Video tutorial on how to determine if you have a faulty thermostat. A thermostat is the main controller of the engine cooling circuit, this is what is used to regulate the engines temperature. On a warm-up cycle, the thermostat will remain closed so the coolant does not circuit through the radiator to allow the engine to warm up faster. Once the engine and coolant reach a certain temperature, the thermostat opens up, allows the coolant to flow through the radiator, which in turn cools the coolant, that cooler coolant is pumped through the engine lowering it’s temperature. This particular tutorial was done on a 2000 Volvo S70.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-new thermostat
-coolant
-seal
-tool
-infrared thermometer
Procedure:
-a faulty thermostat will either become stuck open, stuck closed, or perhaps something in between where your temperature fluctuates large amounts
-when stuck open, the engine will take a significant amount of time to warm up, especially more noticeable in cooler climate which is the currently problem with this vehicle
-if the thermostat were to stick closed, then the engine would overheat and if left for a longer period of time, cause extensive damage
-if it were something in between, then you’ll notice the engine not maintaining a constant temperature, running hot or cold
-this vehicle was just running about 15 minutes ago and it is a typical winter temperature today
-it did not reach normal operating temperature after being driven for about an hour
-starting the vehicle, you can see the gauge was at a certain temperature and then dropped slightly which is from the thermostat being stuck open, the cooler coolant within the radiator was pumped through the engine, pasting by the temperature sensor, lower the gauge reading and engine temperature
-we can use an infrared thermometer to check the surface temperature reading before and after the thermostat
-here I will be using the upper and lower radiator hoses, one is removing coolant from the engine and the other is pumping the cooler coolant back into the engine
-top radiator hose, we are looking at about 55 Celsius or 131 Fahrenheit
-next moving onto the lower radiator hose, we’re looking at about 51 Celsius or 124 Fahrenheit
-if we were to continue to measure the temperature with the engine running from a cold start until it slowly warmed up, we would find the values to be the same and very close as the coolant is being pumped through the radiator
-if the thermostat were to be stuck close, making the engine run hot or overheat, then the value at the thermostat would be extremely high and the lower radiator hose would be extremely cold
-as for a replacement overview, the coolant will need to be drained a few litres, but this will depend where the thermostat is located with regards to the engine’s cooling system design
-it is best to probably replace all the coolant as a preventative maintenance step
-most radiators have a drain to remove the coolant, if it does not then you can remove the lower radiator hose
-in this situation the upper radiator hose on the thermostat housing needs to be remove, then the thermostat housing and finally you have access to the thermostat
-a new thermostat will need to be purchased, along with a seal
-once that new thermostat is installed, replenish the coolant system and bleed the system to remove any air
-bleeding procedures will vary between vehicles and this is needed as air can become trapped in the cooling system causing issues
-a proper functioning thermostat will reach it’s specified temperature which is normally around 175 Fahrenheit or 80C to 200 Fahrenheit or 93C and open within a few degrees of that spec.
-using the infrared thermometer again, as the vehicle slowly increases in temperature, the upper and lower radiator hoses remain a colder temperature
-upper radiator hose is about 32 Celsius or 90 Fahrenheit and the lower is about 28 Celsius or 82 Fahrenheit
-again taking a reading we’re looking at about 43 Celsius or 109 Fahrenheit on the upper hose and about 28 Celsius or 82 Fahrenheit on the lower hose

MY VW Amarok has had a cooling system issue recently where it seemed the water temp was colder than it should be. While driving the car, the temp would be around 84 deg, but drop down to 50deg C. Then sometimes go up to 93-96, but quickly back down. I have had the thermostat changed, and while running the first time, the temp steadily went up to 94deg C and was up and down around that temp, but when idling my car for a while, the temp gauge drops down to 45deg C, and while idling, it stays around this low temp. Is that normal for the temp to be that low at idle?

My 2002 Pontiac Firebird has always ran at a certain temp on the gauge. Today, with the AC on (103 degrees weather), it went over that mark and started climbing. I turned the AC off, turned the heater on, and dropped my MPH to 60. The temp gauge went back to normal. 4 months ago, check engine light came on, took it to the repair shop, they said it wasn't the thermostat; whatever they did fixed it. But was told if I have a problem then go back and they will put a thermostat in it. Just wondering, by putting the heater on and cooling down the cooling system, if this might well be the thermostat problem. Thank you. Great video.

Question regarding stuck open thermostat. I was told that if I just remove the radiator cap and cold start the car, I would see immediate flow of coolant right at the radiator cap. Does this method work?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 5 лет назад
It works to a certain extent and this depends on the system's design. In the video, you can see a by-pass in the thermostat so this will still allow for flow, however it is limited. When the thermostat is stuck open, more flow would be present.

Hope you or someone can explain why my vehicle is now stalling at idle when I crank it up in the morning. After it gets to operating temperature, it stops stalling and operates as normal. This all started the other day when my friend changed the thermostat and lower radiator hose. He took off the upper hose by mistake and broke a piece off the radiator inlet or nazzle, but was still able to get the hose and clamp back on. After taking off the housing unit, he noticed the thermostat was not the same as the one that came off. Ww still used the new one. The lower hose had to be cut and is slightly bent. And we completely forgot to bleed excess air out. Besides the stalling at idle, no other issues lol. Heat works just fine.

Question: I noticed acceleration loss towards 55-60kmh on my Venture but initially didn't pay attention to temp. gauge. Once home (3-4 km away), I opened the hood to see coolant leaks on top of the coolant expansion tank and around/under it. But not anywhere near the radiator itself or elsewhere. When running it for a few minutes, even at idle, the temp. gauge would go up high. Because it's extremely cold here today (-28°C), driving it surprisingly lowered the temperature until I slowed down or idled again because of the cool air. Is it safe to assume that this would be caused by a closed or defective thermostat? What would be the best way to test it from home.. I'll look more in depth tomorrow. Would just checking the hot/cold hoses be enough? I'm not sure what else to go off of. And could a head gasket issue cause what I've just described before? I called the garage and he thought this would most likely be the cause, without having seen it yet. Any input is appreciated before I spend on diagnostics please.. thank you!

My car use to over heat. I changed out the Thermostat with a new one on my 2010 Charger. For 2 weeks it ran great & no over heating. Then it started again but this time the water box had no water and over heated. I put 2 gallons and ran great. 2 days later again no water and over heated. There's no water on the asphalt where I park my car. Every 2 days I need to add a gallon to prevent it from over heating. The bottom hose is a little warm and the Top hose is hot. I hope I don't have to change the New Thermostat . I had to take off the Power Sterling Air Compressor Water heater golding tank Certaintie belt The driver's tire to get to the bottom bolt of the AC Compressor. A real pain . I hope it's not that stupid Thermostat but I'm thinking of having to install another new one or do a Radiator Flush to free up the Thermostat that I put in a Month ago. What do you think 🤔 Marty

If it’s leaking, yes that can potentially cause a problem. Your system is not holding pressure and is most likely leaking coolant.

I have a 95 civic hatchback and the temp gauge goes way past the hot symbol after idling for 5 mins but the motor doesnt feel hot. The top hose is hot as hell and the bottom is cold does this mean my thermostat is bad?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 6 лет назад
Definitely don't let it go into the hot zone, you can damage the head gasket or warp the head. You could have a faulty temperature sensor, air in the system, or the thermostat could be stuck. The temperature sensor most likely can be tested with a multimeter taking a resistance reading. As for air in the system, that could only really happen if you recently did work to the coolant system.
@Bear8Photo
@Bear8Photo 7 лет назад
if the upper radiator hose is really hot doesn't that mean that the thermostat is opening properly?
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 7 лет назад
Well that means the thermostat is open, so coolant is following. So it's either working properly or stuck open.
@Bear8Photo
@Bear8Photo 7 лет назад
I think what was happening was that the thermostat was opening really late after the vehicle was already overheating. Replaced the thermostat and it's not overheating anymore.
@4DIYers
@4DIYers 7 лет назад
Yep that can happen. Sometimes the problem will disappear, but I wouldn't risk not replacing it. Overheating the engine can cause a large amount of damage.

Yes autozone will purposefully sell a thermo that is rated 195 F when your stock was 175 F that causes huge issues on older cars. 20 degrees is the difference between maintaining and boil over.

My lower radiator hose is cold after warmup and when I'm driving. My lower radiator hose popped off this morning. I put coolant back into the system and tightened the hose clamp pretty good. @65sohc
@65sohc 4 года назад
The rad fan is designed to come on anytime the A/C is turned on, regardless of coolant temperature. It sounds like your coolant is not getting hot enough for the coolant temp sensor to actuate the fan. Most likely thermostat is stuck open. A faulty radiator alone NEVER overcools the engine.

What was the problem? I have the same issue with my infinity
@JPSimen
@JPSimen 4 года назад
I'd say you put the thermostat in backwards. It will never open causing extreme overheat on one side only, also can have to purge air out of system so that your thermostat actually has liquid on it to open up. And finally it could be autozone sold you a high temp thermostat in that it opens way too small allowing the coolant to boil and make air pockets at housing keeping it shut.
@JPSimen
@JPSimen 4 года назад
Infinity needs to be purged of all air or it will continue to overheat. If the overheat continues , the head gaskets one or two could be blown lowering the coolant as it is scavenged from the coolant system into the pistons steaming out.
@JPSimen

Worst case scenario, the head is cracked

Good tip, however it's not something I'd personally do. For the most part a thermostat is $20 and they can last 200,000km, maybe less or more. I'm pretty picky with maintenance and if you ever had a cold day or travelled somewhere cooler, it'll take the vehicle longer to warm up and increase fuel consumption until the engine kicks off the cold cycle.
