In this video, I'm sharing how we made our kids a DIY built-in bunk bed. This adorable bunk bed makes bedtime truly magical (pretty sure I'm living vicariously through my kiddos). As always, the step-by-step project plans are available on my website, along with more photos and details.
This DIY bunk bed project might look complicated, but it's not! The design is simple yet smart - we're using 2x4 stud lumber and tongue-and-groove boards that "wrap" around the framework. You could build this bunk bed in just a few weekends! The design is similar to the DIY kids playhouse I built years ago: jenwoodhouse.c...
Watch the video to see how we built this bunk bed (with tips and tricks along the way!), as well as the mistakes we made and how we worked around them. Also, even though this bunk bed is built into the room, I designed it so that it will be fairly easy to disassemble when we're ready to move out.
My kids love to read and draw before bedtime, so I included a couple of shelf units to the headboard for storage. It even has built-in lighting - and I didn't have to do any electrical work! As a 14yr old crafter/artist I took your plan and tweaked it to make a floating bed with a modern feel to it! I used the bottom empty area to add my vanity+work desk abomination that I’ve designed! I am so grateful for your video because since I have an okay sized room(I’m getting a seperate “secret” room built in so I had to go with a smaller room) this helped me use the vertical space! My parents are building a new house and I’ve taken the responsibility of designing and making my room as I like such projects! If all my calculations are correct and my model is accurate to my future bedroom then I am SO happy because it looks SOOOOO cool! So I wanted to share this to anyone reading this who is interested in customising their room, DO IT! I know it’s gonna get frustrating and you probably will spend hours crying while continuously erasing and adding more things to your plan re measuring and stuff. It’s going to be hard work but just don’t give in and be creative! Take inspiration and tweak things to fit your taste! It’s so worth it! And thank you Jen for helping me design my epic room! Oh and you older peeps who like this but are to embarrassed to make it...YOLO! JUST DO IT WHO GIVES A CRAP IF PEOPLE JUDGE YOU? BE YOU MY DARLINGS!!!💕💕💕💕

I would love to see a double loft style bed that connects with stairs in the middle. I know it’s a tall order. I have 2 boys that are 13 & 8 and my 13 year old really wants his privacy. I think two lofts side by side with stairs in the middle would give them space from each other but also allow them to hang out! I realllllly want the frames to be full... twins are just too small for them. Ugh. Desks underneath.. maybe a way to carpet the stairs optional? Tall tall order I know. I would love your thoughts!!! ❤️❤️

Nice project, but the outlet against the mattress might be a fire hazzard or it may even cause electrocution. Perhaps you can remove the outlet completely or move it higher?

I wondered if I need to sand and paint the wood which is not going to be visible. The main structure just jointed and planned, and the tongue and groove sanded and painted. I don't appreciate your rude comment, Rich H. I addressed both of these issues in the video; clearly you weren't paying attention. The mattresses can easily fit through the giant windows and the all-in-one zippered bedding (which I linked in the description) makes it much easier to change the sheets.
