DIY Chair - Using Only a Drill and a Jigsaw!

This week I'll show you how to make a great looking chair, using limited tools only! With only a drill and a jigsaw!

Using the cutout templates there’s no measuring required and no complicated angled cuts. Just cut out the paper templates, glue them on to the wood, and cut out the pieces with the jigsaw. I used 18mm birch ply for the frame and the bend jigs. 4mm ply laminated in two layers for the seat and the backrest. And 25mm (1”) broomsticks for the legs.

DIY doesn't need to be simple.

DIY is often meant for people who regularly DIY tho. Even this project is a hassle for someone without basic carpentry materials lying around. For example, I have hundreds of dollars worth of DIY crafting supplies in my basement, as well as some of my grandfather's old woodworking tools, but I would still need to buy wood for the chair, "scrap" wood for the lamination section, a jigsaw, screws, a bunch of sandpaper, and wood glue. Obviously these things are easier to get than, say, a CNC, but it would still be a hassle. I really appreciate that this project is super accessible - the majority of people seriously interested in this project probably have these materials, or at least an easy way to get them. But there is still a huge barrier to entry at ANY level of DIY, so I think it's a little unfair when people (not you specifically, just as a whole) look down on makers who have been collecting materials for years. Even the simplest of projects aren't always feasible for the average person.

Usually one someone writes "simple tools" or "only using a drill" they just make it with the fancy power tools and suggest it also could be made without them. But this is truly a only jigsaw and drill project. I can see myself designing and building a similar one in my spare time. Awesome design and build sprinkled with some pretty nice tips. Thanks!

Designing something that looks good is fairly easy, designing something based on manufacturing restrictions is fairly easy, combing both is not so easy. IMHO this is an excellent example of the latter!

Alexandre Chappel I second that. I work out of an apartment on my balcony. I need easy accessible stuff that doesn’t require insane tools. I could fit a mitresaw and small sander but that’s it. More designs like this please! The possibilities are endless with the template approach. Really clever idea.

Props man. From teaching people that don't have access to any fancy tools, forcing yourself to go with just a couple basic tools, and doing it for real, is not easy. Much more about all the prep design work you did then the actual building!

This is by far the BEST diy project I've ever seen. Here's why: 1. The finished chair is elegant, seems sturdy and is aesthetically pleasing. 2. Most other youtubers in this space would use their really expensive tools we don't have while just saying "don't worry, if you don't have this CNC you can get it done just as well with a jigsaw"...but they don't actually do it or show us how to do it with the jigsaw. 3.
