I wish I could do somwthing like this for my Dad but make it a handi shower with a bench and grab bars. He is 76 years old just had his fifth back operation and survived cancer three times. We have water damage on the subfloor in the kitchen . Its too much money right now and I really do not think I could something like myself. I am amazed at this kind of work.

What's it like cleaning the shower? Lots of pores to hold moisture
@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead 2 года назад
It’s really not bad. Theres cracks and crevices but it’s not porous. The paint I use is a high acrylic exterior paint that has “mold/mildew prohibitors”. Which I think has helped. Then every other day or so it gets sprayed down with 50/50 water vinegar mixture. And once every other week we do a quick scrub down with the water/vinegar and a soft bristle brush.

TRULY INSPIRING! Gotta say, too, that the extra touches in video production was great. (Like the text falling out of the bucket… very cool) A few years ago, we built an indoor shower that was made to look like an outdoor shower… we used more landscape construction rather than typical indoor methods. (Wish I could show you a picture… it’s pretty cool). Faux stone, river rocks… very “castle-esque”. Our budget was next to nothing, We went to Home Depot and discovered that a lame, plastic shower pan was $180… and I was like: NO WAY! We can do way better than a dumb square of plastic with a hole drilled in it. So we got started with left over supplies from various jobs and projects, repurposed lumber, etc. The end result is awesome. Before and since then, I have scoured the Internet for unique DIY ideas and could not find ANY that were as good or better than what we did. Not trying to pat myself on the back too much but everything was just various Home Depot inspired, boring crap. We have another shower to do and we wanted to improve on what we did before. It was pretty cool that our creation was better, in my opinion, than anything I was finding online but it was also discouraging because I felt like I was out of ideas. Yours is the first and only one I have found that truly got me inspired all over again. Absolutely stunning. I love it. CERTAINLY does not look like everything was purchased at Home Depot. Haha. AND it resembles a skill I have already practiced… I learned how to create large, naturalistic habitats for my reptiles that is basically expanding foam carved to look like real stone, then sealed with silicone and covered in sand, soil, coconut fiber, etc. This mine grotto shower is a much cooler, much sturdier variation of that theme so I feel like it’s something I could definitely pull off! Anyway, thank you so much for the awesome video and the truly unique inspiration. It’s exactly what I needed to spark my imagination once more and get to work!!

How has this held up? How easy is it to clean?
@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead 2 года назад
It’s held up pretty good. Cleaning has been rather easy and straightforward. Considering of course. About twice a week we spray it all down with 50/50 water/vinegar. Then every other week we spray and scrub it down with a soft bristle brush. It’s pretty clean as far as mold mildew and grime. However there is a soap residue (not scum) that we’re having a hard time with. It might just be from the specific soap we use. Dr Bronner’s. I’ve been hesitant on what cleaners to use because I don’t want to mess up the finish. But I think I’m going to start testing a few different ones and recolor if need be.

just found this video. amazing work! Is there any issues with water standing in the big gaps? would you grout the spaces just i case ? I would like to make something like this but i worry about the possible mold and cleaning issues. is it fairly easy to keep clean and maintained?
@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead Год назад
All the edges/gaps were shaped downward to allow drainage of excess water. The whole thing is essentially one big grout piece so I wouldn’t worry about it. Plus it’s sealed up with the paint and impregnating sealer. Speaking of paint; I use a high acrylic outdoor paint with mold prohibitors in it. I’m not sure what exactly is in the paint but it does help keep the growth of mold down. As far as maintenance and cleaning it is fairly easy… considering what it is anyway. It definitely takes more to clean then a normal shower. But. It’s not a normal shower. First thing to consider is a water softener. This will keep a lot of the calcium buildup from forming. Second we spray it down with a 50/50 mix of water/vinegar one or two times a week. Then, once or twice a month we scrub it down with an electric powered rotating soft bristle brush and more water/vinegar. It’s really not as difficult as some would think.

Would have been nice if there was more than a few lines of instructions in the video and, good God, what a choice to make. Next to no waterproofing, covering everything with cracks and texture which will make this a mold and mildew farm and be next to impossible to clear (unless you want to use harsh chemicals or a power washer on your finicky finish). While the construction is certainly unique, who wants to shower in a dark mine shaft? A 14-year-old who likes Minecraft? This just brought the resale value of your home down by $20-$30K. This is going to be torn down and redone in less than 5 years. Strongly advise checking out some basic design principles before constructing anything else.

@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! Well, I’ll say that it’s not an average shower so admittedly it does take longer than average to clean. That being said, it’s really not that bad. Two to three times a week we do a quick spray down with a 50/50 water/vinegar mix after we shower. Every other week we use the same mix and scrub it down with a powered/rotating medium bristle brush. We have a few different shaped heads that we can use to get in all the hard to reach areas. Then if needed, once or twice a year we’ll go in and use something a little stronger than the water/vinegar if there’s a lot of soap scum build up. It normally doesn’t get that bad though if we stay on it with the water/vinegar mix.

@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead 2 года назад
There’s no difference in technique or the mix used. You would literally and simply just scale it down. There’s a few different ways you could do that. Use plywood to build some 2x2 or 4x4 sample boards. Prep it the same way that you would if you were installing tile or an exterior wainscoting then start slinging the mortar on. Another way is to roll out some plastic and just make blobs of different shapes on it using the mortar then carve and shape them to mimic stone or wood.

As the person in my home that does the house cleaning all I see is a cleaning nightmare. I would think this far better suited for an outdoor pool area for prerinse and after swim rinse.
@TheHiddenHomestead

It’s not that bad actually. Once a week we spray it down with vinegar then every other week while in the shower we scrub it down with vinegar and a soft bristle brush and rinse. Is it more then a normal shower? Sure. But it’s not a normal shower so we’re ok with it.

Two questions... 1) What did you use over the PVC liner and how did you fasten it down to keep it from moving? 2) How did you get your concrete to stick to the foam and not lift off?
@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead Год назад
After the liner went down I used the same mix design that I used for the rest of the shower, which was my mix I created for vertical concrete. All I did with the liner was staple the very top edge and glued the seams (as recommended by the factory) to keep it all in place. Again, I used my vertical concrete mix design to cover everything. It’s made specifically for vertical surfaces so it’s pretty sticky and will hold to a lot of different surfaces as long as it’s not built out to much. What I mean by that is, the more it’s built out the heavier it will get. Even though it’s a sticky mix, gravity will eventually win.
@paramax55
@paramax55 Год назад
@@TheHiddenHomestead In the video, it looked like you had put down some cement board or something over the liner. It could just be a visual illusion. It doesn't try to shift/move without something like lathe or cement board to hold it in place?
@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead Год назад
@@paramax55 oh yes. The cement board was placed on the walls which overlaid the liner. Of course, no screws securing the cement board was installed below the liners edge. The other thing that could have helped secure the liner was the drain itself, but there was no glue or mechanical means to secure the liner in place. Once in place, it will maintain its shape for the most part until you pour the concrete bed on top of it.

@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead 6 месяцев назад
It’s a special mortar that I make specifically for vertical applications. There’s a lot of pre-bagged mixes out there to choose from but this one is definitely more economical. I am in the process of making a full online course that goes over all of it. For now though, if you’re interested I have a link to the ingredients, and the how/why of the mix pinned to the top of the comments section. Admittedly, it’s on my Patreon channel so it does require payment for access to get all the information.

Awesome job. So how hard is it to keep clean from mold and soap scum with all them really deep grooves, cuts and what not? I know you sealed it at first but have you had to since?
@TheHiddenHomestead
@TheHiddenHomestead 3 года назад
I’m probably gonna apply a second coat of sealer again here soon. It’s almost been a year so it’s about time. Just to keep everything clean and fresh. As far as mold and soap scum: we haven’t noticed any mold but a little soap scum down in the corners of the floor. Which admittedly is expected considering we’ve been pretty lazy in cleaning it for the last few months. Normally though we spend about 5 minutes a week on cleaning it which how we do it isn’t much at all. Usually after every other shower we just do a quick spray with a 50/50 water/vinegar mix. Then once or every other week I do a quick spray and scrub down with a soft brush while I’m already in the shower soaking. On top of that the paint is intended for exterior use and claims that it’s mold and mildew resistant... and I believe it.
