantine.
