DIY Hobie Pro Angler Trolley

This is too big a kayak to not have a trolley. And I'm too cheap a guy not to make my own!
I reused the cart I already had for my poor man's fishing kayak and now I have one unit that will service both kayaks! And considering that I had all the materials around the house, this 'new' cart didn't cost me a dime.

I like your idea of the wheels in the back. You did a great job. I know this Hobie of yours is long gone but your still helping people that are just getting the Pro Angler. Thanks

Think it's awsome that you are not afraid to drill in this nice new boat. So many people discourage the drilling, but your like a rebel.

I totally appreciate people that know how to do things for themselves as I am the same way. I'm going to put mine on the back too when I get my new 2016 PA 14 next week. I think I'll try to weld my fence poles to the existing handle bar. BTW, you might want to consider sealing the wood that you installed because it's not going to last long before it starts to rot out. Good luck.

Brilliant. I found the same problem with my ascend 128. I can get the wheels under it easy enough at the vehicle when unloading and even at the water I can pick up the end and they drop out, but it's getting them back in at the end after all the paddling that is the real pain. I may have to look at doing something like this after I move and have the garage space for projects.Great video Marty.

AWESOME! AWESOME!! AWESOME!!! Love your "Poor Man" series of videos. I love making my one gear just because there is something about making something with my hands... And saving money. Nice Shop/Garage. I need to make a better kayak cart, but so far my PVC junker works... but for how long... Keep this coming!!! Again... videos like these keep cable away and my projects list growing :)

Nice job! Very inventive. One thing, though: why don't you turn the trolley upside-down and stick it back in the scupper pipes? That way they're stored and out of the way!

I don't know why I didn't think of that! I will store the wheels there from now on :^)

Your ingenuity is inspiring. I've no idea how you'd fit one, but a pivoting single dolly wheel at the front would be great for easing the weight on your arms. It's another thing to attach, un-attach, carry etc though, so perhaps the extra workout each trip is the preferable option. Another informative and entertaining video. Thank you, I love watching these.

That is pretty good ingenuity. One advantage of the stock mid trolley location is you just basically balance it, vs holding up half the weight. Still much better than nothing.

Nice work around. The prangler is heavy no two ways about it. I pondered doing something like this, but I stuck with a modified scupper cart setup. The carrying all +/-120lbs. over long distances didn't appeal to me, at all. But seeing this has gotten me interested in maybe setting up a rig to have this as an option along with the scupper holes. Thanx for posting. Your ideas are always helping me think about ways I can improve my kayak experiences.

improvising is fun! Now you got a neat place to mount a steering oar or rudder for when you add a sail. Glad to see you using fence post. I rarely see anyone using metal in DIY. The metal conduit and fence post is the cheapest and strongest material you can get at the hardware store but it rarely gets used in DIY projects online, everybody seems to use PVC.. I was surprised though the wood was not painted orange. :)

Great job there! Loved how you fabbed the old trolly to work with stuff you had just laying around. The wheels on the back of the yak is a great idea. I curse everytime I have to roll my kayak over to insert the trolly. It's easier to remove, I just roll it out into the water until its deep enough to pull them down and out. Now replacing it in the water is a royal pain because the wheels float. There at the end of the video you were scooting right along. Do you miss paddling? Kudo points for the old school head phones! LOL Thanks for another great video!
@Fitter562lu
@Fitter562lu 10 лет назад
the cool part is that you didn't change the trolley so you can use it on the old tried and true yak, and the new one. And I agree the old fence pipes are going to rust pretty quick. But i guess you use what you have available.

I have a couple friends with this kayak and they refuse to take it out by themselves if they can't load it at a boat ramp right off their trailer. This is by far the best video out there for kayak trolleys. That being said, I was wondering if you would be able to do a mounted trolley video. something like wheels on outrigger s that filled both roles. I am asking because my scupper holes are also close towards the middle of my kayak. thanks for the read

Dude your ideas are pretty freakin awesome. I wish i could push myself to drill into mine but im not 100% sure on a certain idea. Ive tried a few different models of dolleys and im not really happy with any of them. Your idea looks great with the wheels being at the back, im just not sure how to accommodate with a predator 13 with a rudder.

Umm ... a constructive idea .... I would have attached the Back wheel to the Back Handle with a simple half circle metal piece on top of the hold weel pipes .... a simple attachement would have zero screws into the yak ... and way less trouble ...

Apparently my back is made of glass,i am waiting on multiple operations to fit 10 metal plates on my spin and facet joints and 2 plates in my neck.last year i had bilateral Pneumonia and this year i have Graves Disease which makes me weak .iv still to find a super easy way for me to load a kayak ...i would love a kayak trailer with a hobie that's easy to load ,but in Norway you are talking 10k dollars plus for a set up like this ..I almost gave up kayak fishing last year because i wasnt able to get back on the kayak after a deliberate flip. I really dont want to give it up because i love fishing and Kayaking is fantastic exercise.. Fingers crossed by the end of this month i will know for sure about the operations and timescale for recovery ..:)

Rust & rot will take care of that mount. Leaks from all the screw holes in the bottom you drilled.

Marty! nooooo that fence post is going to rust and its going to be a mess!! i would have used simple pvc or aluminum but aluminum in that thickness would be alot harder to find and make sure you seal those holes!!!
@ihikefar
@ihikefar 10 лет назад
That's an excellent point Henry.
@WynneEden
@WynneEden 10 лет назад
I had the same reaction that Henry did - PVC or Aluminum will last a lot longer than galvanized steel. If you can find some scrap "eTrex" (PVC board) to use instead of the plywood, that would last longer too. Couple of things: can you reach that area to use bolts instead of screws? That would let you use rubber washers or silicon to seal your connectors. second, could you have made the "teeth" on it longer and not had to use brackets? (sorry, your board reminds me of kid's vampire fangs)

why not put the trolley upside down in the mount and put a key trough the tubing to keep it locked in place - you sure wouldn't want to lost it if you tipped upside down or got hit by a BIG wave.

oh yeah I tried building one with pvc pipe ...not a good outcome because the scuppers in my yak are so small ..small thick pvc pipe didnt hold up well to a 150 pounds of yak and gear when I hit a bump they broke off (not good) scared me to think of it possibly damaging my yak. So I went with a simple treated lumber dollie design.
