@@gerthalberg9735 yes, an infinitely large surface would be ideal. That way you only need to ever lift material and never have to move it in the X Y plane. It would also mean we only need one such machine on this planet :). Seriously though, if you can fit it in, a full sheet CNC router is the only choice.

make it rigid down low between the legs, put is on lockable, swivel castors of 2 or more inches diam

You usually string-line on the side so gravity isn't a factor. You also space the string-line out from the material by an equal amount on each end, that way you can see S-shape bends. Basically if the string-line is flat on the material the hump of a S-bend will hold it up and you won't see it.

Good luck with the build ! Tried bringing a 6 x 4 CNC Router frame to a 12 x 12 room for finishing and fitting out but it just stopped any kind of spontaneous work, so progress took a dive. Moved to larger outbuilding ....still working on it You could put that in a number of places given the layout of your shop, but access to feeding it 8ft material is one priority. Just back it up to the wall instead of the wood shelves? For a cheap frame rail straightener you could use ratchet straps to remove the bow while you weld diagonals or even wire rope and turnbuckles. KInda like Buckminster Fuller's "Tensegrity" Using compression and tension members achieve stiffness and in your case dialing in the bow where your linear rail is ultimately going. Or you are into the epoxy levelling debacle. There is but one other method, that of buying aluminum t-slot profile to and fasten to you rails and shim to spec. High tolerances, sophisticated and is great for mounting and adjusting linear rail with dial indicator From what I have learned so far, you will need far more mass (moment of inertia) to manage the simplest chatter-free aluminum machining. Smaller equals stiffer and therefore difficult on larger tables No matter how you proceed you need more support for the MDF, believe me. 12"o.c. Increase mass, stiffness, and reduce chances of standing waves that will make it sing! Consider filling your rectangular rails with epoxy sand. Keep in mind the weight of the gantry with a decent Z axis assembly and its acceleration with a 2,2kW spindle versus the mass of supporting frame Etc, etc We could talk for hours

I’ve looked everywhere for a smart way to level a workbench and haven’t found any useful one. But here I’ve found a perfect way in a cnc making video. Props to you !!

That is a very good sized table. I wouldn't be able to fig that in my shop. I need a cnc table for my everlast welder and wood router.

An interesting build I have built many (more than 10) of these with gradually improving results so will advise accordingly as you go LOL You certainly need to get it as flat as you can to start with far more important than a plasma table. However the machine will flatten its own waste board, the important reference is an even height to the table which that achieves. Timber will bend flat to the table within limits.

The final distance from the Z axis tool tip will be right on when you machine the top of the bed surface. Any changes in the height of the cutter will disappear after the surface of the Table top is machined the first time you use a sacrificial surface.

I went through this same process just last month. I also even used a fishing line to figure out flatness/bowing of my square tubes. Both rails had a vary slight bow, I turned the bow UP figuring that gravity and the weight of the gantry might bring it back to straight.

Yeah I was hoping the same thing but I turned mine bow down hoping that I could adjust the legs in the middle a little higher to adjust out the bow. However, that didn't work.

Bob, measuring local squareness at each corner with your little square (don't you farm boys have big framing squares? :) ), but for me, measuring the diagonals for equality is proves the pudding is edible. Another straight measure is 6 ft alu levels, which are quite famous for straightness, showing straightness over 6 feet, and then also when laid diagonally across a corners, levels the table. Poor cats, so many ways to skin them.

@@MakingStuffDon't measure from the rounded edge, but from the mid point of a tube, or the mid-point of the miter joint.

My first build was a grizzly metal mill conversion. I got a Avid CNC router . Table width is important this time, much of the sheet material I work with, come in five foot wide sheets. That extra foot represents big savings if you do much parts nesting. Anyway great job video documenting the experience. It is never wrong to build better ideas. :)

I didn't think it looked like you had room for it,but after you got it flipped over right side up it looks like you have plenty of room. You're right there with it. Is there plenty of room to load and unload a 4 x 8 sheet of whatever you are using?

This is great. We made one too, the same size but under engineered the Z plane and probably the other two axis and consequently our repeatability and accuracy is horrible. Clearly my mate and I need to redesign and build the gantry. How does one calculate how to make bits stiff enough without turning them into gravitational objects? Something about the mass of the router, height of support structure, material choices etc. No, we don't have or have the knowledge to use finite element analysis or other such hi techery, and our "feel" for such a large structure is just not there.

I've had pretty good luck with the Mesa 7i96 that I used on the plasma cutter. I think I am going to use one on this build too.

This is the first of your videos I've watched. How has this machine worked for you? About how many inches per minute will it do with a 1/4 mill with a 1/8 pass on plywood? I have a Maker made but want a gantry machine to make better cuts throughout the plywood sheet and to cut much faster.

I no longer have this machine. Had to find it a new home because we thought we were going to be moving to a new location, but that deal fell thru after the machine was sold.

You cannot get an accurate measurement with the tube supported on each end. This is normal deflection!! You can straighten the tube, but it is labor intensive.

There’s a formula for calculating the drop of a wire that’s of a specific size and under a specific load; instead of string I’m going to use fine stainless steel wire and pull it with a 30lb weight. Then I’m going to cook up a gizmo with a micrometer head and a LED that lights up when the micrometer spindle contacts the wire; allowing me to read the drop to less than a thousandth of an inch.

Build looking good. Is this just for wood or aluminium also ? If precision is needed I would not rely on steel tube alone as it is not accurate unless milled flat. To get around this you can epoxy the tops where the rails will go so not only they are flat but also flat in relation to each other. Looking forward to next episode. Take care

So many people start projects like this not understanding the part that Near-Absolute-Flat plays in the work that the router is going to do. If it’s out a few thousandths and you don’t have any adjustments the end product is consistently going to be ‘wonky’. And if you’re in it to make money…well…customers don’t buy ‘wonky’.

That's true, but for most DIY projects, signs, etc. you don't need +/-.0001 accuracy either.

No matter how tight you pull that string you cant measure that tight of a tolerance against gravity. The string will sag. Now if you turned the setup on its side and checked lateral then you would have a accurate measurement.

I was about to do a MPCNC then found it not rigid enough. I then was about to get a 3018 then found it wasn't either. Well, crud. I then see 3040 and 6040 can do Aluminum 6061 but really you need to remove the rods and go rails so dang it. What I need is a machine the size of a 3040/6040 that can do Aluminum that is about the price of a 3040.

Don't put too much effort into getting your frame perfectly flat. In the end its wasted effort. Close enough is good enough. You'll find you'll have to repeat the exercise again when you mount your linear bearings. Thats when it counts. I poured epoxy on my base frame to get a perfectly flat and level plane. That became the reference surface for the rest of my build. Following.

Scrap the router and get yourself a water cooled spindle. Them routers will blow your ear drums after a few hours. I know first hand as I made a CNC machine myself. Now cutting metal with em. Besides you get the R20 Collet for them small endmills.

It's not. That's why I used the adjustable feet and the laser to get the top of the machine level and in the same plane.

If you are using ball screws and linear rail be aware the holes in them and the bearing blocks may not be drilled the same from block to block, I had to redrill mounting holes oversized to get everything lined up. Sbirdranch documents this on one of his build videos. the holes are spaced right but they very on distance from center

does it really matter if the table frame has a slight bow as long as the linear bearings, rack and pinion, etc are straight and parallel? like you said, you can plane the plywood flat
