My Stepdaughter has just moved into her new house and has asked me to put vinyl floor in the kitchen and bathroom for her.... this is one of the best videos i have seen
Whoever put this out there, thank you for taking the time to do it. I appreciated that you used a hand trimmer rather than some fancy tool to cut the vinyl. I got the whole process. Cheers from Western Australia.
phew...love her...not yapping non stop ..she just gives clear, precise, tuition...so many blokes like the sound og their own voice and just wanna talk and talk..
First class information. I've watched other videos, but they seem to skip the bit where the vinyl gets trimmed to fit. The tip with the steel edge and craft knife really helped. Thank you 😊
I just finished laying my bathroom floor, starting with very little confidence and finishing amazed at how well it turned out. I am so grateful for this video, thank you so much!
thank you SO much for this video, I laid vinyl in the loo today and was clueless on finishing techniques. I live on my own and previously stuffed up with similar job, so you have helped me finish up with a professional touch. Much appreciated.
Not sure how OP's comment was femenistic. I saw it as a woman appreciating another woman making a decent video about something that until a few years ago was considered out of their capability by small-minded people such as yourselves.
I am so glad to have watched this video demo. I was going to spend all the time to cut out and remove the old flooring, but after watching this I'll just leave it in place and lay the new over the old. That alone will save me a couple of hours. Thank you soooo much and I wish you all the best! :)
Thank you so much. I am so afraid of removing the toilet like so many others suggest. Also nice to see a woman doing it . Now I feel confident I can do it too. Cheers from Canada.
As a floor layer who is a vinyl specialist. Use a hooked blade and/or concave. They are much easier to control whilst cutting in against the skirt or loo.
Got a thin length of wood. Put double sided tape on the wood. Lay the wood next to the wall and push you vinyl onto it. Lift vinyl and cut. The perfect line. Triangle bit of wood for the corners and nice and easy to cut corners and edges and nice fitting floor 😊
I boarded out my bathroom floor to level it and then laid lino over it. I came back to your video a few times for words of wisdom. Cutting in around the toilet and basin was nerve wracking but do-able and it looks good. Thanks
Having painted the skirting boards, I wondered if I'd cut through, your tip for offcut has given me confidence. I echo what others have said, as a lone woman, this is a great confidence giver. Back to measuring before I get it in there. It's a tiny room, and lots of obstacles. 😬 thank you, I've subscribed !
this example was hands down in the top 5 of the easiest vinyl flooring installation. even though there were steps taken that wasn't needed I can even appreciate them because it goes to show us amateurs that it can be done (not that she's an amateur).
MGT, You are spot on. Some very insecure male DIYers out there. I'm about to install a floor and find her presentation very useful - all clearly explained and easy to grasp. Well done Philippa Tuttiett, your tips have helped me.
Having been in construction no less than 50 years, I can say that I learn something new every time I spend a half hour watching videos, or on the job. There are always more than a couple of ways to do any job. I am sure the woman laying lino in that bathroom learned a thing or two from her direct experience, and from the comments.
Philippa (and All), Howdy! Well, I did get the ol' bathroom floor covered with lino as per your instructional video. I started it and finished it just yesterday (June 28th, in the Yeare of Somebody's Lord 2018). I originally wrote that I was to start this job on June 24th or so, but I decided I had to do a bit of wood repair and sanding before applying the lino, so yesterday was the day for the flooring. Despite this being my first time doing this, the job ended-up having gone very, very well. This, naturally, surprised me as I'd never done it before, and even with great instructions (like yours), some things take a bit of practice. I really felt I was in over my head, but the job had to be done. Immediately before walking myself and the lino into the bathroom I sat my sorry self down in front of the computer, and watch this video one more time. I had already watched it enough to have all the techniques memorized, but I just needed to hear it from you one more time before I faced my bathroom destiny. (laughing... at me). I needed the reassurance.(ha) I forced myself to stay calm even when I felt I should not have attempted this job, and just took one step at a time, following the methods you showed us. Suddenly the lino began falling into place and laying flat and making me very happy! see---> #;^\ grrr! i'm very happy. grrr! It was like a miracle to me! And I sure had some very kind thoughts of you at that moment. From that point onward I had more room to move around to get the job done, and things continued to go well. After the precision cuts were finished, and all looked pretty darn good, I rolled my computer chair to the bathroom doorway, and with a glass on water in my hand, I just sat there a while looking at how great things went. Boy, was I glad that job was over. Beginner's nerves (and lack of experience). Last night I went to sleep for the first time in a month without worrying about what job I would be tackling in the olde bathroom on the morrow. Today... I am one happy boy! see---> #;^\ grrr. i'm one happy boy. grrr. Philippa, if not for your video I do not think I would have attempted to lay lino flooring. Each time I watched this video I kept thinking, "Maybe I can do this". Finally, I said, "Oh, well... let's just give this thing a go!". I am happy the job is done. And I am happy the job is done correctly. I thank you very much again, Philippa. You are groovy. # :^) And you are very skilled, knowledgeable, witty, and nice. You are appreciated, my friend. If it seems I have written too much, well, it is because laying the lino was the last part of re-doing the entire bathroom, including some sub-flooring repairs, mold removal, a bit of plumbing, painting, etc. (most of which I also didn't know anything about prior to this project), so I was getting a'might tired fumbling around with these unfamiliar jobs and getting it done. All the while I knew the last step was going to be laying the lino. And, I dreaded that part of the job, too. Thanks (again) to you, I got through that very last part of this big project, and it was done correctly, and the bathroom looks great now. I would say that I am proud of myself, but, alas, I am way too humble to say that. However, I can say that you are the best, Philippa. And I am indebted to you for your kindness in sharing your knowledge to help so many others like me... and even me. And for helping to give us enough confidence to tackle these jobs. Bless your heart. Philippa, be well... you're swell. Best Wishes Always & The Best Life Has To Offer You. Most Sincerely, Wombat Willie (who can now lay lino flooring thanks to one special woman)
very helpful - fitted it myself after watching your video - so free fitting and i got free rhino lino from the back of a carpet shop and did my cupboard under the stairs and airing cupboard - thank you
Absolutely brilliant video!! I’m a women alone and I’m having to do my home with vinyl this week... I was panicking about my bathroom! Now I’m not! Thank you so much!
Me too but a utility room! We need to start lady diy groups where we can just get a second pair of hands for an hour when we need to lift heavy stuff. I had to lift a cupboard and was quoted 90 quid to 150 quid just to get a guy to move one cupboard for me ..as it turned out i was able to drag it on an old rug which was a greay suggwstion. I had to get help from a neighbour to put the top back up..i could take it down but not hoist it back up...but managed to find a neighbour walking past and got him for three minutes to give me and hand and made him a cup of tea and some biccies. I dont know if ill bother putting it back when the lino is down. Then i have to move the sink and plumb it in and cut a worktop and somehow make that atatched to the wall because underneath is just the washing machine. Sigh. That will definitely need a helping hand or just some company and encouragement would do me to be honest. Its the standing there not sure of yourself and worrying about how to do it that takes the most time ..if somone else was there i couldnt piddle about so much overthinking it all. My back is killing me though after movibg the cupboard.
1st time I have ever laid vinyl flooring and I found this tutorial a great help.. mine didn't turn out as neat as her's did but I'm very pleased with myself.. brill video.
Love your video! Not just because you are a women but because you are very engaging I love how you are very to them point and explain it in a simple terms. I have some Lino that my sister gave me months ago but been too scared to lay it lol but after your video I’m definitely going to do it this weekend! Great Chanel - just subscribed 👌
Excellent thank u I will be laying my bathroom vinyl next weekend and cannot wait as I always decorate my bathroom but when installing the last vinyl my daughter had thrown away the old one hence had no template to work with so had to lay without no knowledge. But with your expertise guidance I feel confident to lay vinyl flooring in a bathroom with knowledge of how to shape the sink and pedestal.
This is great. Very clear, very comprehensive, very well presented. Found this very helpful and stood me in good stead for laying lino for the first time. Thank you!
My hat is off for taking on flooring. I have done many hundreds of these. She did good for a home owner. Next time remove the toilet. A good sharp hook blade is a very useful tool as well.
Excellent video! Very concise, full of helpful tips like where to start from and where to end. This time round I have done an excellent job compared to the job I did 6 years ago no mess with the sealant! lol!
A job well done with good exclamations throughout your video. Don't pay any mind to all the dislikes don't quite know what their problems are...... maybe your job shouldn't of been so perfect.
Well done and thank you! I do wish people would shut up about popping the pins out of hinges rather than removing the hinge. The pins NEVER come out easy and NEVER go back easy. I also wonder why so many "experts" are watching a tutorial video!!
If you're a midget or female, I imagine popping the pins out would be difficult. I've never had a problem with it, and it's far easier to mount the door back in place with hinges that are ALREADY INSTALLED for proper alignment than risking taking the hinges out and having issues stripping screw heads or screw holes.
@@yourlogicalnightmare1014 Not all hinges have removable pins. Only the front door in my house does. I do understand that some people struggle using a screwdriver.
I have been thinking about doing this myself but I worried about cutting around the toilet and also I cant cut straight for the life of me. I love this video and the lady explains everything in a way that is easy to understand. She certainly makes it look very easy and I dont suppose it will be that way for me but I shall watch this a few more times than try and lay the flooring myself.
@@guybarber2301unbolting a toilet can lead to a lot of other problems some of them are only sealed because of the dirt lol. Id say cut around it nobody is going to be looking under the toilet to notice.
Excellent video. Going to purchase my vinyl this weekend for my bathroom. Your video definitely provided the instructions to give me better confidence. Thanks!
Great video explained and demonstrated expertly. Thanks, I feel more about confident about tackling my bathroom floor now! At least the bath panel is already off...it came to bits a few years ago.
Glad I found you, been looking every where for some one like you to give a such clear explanation on how to put new vynil on too the old one, thanks for teaching me,you are a great teacher,I helping a friend next week to put new floor on her kitchen and I am so glad I found you
Tip on removing a door if you don't want to work around it: Tap the hinge pins out and take the door off. No need to worry about screwing hinges back on and things not lining up afterward. I wish I'd watched this before trimming up my vinyl to go around corners and stuff. It ended up a total mess near the door. I can't take my bathtub up or move stuff there. I'm fortunate that my toilet isn't in yet and I used a template to cut the hole in the middle without cutting down the back to have a seam. Do you have any tips on how to install new vinyl where it transitions to carpet that is already in place? My old linoleum tucked under the carpet.
This woman is no nice, so patient. Pretty sure I still can’t do this myself; but, really happy to see a girl doing it😊…I may still give it a-go myself!
Excellent, clear video! Hate laying lino because it feels like one little mistake and the whole lot is ruined - that's why I never go near it. Might try it again now thanks. :)
Philippa, thank you for this great video. I have this very job to do to finish-up a big bathroom project. And boy, am I looking forward to finishing-up this big bathroom project. I wasn't sure that the vinyl could be folded so much without cracking, but I now know that the vinyl is very flexible, and I will not have to remove the vanity and toilet to get the new vinyl right up to (and even under the edge) of them. You were right to the point, while still being very clear in your instructions. And the video shows us exactly how to do what you are instructing us to do. Outstanding job on the vinyl flooring, and in showing me how I can do the same. The reading on my stress meter has dropped to about zero now. (laughing... at me) Tomorrow that job WILL be finished! Again... thanks a million, Philippa! You are much appreciated! ~wombat willie #:^)
@@luannalovell she doesn't have a husband pretty sure she's married to herself so... If herself counts as her wife. Theres no need to imagine as they're both hard at work I guess?
Wow, you really psycho-analyzed the shit out of those "insecure white males" over RU-vid's comment's section. You must be sooooo edgy, sooooo witty and sooooo punk rock.
I'm converting my van into a campervan and have been very disappointed to discover just how nasty men can be when faced with a handy woman. There are very very few men who do not take it personally that a woman can do thing they cannot. Very sad.
I'm a woman doing up her van and I can confirm that the vast majority of men are quite nasty towards a woman who is capable of doing manual jobs. Quite a shock but true.
BohemiVan+ As a man I have to say I am puzzled and saddened by that. Just think how much fun a couple could have doing this kind of work together! Team work is tremendously satisfying and can strengthen the bond between people who participate.
Great video, and excellent tips. The only thing I would suggest to do differently is to remove the toilet before the installation. That way the vinyl is under the toilet, right up to the ring, and there will be no issues in the future if you ever have to change your toilet and the footprint is different than the contour of the installed toilet.
Being that some people can't remove their toilets unless you're wanting to remodel your entire bathroom. This to me is a better idea to lay around the toilet. I have been putting off wanting to lay the flooring in my bathroom for over a year now cause I am dreading going around my toilet and how I would go about doing that. Being that I cannot remove my toilet (nor do I want to cause it's too much work for me) I will try doing this, this weekend...
You have really made it look so easy and encouraged me that I can do it too by myself as I’m a mum that loves diy as much as possible. It’s going to save me a lot of money now. Thank you very much. I have a question though if you don’t mind. If I’ve had vinyl flooring with edging strips around, should I take them all off before putting the new flooring? And will it be easy to do it? Thank you.
WoW! I've been reading so many comments, and I dare not tell anyone what that floor job will look like in 6 months.😢 She did such a great job putting it down. I enjoyed watching her. But... Without floor adhesive applied to the back of that vinyl. It will wrinkle then crease flat when you step on it over and over, then crack and tear. Don't get any water in that tear. This could all happen fast in a day or 2. And your vinyl covering is gone. 😞 Good luck to everyone. 🇺🇸
Nice video but... try using a knife with a concave blade to cut, rather than scissors. Also try leaving about 2 inches spare up each wall, then pull back halfway and glue, as you'll find it easier to cut off an inch or so rather than a tiny piece and the vinyl won't move as you're cutting.
Ive just come across this video as Im about to lay some vinyl.....Can I say I am super impressed with the approach this handywoman has used to do this job (not because I consider it as a woman doing a mans job....which is far from my thoughts...rather, it is a fairly common sense approach irrespective of gender)....very well done
I laid down vinyl flooring in my dad's bathroom, and when I wanted to do it the way she does it in the video, my elderly father yelled at me and told me to measure everything first. I did, and the measurements were way off. It was a nightmare to deal with vinyl flooring even for such a small bathroom. There wasn't enough flooring in some spots, and too much in the other spots, and there was no wiggle room. Next project is vinyl flooring for the kitchen, but this time I'm doing the vinyl tiles instead of the roll of vinyl. It's easier to deal with. Though the kitchen would be easier to do with a big sheet of vinyl flooring and I don't have the obstacles that a bathroom has, my dad insists on the tiles since I 'can't measure worth a damn'. SMH
@Jonas Sandoy If you're going to do something like that you may as well go to the dollar store and grab some wrapping paper and use that... Seems like a waste of time honestly- i've never seen a flooring person do this at all. If you do see one do this you should fire them probably. My uncle did flooring since before I was born and did it about like she was doing it- he'd unroll the carpet or tile and start cutting.
@Jonas Sandoy I found something called contractor's paper at a DIY store. I'm going to buy a few rolls next time I do any flooring. It's very wide, so it'll be easier to make a pattern. Nice thing is, that pattern can be saved for future flooring projects to be done in the same room.
The use of a curved back linoleum knife saves a ton of time as you can use the curved back to push (break backing) vinyl into corners, along baseboard/wall, make rough cuts and make your cutting line exact. Interesting this vinyl only needs the double stick tape on the edges? Maybe because it’s such a small area? Always remove the toilet which makes the seal watertight when toilet is reinstalled. If not removing toilet, leave a 1/4” extra around toilet base and push vinyl under toilet base with linoleum knife. Seal with caulking. Since the vinyl is cut! There needs to be double stick tape for the seam behind toilet and then seal seam with clear glue so any water leakage from supply valve/hose or tank, won’t get under vinyl and cause rotting of floor. I normally use vinyl adhesive instead of tape but that’s a personal preference. It’s a thumbs up 👍🏻 for this video!
What an excellent tutorial video? Sooooo much better than any I have seen produced by men and with several great tips. I think it takes a woman to get these jobs done to perfection. I will be fitting lino into my van tomorrow so thanks for this video.
The one thing I don't understand is, why wouldn't you remove the old linoleum underneath? I SO am not a handywoman or contractor, just a person with a humble question.
@@tricia4479 We, in America, put in the extra work and take out the old flooring so the new installation doesn't look like shit when all is said and done. 😉
best to just remove toilet and cut a whole with knife which will also be hidden under toilet when replaced you also don't need to unscrew hinges to take a door off theres usually pins u can take out
Yeah, this is the second video I've seen where the installer cut around the toilet and/or pedestal sink. It's not that difficult to take either off the floor and cut a nice clean circle under them so there is no seam behind them.
ik i cringed i was like this is what happens when you give a woman a mans job for your "diversity" hinges arent meant to be unscrewed it leads to them inevitably sagging in the future and the thread failing.
Easily fixed with a wooden golf T. Pound it in the hole, cut off level and bam new wood to screw into. I did this on an old door in my house. Good as new.
