I came here to say the same thing. I haven't tried it myself but I know Cam from Blacktail Studio swears by Rubio plus a ceramic top coat. Of course he does sell his own version, but I think the point is still valid.

Yeah, Blacktail studio has a woodworking specific ceramic coat that makes it more shiny and way more water protective. The water just beads off of it.

@@TomLichti In Cam's defense, he'd been singing the praises of Black Forest Wood Co.'s ceramic coatings for years before he came out with his own equivalent product. That said, I'd also like to see Alex run some tests of his own on whichever brands he can get his hands on.

Close but no cigar:P Prices vary, gone up a lot recently, think peak in winter was just over $1/kwh, which is 2-4x what it was two years ago. (but there was also some government subsidy that varied)

@@DesconectadoOaxaca Think about it. An orbital sander rotates in a direction opposite to the wood grain, causing scratches to appear only when the grit moves against the grain. It is impossible to scratch wood when sanding parallel to the grain, which is not feasible with a circular sanding motion. However, the square-shaped vibrating sander is an exception. It can also scratch the grain, although it is less likely to do so because its movement is mostly in one direction, rather than circular. The only advantage of an orbital sander is its speed, as it covers a larger area while aggressively cross grain sanding. The trade-off, however, is that it tends to create more scratches, which are usually not noticeable until stain is applied. In a nutshell, with rotary sanders, and sometimes vibrating sanders if an overly coarse grit is used, hand sanding is almost always necessary thus taking longer to sand not shorter. Also, you'll discover that using the correct grit matching the wood's hardness in hand sanding saves time, as you only need to sand once with the correct grit. However, hand sanding requires more pressure than using a sander, leading to faster fatigue in the forearms and hands making it unpopular. Many beginners tend to over sand the wood and are unaware of how to achieve a fine finish without excessive sanding. Professional woodworkers, on the other hand, typically require only one round of sanding on unfinished wood. An experienced professional can sand an entire set of raw wood kitchen cabinets, similar to yours, in about 3-4 hours (or less). The final finish would then take an additional 2-3 hours for two sanding passes plus finish, applying three thin layers of either water-based or oil-based finishes. The key to their efficiency lies in avoiding the need to sand out scratches and prevent the grain from being raised, which is often caused by sanding machines. Plus, they know how to use the final finish material to reduce sanding time. In short, they sand once and don't back track through each stage. It's worth mentioning that these highly skilled professionals are rare to find. Hand sanding has become a lost art since machines require less physical effort and create the illusion of being faster. It's only when you witness a master craftsman with decades of experience at work that you truly appreciate the difference.
