DIY: How to Fix Sinking Chair (In under 5 minutes!)

Today we take a look at how to fix a sinking computer or office chair in just under 5 minutes!
This can be done with just a couple of quick tools, and costs around $30 for a new hydraulic piston, and can easily be done by anyone.

Great video, but to be clear, you have to replace the part to fix it, you can't fix the hydraulic without a replacement?

even faster fix buy an insert coupling and slip it on over the wheel takes a couple minutes and only costs 60 cents

*YOU DO NOT, want to hold the cylinder with one hand, while pounding with a hammer. YOU WANT TO, sit the unit inside a 5 gallon bucket, suspended by the wheel base on the top of the bucket and EASIY pound with he hammer and there. EZ!*

Great video man, I was wondering are the cylinders a one size fits all per say? Or do they come in various sizes?

They’re typically universal unless you have some specialty chair, but all of these gaming chairs have the same style base. The only thing that changes is the force of the piston. I believe the one I used is meant for 200 or so pounds. I’d have to pull up the listing and look at the specs.

The bearing clip would only allow the inner piston to be removed and not the full cylinder. I don't believe I've ever seen just a replacement inner piston for sale, but I haven't ever looked too much in to it.

OR you can buy a pipe for plumping and put it underneath and it will never come down.

I mean... That's also an option, but it doesn't let you use one of the key features of an office chair.

It's a rather standard chair by "Top Gamer", which doesn't appear to really be around anymore, but there are plenty of identical chairs with different brands. That's a good question actually. It's just referenced as a Shaft Collar in all of the documentation for the tool. I'd likely go with "Piston Removal Tool" or something like that.

It does not, those are purchased separately. I didn't care for the rollerblade style wheels on carpet. They do far better on hard flooring.

Unless a local store sells it for you, you're likely looking at Amazon, which is usually 2 business days. It’s a universal kit. Fortunately the pistons are standardized and should always be the same size.

Does it matter what hydraulic thing it is or no

You can pick up any universal hydraulic support and it’ll fit, as these chairs use the industry standard size. I would recommend finding one that supports at least 20% above your body weight though when shopping. The one in the description I believe was good for 400 pounds, but I don’t remember.

The problem with my chair is that the cylinder will literally slide through the hole where the wheels are attatched. I've already bought a new piston but that didn't help. I'm thinking I might have to buy a new base for the wheels. One that's smaller.

That definitely sounds like a defective base. If you reach out to the manufacturer they should be able to send you a new one (more likely than not they'll send a whole new chair).

My problem rn is that the cushion itself is sinking not the cylindrical part. Any ideas?

If the seat pad is sinking/flattening out on you the best recommendation I would have would be a seat cushion. The Purple Seat Cushion was a life saver for me with my office chairs at work. I used the Purple Royal and now use it in my car since I no longer do an office job: amzn.to/33i1jVj

I swear for a moment I thought I was being haunted. 5 seconds ago, I had just adjusted the chair's height to it's maximum level and then 2 seconds later it starts to sink. I immediately looked back and nothing was there. Then I researched sinking chairs and thought how dumb I was.

Fix chair in five minutes, you only need several tools several people won't have, custom parts ordered online, a work area and more! Dude you made this video out to be far, far more simple than it actually is. Your title implies this is some easy DIY household fix anyone can do, instead what you've done is point out the obvious option most know about but were trying to avoid. But hey, that's YT clickbait at its finest. Hope the views were worth it dude.

Part of DIY is doing it yourself. Normally if a chair has a sinking piston you have one of three options: Buy a new chair, take it to a place that can fix it ($$$), or put a hard object in it to stop it from moving, which removes functionality of the chair. Buying the part required to fix it (which comes with the necessary tool to remove the old piston) is still very much in the realm of DIY and isn't clickbait. Now the "In under 5 minutes!" you could argue fairly that it is clickbaity, but it really does only take 5 minutes to do it if you're familiar with the process.

Everything you need to do it is able to be ordered in a kit from Amazon. Short of maybe a hammer to help dislodge the piston, that is.

If the chair is only 4 months old I would recommend reaching out to the manufacturer for a replacement. As for fixing it, the only fix is a replacement hydraulic cylinder.

@@JoeMartinMVC Negative! I wedged two dry wall nails inside the top washer to the metal. Fixed it for free.You can fix about anything with engineering

I mean… it fixes the issue by replacing the failing part. Technically you could try to prolong your old cylinder using tape around the shaft of your old cylinder, but with the failing seals it’ll eventually need to be replaced. The tools necessary to just replace the seals without damaging them aren’t things people just have laying around usually.

For some that may be a good first step, but these pistons are supposed to be able to support up to 400-600 pounds.

Sometimes fixing requires replacing failed components. Just like if your alternator failed in your car and you took it to a mechanic to get it fixed, their fix is to replace the failed component.
