DIY Bumper Crack Repair

Here's how to repair a crack in a plastic bumper.
Cracked bumpers are common on many vehicles that frequent shopping malls drive on rural roads. Often times a replacement is not warranted due to high cost or low quality replacements.
This video demonstrates how you can fix your cracked bumper by yourself at home, with supplies you can get from any auto-parts store.
First, a V-groove is grinded into the back of the crack to increase the surface area for the epoxy adhesion. The crack is then sanded and cleaned.
The top of the crack was secured with a clamp and the front of the crack was held together with tape. JB-Weld Plastic Bonder was then used to fill in the crack from behind. Drywall tape was used as a reinforcement and the setup was allowed to cure overnight.
After the 2-part epoxy is dried, it will be rock hard. From the front, the crack should now be much less visible if it was aligned properly.
Sand the front of the bumper around the damaged area. Use plastic auto-body filler to fill in the cracks, and progressively sand the filler off before applying primer.
Use some rubbing alcohol, paint thinner or acetone to clean the surface before applying primer. The primer was then wetsanded before paint was applied.
The paint was ordered in a spray can from CarQuest and mixed according to the paint code. The color match is very close, just slightly darker due to the 12 year old oxidized paint, and there is a decent pearl that shines back in the sunlight.
Two thin layers are applied then allowed to dry for a few hours before handling. The bumper can then be replaced on the vehicle and fasteners reattached. Wait a few days for the paint to fully cure before applying polish and wax.
Now stand back and enjoy your repaired bumper. The whole process shouldn't take more than a day if you factor in drying time.
This video is an excellent tutorial to follow:

great result. Can get smoother results if you use spot putty before you prime. Also the sanding should have started with 80 grit for the bondo to stick the best. Still worked i see but we shouldnt jump from 80 to 320, but go from 80- 180-320- 400 This ensures the 80 is erased by 180, and 180 erased by 320, and the paint sticks to 400 just fine. otherwise it was still good. I'd recommend fiberglass sheets since they are like 3$ from walmart. And also epoxy gorilla glue @ 5$ Still not hating on your video bro!

I fixed my bumper using construction adhesive, then the Bondo fiberglass repair to fill in the small cracks and holes that were left. Finally put the Bondo finishing filler over everything. It goes on smoother than the fiber glass and you can sand it almost to a high sheen with 1500 grit sandpaper. I then spray painted it and lightly sanded with 2000 grit after first coat and put a very light second coat after that. Finished it all with two quick coats of clear coat and used 3000 grit between coats. Very much a novice at autobody repair and completely winged it, but it came out looking perfect. Especial considering it was a pretty extensive crack. Has been holding strong for just about two years now.

Good video, but from my experience, the Bondo can initially be leveled with careful use of a spatula, eliminating the need for extensive sanding, and leaving as much of the original surface intact as possible.

Well its the way you can do it at home! A professional would probably replace the bumper, since they're fairly cheap.
@tomharrell1954
@tomharrell1954 7 лет назад
speedkar99 I guess you're right about that. There is a liquid two part plastic. Just like the JB weld. You put it on a piece of plastic like a sandwich bag. Mix it and push it against the bumper. Spread it like bondo. It becomes the bumper. Flip the bumper over when the plastic is hard grind out the crack and fill it with the same plastic. That actually makes the hold mend. Great job!! Show people your work and I am sure you could make some bucks,

From an engineering perspective, sharp edges are stress concentrations since it's a function of the inverse radius. At the edge of a crack the radius is zero which means stress approaches Infiniti. When you drill a hole you effectively made the crack's radius the same as the radius as the drill bit, which is far greater than the almost zero radius of the crack. Therefore the stresses in that region are a finite amount, and the bumper crack is less likely to propagate.

Just a few question, what type of primer should I use since it is a plastic bumper and not metal? Also, same goes for body filler, what is the best filler for plastic in this case the bumper? I heard regular bondo used on metal areas do not adhere in plastic parts really well and can crack. Can you let me know name of primer you recommend and name of body filler I would highly appreciate it. thanks!
@speedkar99

You need a plastic filler. Not sure what to say on the primer, but something flexible.

Hi there is a special plastic primer for plastic bumpers. The bumper can also be wiped with a strong solvent to make the paint stick better I think acetone maybe chloroform will work
@niklashultkrantz603

Keep you breath if you use chloroform. It's pretty strong or use a mask.
