In this shower plate installation video we show yo how to replace shower faucet trim for a Moen shower plate. This install turns out to have a Moen shower valve. These concepts work on most shower trim kit installations, for example on Delta faucets, and Delta Trim kits, but the parts shown here are from an old Moen Chateau series.
The first part of your DIY bathroom renovation shower faucet repair is the shower faucet removal of the old Moen shower plate, or your Delta faucet and Delta trim kit.
Moen shower plate replacement
First and foremost, cut off the water supply first, and make sure no water comes out of the pipes when turning on the faucet to test. Then you can start with the shower faucet removal. This is also a great shower faucet repair to make if you have a shower faucet knob loose. This should always be Step #1 in any shower plate installation. Remember this whether you have a Delta Trim Kit or a Moen trim kit shower plate.
shower escutcheon replacement
Once the water is turned off to the bathroom shower, pop the plastic cap off the front of the single knob shower faucet and unscrew the retaining screw in the middle of the shower faucet knob. Once this is done, pull off the single knob shower faucet.
Continue with shower faucet removal
Once the shower faucet knob is removed, then remove the shower faucet plate cover, also known as a shower escutcheon plate, usually held in place by 2 screws.
Once the Moen shower plate has been removed, you can then pull out the old Moen shower valve, by pulling up on the horseshoe shaped retaining clip, and pulling it right out of the top of the shower valve sleeve.
replace shower faucet trim
DO NOT Pull that clip until the water is shut off, or you will gush full pressure water, and become on of those RU-vid plumbing fail videos. Shower escutcheon replacement requires paying close attention to the water, and knowing at all times if it is on or off, and knowing if you are about to do will cause a deluge of water.
As part of your DIY Moen shower faucet replacement project, take your old Moen shower valve to Home Depot, and get a match for a brand new replacement Moen shower valve.
New shower faucet install
As part of your new shower faucet install, replace the new Moen shower valve and slide the retaining clip back into place. Slide in the new sleeve, and if you go with the modern metal handle instead of the older style plastic shower knob replacement, you first attach the correct adapter weight, then attach the new handle with the set screw and Allen wrench.
Shower plate installation
The next part of your DIY bathroom renovation project and shower faucet replacement is the Shower plate installation, where you screw into place the new Moen shower escutcheon plate. With that, your shower escutcheon plate replacement is complete. You have now successfully completed your Moen shower plate replacement.
Don't forget when you complete your shower escutcheon replacement, be sure to place a bead of silicone caulk around the shower escutcheon plate, but leave about the bottom 1" at the 6 O'Clock position un-caulked, so that any water that might get behind the shower escutcheon plate has a way to exit out.
The shower faucet repair is now complete
Now you are ready to perform your own DIY Moen shower faucet replacement and faucet trim kit installation. Now you can help yours replace shower faucet trim kits in the bathroom shower renovation.

Jeff, you just saved me a lot of heartache and headaches. We're trying to do a shower reno. We like our existing shower head as it is new, but we wanted to change the faucet trim and handle because it definitely hasn't been changed since the 1980s. We had no idea that in order to change this, the faucets come with a valve uniquely designed to fit it. There was some miscommunication and misunderstandings around what we wanted and we missed our opportunity to change the valve when the wall was open and all the pipe work was being done. I was feeling so despondent. I was about to have a brand spanking new shower and going to be stuck with an ugly faucet from the 1980s! I looked up shower trims to see if I could at least change the plate if not the handle and low and behold I came across this video. I may not get the exact faucet I want but this is a million times better than what I was about to end up with. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for making this video!

Thank you for the caulking tip! I did not know that. I need this exact wall plate and am having a hard time finding it at home depot. Also, I believe the original installer used permanent thread sealant on my tub spout, so when I tried to unspin it, it snapped off the copper pipe. Good thing I have plenty of experience soldering copper from my air compressor technician years. New spouts are so easy to install!

@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 года назад
You should be able to remove the shower handle and the plate without any problem. Most valves are held together by either a large round screw on ring on the front of the valve that holds the shower cartridge in place, or in the case of Moen in this video, that clip that slides down on the top of the valve holds the cartridge back in place.

Thanks - this was exactly what I was looking for! I have what looks like a loose shower faucet knob and I think this will help me fix it. One question - if I'm only interested in replacing the knob handle is turning off the house water still necessary? Or, if I have things open should I be replacing the shower cartridge as well, in which case I *would* need the water off anyway? Thanks for the great video!
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
Peter yes if you are just changing the knob you can get away with out having to turn off the water but be very careful. Make sure you understand the mechanism of what would make the cartridge come flying out at full pressure. For example on the Moens it's that little vertical horseshoe shaped clip that you would have to pull straight up out of the top to remove the cartridge so just understand so that it doesn't happen to you. I don't know the condition of your escutcheon plate but I often like to replace both the knob and the plate because it looks out of place when you put a brand new nah but you still have an old rusty corroded soap scum filled plate. Depending on how old your previous shower cartridge is it's always a good idea to just put a new one and they're really only about $10 or so. If you do decide to replace the cartridge I would recommend getting some plumber silicone grease and just put a dab of it rub it around the black O rings that are on the outside of the cartridge usually 2 or 3 of them.
@PeterTirrell
@PeterTirrell 5 лет назад
@@jeffostroff Thanks! I think I'll probably go the safe route and cut it off anyway. My current knob looks pretty much exactly like the one in your video, mines a moen, too. If I wanted to replace the cartridge while I was at it is there a way to tell what to replace it with? Do I just look up 'moen shower cartridge' and any will work? That is correct, just make sure you don't pull up on the vertical spring clip that holds the cartridge in the valve, and you will be fine. Otherwise if you pull out that clip the cartridge shoot out and water will start gushing.

@jeffostroff

That is correct, they supply an adapter that screws onto the stem, then the handle attaches to the adapter . You still pull the metal handle to turn on water, and turn left or right for hot and cold water.

Very good video! I was in the process of switching out my hardware as well and turns out the screw holding the the shower knob on was completely stripped out. Also seems as if the threads are stuck/corroded. I’ve tried EVERYTHING to get that old screw out of the brass stem and it’s not budging. Is my best bet to buy a new replacement cartridge? My handle style is the single ball-shaped knob that levers up/down to turn water on/off and twists left/right for hot/cold.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 года назад
Ross go to home depot and look for the Speed Out Screw extractor kit that has worked for me a number of times. If you still can't get the screw out you may have to change out the cartridge and I would make sure that you have the water shut off 1st Otherwise the water will come gushing out at you when you pull out the cartridge.

Sorry to hear that if you can get it taken apart and looks like the cartridge it not damaged, you can try to replace it yourself, then if it doe snot work call the plumber. Just remember to shut off the main water supply before you pull out a cartridge, as that is what is holding the pressurized water back.

@@jeffostroff Well... it "half turned out"; a couple years ago I purchased a new showerhead/handle/faucet set because it was on sale and I thought that I would use it someday... This goes against what you said about first taking apart your existing shower handle, to see who the manufacturer is . I lucked out and the existing is a Moen.. and so is the new one. I do have an issue which I hope that you can assist in... the new set came with a new 4-way plumbing valve - when I saw that I said "hell no"... and set about seeing if I could use what I had. Everything seems to fit except for the fact that I have a gap between the handle and the cover plate... there are a couple plastic fittings included in the set.. I'm hoping that they are some type of adapter so that I can make this work. I took photos... let me see if I can post them - any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated. p.s. I DID NOT caulk around the bottom of the shower plate!

@@karlaelvis9815 put photos online and post the link to them. Often when you buy a new shower kit that comes with it's own 4 way valve, that means time to solder in the new valve. There could be minute differences, new design, did you see if the new valve is the exact same dimensions as the old valve? Anything look different at all? If so, might have to call in a plumber. Had one done at a friend's house 2 months ago, cost $150 for the plumber to do it.
@karlaelvis9815
@karlaelvis9815 5 лет назад
@@jeffostroff The new valve is slightly larger in diameter than the old valve... the old "sleeve" fit, so I left it.... I may just put the old plastic handle back on - the shower is a molded fiberglass unit - they did a nic job cutting the hole for the valve - but the shower will be need to cut again to change out a new valve. I have a friend that is a plumber, so I could do this for no charge.... but all I wanted to do was change the shower head - which I did! I think that I can cut the sleeve shorter and that will solve the problem of the gap.. I'll have my friend take a look - thanks for all of your help!

sometimes it will be obvious, or you just try installing one first and if does not fit right, then try the other.

Hi jeff! Thanks for the clear cut simple explanation, i truly appreciate your videos! I have a question though on my faucet handle my hot/cold indications are set to one specific side even though the original knob it self isn't made to turn to the side (in my opinion) which is partly why i would like to change it, do i need to find some type of very specific nob that also only moves to the specific side for hot/cold or is that something that will work right with any knob that fits it?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 2 года назад
That is really controlled by your shower cartridge, so you need to know which one you have. You can remove it, take it to home depot on shower cartridge aisle, look in the book, determine which one you have, then lookup the instructions for it. They will tell you what knob you can get for it.

Very well done, just wished I'd of seen you caulk around the part. I just came home from a business trip to find a wet spot on the ceiling right below the location of the shower. Can't for the life of me see where the water is coming from. Took off the handle and looked behind and see no wet, still all dusty. So now I'm going to reinstall the prior shower handle, but it wasn't put up with a gasket, just wonder if the water could be coming in thru the area without a gasket?

Very cool. I have a very similar valve circa 1980. It looks like you replaced a pull knob with a twist to turn on knob. Is that right? I'm just surprised that would work.

The handle still pulls the cartridge out like the old plastic faucet pull does. You still turn the valve to change temperature.

Great instructunal vid! Have a question tho, mine is the exact configuration, the old pull out system. With the more modern single handle would I need to pull out to release the water or what's the mechanism, tilt, pull out, etc.? you appear to just swing it left to right, but I assume that's after the water flows to adjust the temp correct?
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 2 года назад
IT depends on the shower valve that is soldered into your wall with the cartridge. Many modern day cartridges just turn on counter clockwise and get warmer

Yes even though I converted to the handle, the stem of the shower cartridge still works the same way, you pull it out to turn on water, then rotate the handle to the desired temperature.

Thanks Jeff, I found your video very helpful! I have a two-part lever shower handle, and the handle part snapped and won't screw back on, so I'm looking into changing it. I'm trying to undo my shower handle to see what brand it is, but there's no visible screw around the shower handle. Are there any other ways in which a shower handle might be attached? Also, in your video you mentioned undoing the caulking from the old shower handle, so I was wondering if after replacing the shower handle / trim kit, do you have to caulk it again after you're done? What do you recommend? Thanks for your videos, and keep up the good work!
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 года назад
There must be a small set screw somewhere on that shower handle. If not, the only other thing I can think of is that it is like a faucet knob, that needs to be pulled off with a puller tool. If you remove the trim plate, you should re apply silicone when you replace the plate.

No Juan you only need to shut off the water if you pull pull the shower cartridge out, or in some cases of shower cartridge, if you pull out the retaining clip holding the shower cartridge in place.

Is there no need for caulking behind that plate I'm just looking at those grooves in the tile and I can definitely see that water would run right behind that place through those grooves? What if that center shaft that the handle attaches to just spins and doesn’t shut the water off? Do they make replacement guts or do you have to remove the whole 4 way out of the wall ?

Can you make a push/pull into a handle kind? Do I need to buy special hardware to make that? Or it’s not possible? Thanks
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 4 года назад
Keep in mind the kid comes with both the handle or the clear plastic ball but it still operates the same way it still pulls out to turn on and it still rotates to adjust the temperature of the water. If you want to change the whole operation of the fossor you would have to have a plumber come in dig a hole in tile and they will have to solder in a brand new mixing valve.

Is it possible to change the shower valve itself for a newer one or a different one? My house came with a shower handle that moves up or down and doesn't have cold/hot markings on it. I simply hate it. I cant begin to tell you how many times i've calculated wrong and gotten a blast of cold water to begin my bath. The shower handle obviously has to go, but i suspect the handle moves up and down rather than left/right because the shower valve itself only moves that way.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 3 года назад
Usually the brass valve housings that the shower valve cartridges slide into are made for that cartridge only, and cannot be changed, unless you buy a shower kit today and re-solder in a new valve. Sometimes people have to cut open the drywall on the other side of the shower to do this, as the hole in the tiles is not big enough sometimes. Another consideration is determine what cartridge you have in there, example Moen 1200 series, and find out if you can pull the cartridge and replace it with a new Moen cartridge that has a different improved mechanism like what you are looking for, and see if it's compatible.
