Thanks to Quad Squad i managed to build my own infinity dodecahedron.
I used CNC milled plexiglass (150mm sides)
- The frame designed by Quad Squad; www.dropbox.com/s/pg3rhvcmyrf...
- Edge supports to strenghten the structure; www.dropbox.com/s/m0rywqdly0y...
- 4.5 meters of 144 leds/m strips; nl.aliexpress.com/item/326820...
- 1 roll of mirror foil; nl.aliexpress.com/item/329073...
- SP107E Led controller; nl.aliexpress.com/item/329205...
SCHEMATIC VIEW: www.dropbox.com/s/ga2tz5gmlxt...
Total current draw at full brightness is more than 15 amp at 5V.
I always limit the brightness to around 5 amps max (for not melting internal wiring....) at 5 amps it is more than bright enough.

For anyone that wants to build this, i uploaded a nice how-to build video with clear steps to make one yourself: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PoqOcpH4kLc.html

Thank you for the video! I will try to also build one like this, but I whil try to use 12v Adressable leds. Also I plan to build a base and use a slip ring to stand the dodecaedron on one of its corners while being able to spun around its achsis.

the trick is 2 pair of mirrors, one BEHIND the light source and one in between your eyes and ABOVE the light source, this last mirror MUST BE 50% transparency, what it means its light passes 50% and bounces 50%, the first mirror is 100% reflection so light gets trapped and multi mirrors the images, making that astonishing effect.

also do you know what version of the frame you used? I tried to reinforce the corners in later versions
@chagay
@chagay 4 года назад
@@quadsquad3087 I used frame version16.skp, mad probs for creating this one!, i tried making my own with Fusion 360 but did not succeed in making the right angles for it. Yours was very nice, but i could not really fit the plexiglass inside it. I dont know why, i printed the parts with an Ender 3 (PLA) and again with an Ultimaker 5 (tough PLA) but it seemed like the plexiglass was a little bit to large (long) for the frame parts.... I checked the sides and they were exactly 150mm.... So your frame parts were coming together, but not like they should i think. I inserted the plexiglass after making the full dodecahedron with your frame parts, this is why i needed the support pieces, because the structure was a little bit weak without them. The support pieces strengthen the structure and keep the plexiglass nice inside.
@quadsquad3087
@quadsquad3087 4 года назад
@@chagay yeah, I spend some time in sketch up modeling it, having no right angles sucks. In the end i think it was 152mm edge, so maybe I scale it down and then plexi wouldn't fit. I'm waiting for led strip, and will build second one, can you share your corner pieces?

@@quadsquad3087 Maybe you should make some kind of diffuser for the light, a transparant 3d printed piece that makes the leds nice and diffuse, i think this will make it even more awesome to look at!

Very nice! Question about LED width.. both of the frame Sketchup files show an 8mm wide LED tape surface, but you reference 10mm wide LED strips... what am I missing here? I mean, I understand I can scale them up, but just wondering.
@chagay
@chagay 4 года назад
Led strips overlap the frame parts a little bit indeed, you could improve the frame parts by making them the same size as the led strips... but you do not really see it in the end result.

Did your film have the sticky material like glue? Mine does not and is sliding around really bad after application. I also can't seem to get 100% of the bubbles out mostly due to the film sliding a lot. Will this set/do minor bubbles cause a major issue? Also how did you get the final piece in after soldering them all together, did you simply leave the frame disconnected and force it in? Any tricks or recommendations on how to solder inside well?
@chagay
@chagay 3 года назад
My mirror foil did not have sticky material, i applied it with soap underneath, and carefully removed (95%) of the bubbles with a credit card. I firstly glued the frame (like you can see in the pictures in the video) and then forced the plexiglass in (they snapped in to place) Soldering inside can be tricky, thats why i put the plexiglass in last, then you can insert your head through 1 pentagon and solder a little bit better......

Noob here, trying to figure out what type of power supply I would need for this. If I understand correctly, 144led/m @4.5m (648led total) = 194.4w (@0.3/led) // that would require a 5V / 38.9A power supply. Did you use a 5v / 5A power supply and just under power it?
@chagay
@chagay 4 года назад
Hi, like said in the description, i never power it to 100% brightness. Than you would need much beefier cable, and i wanted to make the wiring not visible. I run until 50% brightness max, then i can already feel the wires warm up. 50% brightness is more than enough light!

So I'm trying to make a smaller version of this but i want to make it portable so I also need to build a battery pack that can provide enough power. What I'm building will be a bit smaller (edge lengths of about 4.25in) and I was originally going to use 60led/m strips because the 144 would use too much power to be feasible, since that would be 468 LED's at 60mah max = 28,000 amps... So I'm confused as to how you're getting only 15,000mah draw at max brightness and more so confused as to how they're running normally at 5,000mah; is this something to do with power injection?
@chagay
@chagay 2 года назад
A smaller version indeed sounds cool! What you need to realise is that these WS2812 leds are controlled by an controller (can be arduino/SP107E etc...) They have a brightness that is settable between 0-255, so you can run them at very low brightness and keep the current very low. When i ran the leds at full brightness, all the leds try to consume their max power, but because we feed the leds with 5V only, the voltage will drop the longer the led strip is. That is why the leds at the far end of the 5 segments, only receive about 3-4V, and therefore cannot light up to their full brightness, so they do not use the max current whith what you are calculating. Anyway, there is absolutely no need to run them at full brightness, they are super bright at half their max brightness level already, and because the mirror foil "darkens" the inside of the dodecahedron, even in daylight the leds are super visible.

...a one inch deep flat black octagon base would've tastefully hid the wires/connections....been trying to do one myself- getting started beyond research is dawnting to say the least.. 2-way plexi..ok, micro-pixel leds another story...unless that's on a pre-step program, can't imagine the work programing per-pixel especially if your OCD trying to surprise, excite and unexpected happenings to viewers...like Charles Bronson in, Once upon a time in the west.......someday !...good job

Hi, i used Fusion 360 to just draw a 5 sided-polygon with sides of 150mm. Then i gave that to a friend of mine who has a cnc cutting company, and he cut the plexiglass for me. He used a high quality HAAS mill to cut the plexiglass.
