Does the lacquer you put on the coasters protect it from hot things? Or are they to be used for cold drinks.
@WoodenThingsAndStuff
@WoodenThingsAndStuff 4 года назад
For the amount of heat that comes through a coffee cup, it's okay. I wouldn't use it on something like a trivet that's for pans that come off a stove or something, though. Most of the time I would go with something more "refreshable" rather than something that will need stripping and refinishing eventually, but I was in a hurry on this batch, so I went with the fastest-drying thing I had on hand so I could get multiple coats done.

I thought Howard's Feed-N-Wax was not food safe? At least that's what the Howard's website says.
@WoodenThingsAndStuff
@WoodenThingsAndStuff 3 года назад
Everyone has to make their own decisions on what is safe enough for them. I personally wouldn't DRINK any wood finish, but I don't think you could ever consume enough of it from having it buffed into the wood and then resting against the surface of your food after it's cured.

it's a great video and I was really looking forward to your explanation but the background music messed it up for me. I really wanted to know the ideal thicknsse for these boards? thank you for the share
@WoodenThingsAndStuff
@WoodenThingsAndStuff 2 года назад
I wouldn't say there's an "ideal" thickness. I start with 4/4 (1") rough stock and plane it until it's flat, so they generally end up between 3/4" and 7/8" or so, but I've made them as thin as 5/8" when I've had very twisted wood to start with and they're fine.

Are you using 3/4 inch thick boards? Do you think 1/2” would work? Great work!
@WoodenThingsAndStuff
@WoodenThingsAndStuff 4 года назад
I start with inch-thick boards and they come out at about 3/4" when they're done. I probably wouldn't start with 1/2" boards, because they would end up too thin and prone to warping, I think, but if the finished thickness was 1/2", you'd probably be okay. But it's really hard to say, because every piece of wood is different and you can never really tell what it's going to do over time.
