Do want to know How to Remove a Rusted Stuck Toilet Bolt and Nut? Are your rusty toilet bolts spinning in place because they are rusted and fused to the toilet nuts? Stop driving yourself nuts! If your toilet bolts won't come off, we have the closet bolts removal video for you an it's toilet bolt replacement time.
Try toilet bolts replacement in your DIY bathroom renovation
Rusted toilet bolts are a real pain. It's time to remove the old bathroom toilet, but what happens when your old toilet/water closet bolt assembly becomes rusted and fused to the retaining nut? How are you going to get that toilet nut off so you can remove the toilet and install a new toilet in your DIY bathroom renovation? Let's show you how to cut toilet bolts the old school medieval way.
Toilet bolts won't come off
In this bathroom renovation DIY video, we teach you how to remove a toilet, and while you are removing a toilet, how to cut toilet bolts and nuts that are rusted to them. What do you do if your stuck toilet bolts won't come off? We recommend buying an all new closet bolt kit. We'll show you how to avoid future rusty nuts and rust bolts on your toilet installation, and you won't see any more toilet bolts spinning.
If your toilet bolts (also called closet bolts or water closet bolts) won't come off, then you have to go old school on it for your toilet flange bolt removal task and use an angle grinder to slice through both the toilet nut and flange bolt.
DIY toilet removal tips and advice
Make sure your new toilet comes with a new closet bolt kit before you slice through the old closet bolts. You will not be able reuse any old stuck toilet bolts that you sliced through, because rust is your enemy. Also make sure you have new toilet bolt caps; the new toilet bolts will just become rusted toilet bolts unless you protect the toilet bolt and toilet nut with toilet bolt caps. these are the tips you need to know in your DIY project for how to remove a toilet.
how to cut toilet bolts
Forget WD-40 or any of the alleged rust blaster products use on rusty closet bolts, once the rusted toilet flange bolt and toilet nut are fused, you are toast. Then you have frozen closet bolts that will never come unfrozen. The only way to remove rusted toilet bolts and nuts is slicing through the toilet bolt.
Once you buy your new toilet, then your toilet bolt replacement is a simple task, just use the nut and bolt kits supplied with the toilet, and you'll have no more toilet bolts spinning.
While performing the toilet bolts replacement, after removing the old rusted toilet bolts, remember to make sure you tighten down the toilet bolts onto the drain flange tightly at exactly the 9 o’clock and 3 o'clock position to be sure your toilet will face perfectly straight and forward.
Remove old toilet and add new toilet bolts to the toilet flange.
Lastly, remove toilet, add the new toilet bolts, then replace the toilet. With your toilet bolt replacement nearly complete in your DIY bathroom renovation. Be sure to always use the white plastic toilet bolt caps, so that your nice new toilet flange bolts won't corrode and rust in the first place. You never want a repeat performance of rusted toilet bolts, or rusty toilet nuts, or rusty screws ever again. Unless that is, you enjoy watching your toilet bolts spinning.
Toilet bowl replacement with toilet bolts replacement is complete
Congratulations, you are now ready to clear off the old toilet bolts and install the new toilet. We have the link above but did not show the Sani Seal BL01 Waxless Toilet Gasket that comes with a closet bolt kit.
So now you know how to cut toilet bolts, also known as closet bolts. Say goodbye to bathroom toilet bolts spinning. Now you just need to learn how to install a toilet.

how to remove rusted nuts from flange?
@jameswittenborg7400
@jameswittenborg7400 3 года назад
Two things worth mentioning here. First of all, those "white plastic caps" do NOT protect the bolts from rust. I have 4 bathrooms and just replaced a toilet. All toilets showed rust on those bolts and they have all had those plastic caps in place for years. Although I agree with how this video showed grinding the bolt off, this was only possible because of all the room available to maneuver the sawing device. What about the bolt on the other side that is no doubt in close proximity to a wall or tub?

I believe after so many years, all those nuts get stuck on the bolts wether or not they were covered with caps.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 года назад
I have successfully unscrewed many of nuts that were on there for many many years under a cap. I think that if there's been any floods or excessive humidity in the bathroom from lack of use of the ceiling fan then you will see any metal fixture anywhere in the bathroom start to corrode. You will also see the backing on the mirrors around the edges start to develop little blotches where the material disintegrates.

The angle grinder is a great idea. However, an angle grinder would not fit in the tight space when I was working. I opened the bathroom window to ventilate the room. Then I used a plumber's torch to heat the bolts and a pair of vice grips to apply friction to the bolts, by turning and twisting them. The combination of the friction and heat broke the bolts. This is an option for a tight space, where an angle grinder will not fit. Be sure to vent the room; because propane is really for outdoor use.

The whitecaps do not work I moved into this house almost 2 years ago and the bolts on the toiler are completely rusted out and the caps are on them. And the flames will not move at all so I don't know how I'm going to get those new bolts in there and that's why I'm trying to watch this. I would love to hear what you're saying.
@Milosz_Ostrow
@Milosz_Ostrow Год назад
If you don't have an angle grinder or can't work in the available space with an angle grinder, you could use a hacksaw to cut a vertical slit in the bolt, most of the way through the nut, then use a pair of end cutting wire nipper pliers to crack the nut in half and remove the halves from the bolt. Besides, if the bolts and nuts are made of brass, a grinding wheel doesn't work well.

White caps will protect to some degree, but the bolts can still become rusted. Its best to coat the entire bolt with a thin film of 100% pure silicone oil (the higher the cst the better) or a thin coat of dielectric grease.

Yup, that is exactly what we do. Too bad, though not too many people own shop vacs. You can also use a syringe to suck the little bit of water out. IF you can keep the toilet level when you lift it up and put it on a flat cart or dolly, you won't lose any water.

We have seen in the past that virtually any metal snake you run through it scratches the porcelain. Maybe try 2 foot long piece of rubber tubing that you can stick down the throat of the toilet, and make it do that tight s-turn at the back trap of the toilet, and out the bottom hole.

I wouldn't use a wet/dry vac to empty the bowl. It could suck sewer gasses into the house. I pour a bucket of water into the bowl, which will start a flush and when it's done, the water level is greatly reduced. Then I can move the bowl without spilling water everywhere.

This is a fine fix, BUT, big but, this grinder tool can easily go crazy and ruin the toitee, leaving the DIYer proclaiming, I should have just used a sledge hammer to get this off the floor!! Even an expert can make mistakes. This is all just a fair warning to anyone using this kind of tool in proximity to things that matter. What about a reciprocating saw? I'm dealing w/ big nuts under my truck which were lock-tighted and it is nonstop grind. So I am deciding which route: Sawzall or Grinder with cutting wheel. OR start w/ some torching... Sawzall can be a radical thing, and again, one must be steady and in control of the tool. Thanks.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
Sawzalls are more dangerous here because they can bounce all over. The type of brass used for these toilet bolts is soft, and so grinds quickly. You can even use a hack saw. But using a grinder, with both hands, and taking your time is safe.

You keep saying that the previous owner was a moron. Your grinder is upside down, using a tile cutting blade, and not using two hands in the interest of filming so you scar the toilet. Also, those caps do nothing to protect the bolt and nut. They'll corrode regardless.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
You just showed your ignorance I realize you're just a janitor's apprentice, but everyone knows this. Brass toilet bolts are a very soft metal, any blade will cut through it. The toilet was being replaced with a new toilet, I did not care whether the toilet was scarred or damaged in any way, we just need to get those bolts off now, and I was alone, no one to hold the camera, I usually use 2 hands when he films me, I had to get that toilet downstairs for bulk trash pickup the next day. Also you don't pay attention, as I mentioned to the previous person who pointed out the tile cutting blade, I could not find the cutoff blade for the grinder, and my friend who used it last did not know where it was so I went with what I had. And you have no knowledge on this subject of toilet caps. Every bathroom I ever worked on that had exposed toilet bolt nuts were rusted, and every toilet I ever had to remove that had the caps on, the nuts came off perfectly. I realize marginally informed trollers like you just foam at the mouth to come to troll hard working people's videos to make us all look bad show everyone what you think you know, but you fell flat on your face here. In less than 5 minutes, I got the job done with what I had. Stuff happens on the job site and real effective people are the ones who deal with it. Guys like you who are programmed into thinking only one way don't know how to roll with the changes on a job site. So you go ahead and stop for an hour when you realize your metal cutoff wheel is gone, and go waste an hour at Home Depot buying one. Who cares if it's a tile blade, any blade that spins can be used, and it was used, and it was a success.
