DIY Copper Mug for Moscow Mule | Made from 3/4" Pipe!

All the cool kids are drinking Moscow Mules. But they’re supposed to be served in copper cups, which are expensive. Here’s how to make your own DIY copper cups with nothing more than 3/4 inch copper pipe. You can buy all of the materials for about $3 per cup from the hardware store, or find scrap metal and make them cheap or free.
I’ve never done any sort of copper or sheet metal fabrication so this is about what you can expect if you’re a beginner. Overall I’m happy with the results. The hardest part was learning to solder or “sweat” the parts together.
Our Moscow Mule recipe is 2oz vodka and 4oz ginger beer. These cups ended up about 7 ounces which are perfect.

helpful tip, heat the copper till it glows then quickly quench i in water till its cold. this will make it extremely malleable and easy to manipulate into your desired shape.

Just something to add- you could use copper sheet instead of splitting, flattening and soldering pipe into a sheet. You can also get copper solder instead of silver, so there's no visible solder.

Alright boss, your doing a good job soldering for not having any experience, ill give you a few tips, when soldering you should usually hold the torch on the metal instill its starts kind of smoking its way easier to do this with copper fittings and never put your solder in front of a blowtorch it will just clump up and fall of cheers!

where were you working. It looked like a big work shop. Oh and yes it did look like your soldering skills improved........ as you persevered. Job well done. solder is like magic when the metal is just hot enough & your flux starts to boil "poof" you touch the solder to the seam & it magically pulls it toward your torch & fills the seams. viola

Suzanne Dye That was the pole barn at work. It's a nice place to work, but it can be extremely frustrating because all of the tools are broken or missing. I always tell myself just to bring my own tools and never do. I know exactly what you mean by "magic." The solder almost sucks itself into place once the temperature gets right.

@MikeAndLaurenTV
@MikeAndLaurenTV 9 лет назад
MAD TICAL It's kind of hard to compare. I had about $20 bucks in supplies to make 8 of them. They sell for about $15 each online. But if you only made one, you could probably buy the little 2FT sections from home depot instead of the 10FT I bought. Then there is the size. My cups are 8oz but the ones online are 16-20oz. If it seems like work to go pound copper out in the garage for the afternoon, the savings of doing it yourself are not going to justify it.

Great vid! Hope that copper pipe was organic and grass-fed. Btw, do you change your own oil? It's a skill I've never learned, and just when I was ready to tackle it (w/ the help of RU-vid of course!), I discovered that the cost of me buying the oil & filter was MORE than just paying my repair shop. Perhaps you can do a video 1.) showing us how you do it on the Prius, and 2.) outlining the financial +/-...
@MikeAndLaurenTV
@MikeAndLaurenTV 9 лет назад
Kevin R. It wasn't certified organic, but it was free range from a local farm :) Yes, I usually change our oil, but I do agree the savings aren't substantial. I can pick up oil and a filter for $15-20 bucks at wal-mart. With a coupon an oil change is $20-30 bucks in my area. As far as simplicity, I think it's a great first step to working on your own car. It's literally a single bolt removed. There's probably a youtube video about your specific car. The thing with oil changes is that they are usually loss leaders for mechanic shops. They get you in for a cheap oil change and then up-charge you for everything else. For example, even easier than changing your oil is changing your air filter. One time we got our oil changed at a shop and they suggested replacing the air filter. They wanted $20 for the filter and $10 dollars to install. The I could buy the same filter for $7 dollars and install it in less than 20 seconds. That's what I would say is the benefit. You get exposure to a whole new world of DIY car maintenance. Once you've changed your oil, brakes, and maybe a starter or something you have a better idea of when it's worth paying a professional and when you don't mind doing it yourself.
@rutatutut
@rutatutut 9 лет назад
Mike and Lauren So true! I just recently changed my own engine air & cabin air filters. Bought 'em online, they show up on my doorstep, and I had them installed in 60 seconds. Saved 2 hours of my life and at least $45. Good stuff.
