Finally, someone built something using wood from a big box store without putting it through a table saw to removed the rounded edges or through a thickness planer and it still looked great!! Nice job!

Thanks for the inspiration! I have now replaced my boyfriend's tiny, particleboard desk with this! I ended up flipping the L shape and extending it a foot. Thanks to your cut list it made things easy (now if only I had actually written my new number down instead of thinking I would remember it, I wouldn't have cut one board too short lol). The issues I had were mostly user error and thanks to my non-level garage. The only thing I would change if I could would be to plane the desktop. Even after tons of sanding (I had an orbital sander since I'm lazy) I still have smooth arches and valleys that aren't ideal. A word to those watching, this is taller than I expected. Even with the cut list, I didn't expect it to be an extra 5 inches taller than the old desk. I'm a fan since I find it more comfortable, but the bf is still having trouble adjusting.

Just finished making this table, my very first woodworking project! Thank you for the inspiration and the guidance. Here are my tips for anyone else who wants to make it: get a buddy to help with the pocket holes. If you don't have a work desk and 1,000 clamps, you'll need the extra set of hands to hold everything in place. The X beams in the legs were far and away the most difficult cut for me to get right and I had to sand them before they were glued in. Use 60 or 80, then 150, then 220 sand paper. Use a pre-stain treatment, it is worth it to get a very easy, very even stain with little to no effort. This was not a three day project for me, but it could be if you worked on it 12 hrs a day for three days, including correcting mistakes and dry time for the paint and pre-stain, stain and sealant. Over all, I am really, really pleased with what I made. I made the height specific to me and I extended the shorter side to make it fit my printer with plenty of extra space. Thanks again for the inspiration, instructions and cut list!

I love your design. I’m going to use it and modify it to accommodate 2 desktop computers. My husband and I like to game together and our space on one 4.5ft desk is just not working. Instead of 5ft length, I’ll be going with 8ft with a shelf underneath to keep the towers. I build lots of things with wood so I know I won’t have trouble. I just wanted to say it’s a great design. Simple and beautiful.

Thank you for sharing this project. It took me about 4 days (two coats of paint, two coats of stain). I changed the table a bit, I put the return on the right side to better fit my configuration in my room. The table came out great!!! Now I have to make 3 more for my sisters. Everyone loves the table. The electrical cup was a bit bigger than 3", so I had to get my dremel out to make the whole a little bigger-fits great now. I bought the kreg jig and a Rigid cordless palm sander. I had a lot of fun building this table. Covid-19 has given me some free time.

Built this desk in 2024 cost me about $140US in materials. Did it in a weekend. It's very solid and will last a long time. Opted to make the top with (6) 1x4x8's vs (4) 2x6x8's to reduce weight but still wound up being heavy. Although cost would go up, 1x4's could replace the 2x4's in the legs and supports to reduce weight even more while still being plenty sturdy.

Oh, no...IF I have to get pine for projects I've resorted to cutting my own 2x4s and 2x6s from 2x12s. Once I spent an hour digging through the stack looking for straight boards and when I couldn't find that I was willing to settle for straight-ish but after about another half hour of that I decided to look higher. I've learned that the straightest pieces are often the longest and widest. Pull out a couple of 2x12s or 2x14x16s....you'll be amazed. Of course you'll have to have them broken down to fit into a regular pickup but it's worth it. I only have a few more pine items to build and I'll be off pine for good. I have a pile of red oak singing me a song in my shop atm.

I just got a small saw for less than $50. Black Friday is coming up so get some tools then if you can. If not, you definitely don't need to buy giant ones like that. You just need to look around and check reviews

Just built one. Changed it up a little bit. Adding shelves to the bottom and possible adding a shelf attaching the longer portion. Thanks man.

Nice build ~ one thing it lacking: install adjustable feet or it will always rock and not sit level. You can make your own or just buy a set.

Nice Project. A curious question ... If you were designing a much larger computer desk, say 7'x7' L shaped, how would you go about making it detachable so it could be partly disassembled for moving, cleaning, etc, etc. That might make a good follow up project ......
@elgranmago1313
@elgranmago1313 4 года назад
You could probably just not add glue to the wood where you connect the two parts of the "L", and add more pocket holes there. And, if doing a longer table (making the short side of the desk in this project longer), you may need to add another support to the back of that piece (make 4 instead of the 3 he made and add to the back of the longer piece).

I used this idea and made myself a desk during the COVID-19 time - as we are forced to work from home. This desk, for the price, is so much better than anything you could get from a store. I did modify it a bit, to add depth, but wanted to thank you for the awesome idea!

If you wanted to swap sides with the "L" shape would anything change? Aprart from just doing everything on the right versus the left?
@vandogtrailer6701

I was looking at the same thing. The only 'switch' is that as you face the short desk section's crossed 1x2s, the vertical 2x4 support which goes against the wall will be on the right instead of the left (his version is on the left).
