This is really interesting to hear about! It's amazing how much detail you're able to put into the 3D model, allowing you to see exactly how each part of the structure will fit into the finished product. It looks like you've done a fantastic job of making the most of the space you have, opening up the main area as much as possible, and reserving as much space as possible for the most important areas without sacrificing too much on the smaller rooms.

Thanks! Yes the 3D model is a great tool for me in planning, prepping, etc. And yes: finding the balance between room sizes and spacing---all while not tearing so many walls down that it compromises the structure--was quite time consuming, but as always worth it and rewarding. Stay tuned-- the next episode is even MORE intense 😀

Think Outside The Container yes I’ve been good. Luckily this hasn’t been impacting my life too much as I was already doing online classes for my career. But I’ve been keeping up with all sides on this matter and am just ready for it to be over. My family is healthy and we are making plans to improve our own property 😊. It’s very cool seeing your journey and making the smart chose not to have a mortgage.

Think Outside The Container that part you had in there for a potential family was so cute! Lol And cool that there is future potential for expansion! I’m feeling optimistic about my future as well. I know that if I keep my eye on the mountain it will all be worth it!

4:55 I have a same idea to use sliding barn doors to save space..

Cool video. The closet area, in order to fit the barn door for the bathroom, could you just make one of the 3 doors a wall and just have two doors for the closet. There's something in the closet that looks like it's blocking the 3rd door anyways.
@thinkoutsidethecontainer
@thinkoutsidethecontainer 4 года назад
Hey yeah I could do that, but that's the clothes washing machine behind the closet door. So literally the front face of that machine should be accessible behind a sliding closet door for easy access to the machine. But otherwise I see what you're saying: then the area behind the added wall can just be like a standard nook on the side that many closets have. I suppose the washing machine could be moved to the other side of the closet....

@@thinkoutsidethecontainer ahhh, I see. Understood. Those barns doors just look so nice. As long as you get the functionality you need which would turn out to be the most important thing in a small home.

Yeah I totally agree on house nice barn doors look. The accordion doors were not my first choice, but again they'll get the job done 😉😀

Did the electrical/plumbing engineers explain why they needed the 2d rendering? (Just to make it look professional/CYA or an actual reason?) Thank you for the plans, especially with the conversion for the future -- like you and 90% of millennials, traditional home buying is way out of my teacher's salary, so this scratches a primal itch for "my space" and also not "in debt until 200 years after my funeral." I agree with your dad; that breezeway passage makes for a far less claustrophobic and more homelike interior.
@thinkoutsidethecontainer
@thinkoutsidethecontainer 4 года назад
Great question. He told me he needed architectural drawings, which he would use as the basis for filling in all the electrical/plumbing details. Otherwise he'd have to draw the home out himself in standard top-down 2d architectural style, which I'm sure he wasn't about to do for free. So yeah the Sketchup model came in very handy there. He needed it converted to Autocad I think mostly because that's what he's used to (and I'm sure it's the go-to program for many in the industry). And yeah if I can eliminate the lifetime mortgage I'll always consider an alternative to housing. That being said, building your own requires a lot of work and research, which is totally feasible in this internet age, and DEFINITELY extremely rewarding (at least for me, so far)

I downloaded your 3D plan and attempted to import the plan into Smartdraw but failed each time. What am I doing wrong? Please help. I understand Sketchup name got changed to Smartdraw.
@thinkoutsidethecontainer
@thinkoutsidethecontainer 4 года назад
Hi Douglas, as far as I am aware, SketchUp is still called SketchUp (maybe it's called something else in a different country?). As stated on the 3D model product page, it is a SketchUp model and thus meant to be used in SketchUp (and from there can also be converted to an AutoCad file). You can open the 3D model using the free or paid versions of SketchUp, again those links can be found on the product page where you purchased the 3D model. Hope that helps.

I realized that I got duped by Smartdraw and was able to bring it into Sketchup. How did you find the container template within Sketchup?
@thinkoutsidethecontainer
@thinkoutsidethecontainer 4 года назад
It's a 3D model available within, and provided by, SketchUp. It's quite accurate. And as always remember my overall 3D model of the whole container home is for reference and/or entertainment purposes. If you have any other questions, let me know! 👍

I’m in Florida as well but up in Citrus County starting my container home project! I really like your vids because it’s exactly what I’ve run into this far. I’m just beginning but watching what you went thru …I get it! I’m another note your dad is awesome! Haha my dad is the same. Always there to help you! I’m thinking I need that Sketch up program… I’m not good with computers really but I am a metal fabricator and have been doing this my whole life. The welding and fabricating part is east for me but that computer stuff…. I have a shop building custom cars and we do a lot of stuff that would pertain to container home ideas and creativity. I feel I’m good at that part. Haven’t finished watching all of yours but you should be really proud of this accomplishment
