DIY CNC Router - Milling Aluminium Finger Clamp

Finally had some time to dial my machine in to cut some aluminium.
Most of the cutting is done with a 4 mm single flute carbide end mill. With the exception of chamfering where I used an 8 mm 90 deg spot drill.
I don't have a compressed air setup in my workshop at the moment so the cutting was done mostly dry with a few squirts of WD40. The addition of an air blast/micro-droplet system would greatly increase my options in terms of cutters and feeds/speeds and machining strategy, so that is on the list of upgrades to come.
The surface finish on the profiling was pretty good, I think a 3 flute carbide cutter may give a better result or at least finish the job in less time.
My machine design/build is documented on my website: www.jeremyyoung...
If you would like a copy of the 3D model for my CNC machine, please vidit my Etsy store:

This machine design is wonderfully free of big rigidity bottlenecks. I really like it!

Great project, just thought you might want to consider a vacuum attachment, I 3D printed one and have a simple video of it working.

Hi Dan, thanks for the suggestion, I've actually already built and attachment but found my vacuum wasn't powerful enough. Waiting until I can afford a decent dust extractor. Also in this case, i'm not sure if extraction is a good idea when machining aluminium dry, i'm looking at getting an air blast hooked up.

@@JeremyYoungDesign Did you see my vacuum video? It may not look like its sucking much up but the vacuum was full after a few parts.

I notice your shop-vac tube is sporting a wound that looks very like a Silver Fern... appropriate I suspect? Useful video of a neat machine! Thanks, Liked and Subscribed... Go Kiwi?!

Is there a repository for parts such as those clamps etc like thingiverse does for 3d printing?

I can’t remember exactly as it was I. The scrap bin, likely 6061, but possibly 5083.

1260mm ÷18000rpm = 0.07 chip load per tooth. For 4mm end mill single flute its much. Yes you have big cullet buttttt. And no burring??? What type of alouminium you use 6061??? Do you know the HRC of your bit?? 45 or 55???

About $4500 NZD. I did all the machining and fabrication myself though.

Hi can you advice endmill to cut as you do. Very nice. What brand? Size 1/8 right?

Try any Chinese single flute spiral 4mm or 6mm

Just curious as to why you didn't slot mill them...
@JeremyYoungDesign
@JeremyYoungDesign 6 лет назад
Hi, I'm not sure what you mean?? I used a 'slot mill' profile to rough the outer surface and then another profile as a finishing pass. I used a 2D adaptive clearing for the inner slot as it's the best way to remove material from a narrow pocket like that. Generally with slot milling it is tough to get a good finish, especially without coolant or high pressure air so I try to avoid it if I can.
@DodgyBrothersEngineering
@DodgyBrothersEngineering 6 лет назад
That looked like adaptive with a contour finish. Slot milling can be have finishing passes to clean it up as well. It's more of a spiral motion but in a slot. Starting at the inside and spiraling to the outside.
@JeremyYoungDesign
@JeremyYoungDesign 6 лет назад
Ahh ok, you mean the 'slot clearing' option within the 2D Adaptive tool path in F360. There was no particular reason why I didn't use that, I actually forgot about it, maybe something to look into for next time, thanks. Have you had good results with that? I usually consider 'slot milling' to be when you are taking a cut into material which is the same width as the cutter, like the outer roughing 2D profile I used in the video.

Check out the last couple of CNC videos on my channel. MC describes the action I do in those videos as slot milling. Other software might call a different action the same thing.

Hello, I just made my CNC and on my first test something does not seem right. The CNC uses 2.2 KW air cooled spindle at 300 Hz speed. and a Makita drill bit with one cutting teeth as you can see in the picture from the end of my video. Could you please explain why do I have that whistle noise when it cuts? Also the spindle motors is getting very hut, after the cut I could barely hold my hand on it? Cut federate is 800 . The diameter of the drill bit is 6mm. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dsRKRu3pHBw.html

When the CNC Machine is so damn RIGID. It will create a beautiful item. Sad thing. It will really cost a lot of money building or owning one unless it will be for major parts production. If it is for just a hobby. Not worth it.
