How to make a copper box

Hand crafting a solid copper box for a 7th anniversary gift. I create a wide range of copper wares for kitchen, home decor and gifts. Please visit my etsy store at: etsy.com/shop/epthompson.
I use traditional techniques and tool to fashion my handmade items and every piece is custom made to order. I can stamp any message, date or name on the copper.
I use a stick of oak wood to form the copper, as it does not mark the copper as much as a hammer. The scissors are antique Wiss tin snips and the toolsI use to measure the copper are a marking gauge and proportional divider.
The beautiful music is by the talented Gillicuddy and came from freemusicarchive.org/music/gil.... Please support him at www.gillicuddy.com

Thank you . I remember back in the mid to late 60’s watching my grandfather do metal work , woodwork , upholstery , and do it all by hand with minimal hand tools . You brought back some great memories . Thanks dude , I needed that . .

Beautiful work sir ! Ironically I was searching how to achieve a nice crisp square corner in copper, as I'm building a garage door that's going on a very expensive super modern home. I keep coming back full circle to all the small crafts people, still practising their trade that's thousands of years old, most people thought black smiths became obsolete, heck no it's a higher art form, super high in demand, architects are artists too they go nuts for well designed, precision fit, all hand crafted. What the architects look for is flush, so a lightswitch cover for example has to be flush with the wall, other than that, use your imagination. Modern architecture is minimalist, that means flat planes with crisp square corners and straight lines. If you the craftsman can come up ideas for products that work within those parameters, you could build yourself quite the nice online business. Thank you very much for this tip, greatest time ever to start up a home business, highly recommend it!

Well done with nice clean bends. And since you asked, yes I do think some small brass rivets would add structural integrity and a bit more curb appeal to this lovely little eye catcher. Maybe some brass feet in the form of some suitably sized brass beads. Those were just some thoughts. I hope you don’t find me too forward.

Just thought of a product idea .... how about a copper recessed toilet paper holder , has to be inset into the wall, crisp square corner & straight lines , it also has to transition seamlessly into the drywall. Not a large item, you could ship that easily ! If you had a line of different bathroom products, I bet you would be very busy filling orders. It's no big investment, make one see if people like it, then make more based on the action you get.

Its called a marking gauge. You can find them in wood and metal or make your own. Amazon and good hardware should carry them.

How do I determine the softness or roughness of the file to use on copper ?
@maxartone1
@maxartone1 4 года назад
I use a very fine file. Rougher is for removing material quicker but need to be finisjed with a fine tooth file

@maxartone1

They are vintage wiss. A friend bought it at a estate sale and gave them to me. I cleaned them up and sharpened them. I love them. I use them every day. I did a quick Ebay search and this was the first result. www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-WISS-18-METAL-TIN-SNIPS-13-3-4-INLAID-CRUCIBLE-STEEL-HIGH-CARBON-SHEARS/391970878942?hash=item5b4348f5de:g:WAsAAOSwUg9abhc- If you search you should be able to find a good item. If need be to remove rust, soak in vinegar for a way and steel wool. Then sharpen the edge. Be careful sharpening that you don't create a gap between the jaws. I sharpen the bevel edge. Let me know if you have any more questions. Sharing information is what will keep the beautiful crafts alive.

And Wiss still make great shears. But I doubt they are as good as the vintage.

What thickness copper sheet did you use here? Thanks.
@maxartone1
@maxartone1 6 лет назад
Matt Wynn, 12oz. For larger boxes I use 16oz. Copper sheet is measured by ounces of weight per square foot

How much is the 16 oz sheet and were do you get it hobbie shops Dan in ohio
@maxartone1
@maxartone1 6 лет назад
I doubt your hobby shop will sell it. If not, check roofing supplies and commercial / industrial metal suppliers. there are also lots of places online that sell. Copper is not sold by gauge as most metals are. Its sold by weight per square foot. So 16oz copper means one foot weights 16 ounces. Copper prices change often, its currently about $7-8 per pound as of April, 2018 for copper sheet.
@SammytheBammy1
@SammytheBammy1 6 лет назад
Daniel: I went to a local roofing supply store and they wanted $16/sq ft for a 2x3 piece. I then found a local roofer and he sold it to me for $9.50 a sq ft. He even gave me for free a stick of solder, an extra sheet of copper that he couldn’t use and plenty of advice on how to work on my cupola weathervane (priceless).
