Thanks a lot Stetan, you are the only one in the internet or RU-vid with such a brilliant idea for making a ladder stabilizer. You just saved me good chunk of money.

Great idea! Nice because it can be positioned near the end of the ladder if ladder length is at a premium. For the 2x6 part, I think I’d want to make it out of stacked up pieces of OSB, maybe up to 3 inches thick altogether, screwed together with lots of super long black drywall type screws, maybe some glue thrown in. Also would make it longer so the arms could be out farther. Then with the arms, I’d attach them top or bottom side instead of on the ends using pairs of long U-bolts through the OSB. That would make the arms adjustable.

Thank you , and I know its stronger than a few of those hollow aluminum stabilizers that bend and crack . This is just what I need to build .

Brilliant. I was looking for something just like this. I don't want to drop the cash one of those brackets and I have a whole house worth of gutters to install. But I have a bunch of scrap wood laying around. Thank you.

I made this and it worked great with a 32" extension ladder. Points of note: - Next time I'd use a 2x8 instead of the 2x6. Up that high I was concerned that there wasn't that much wood between the hole and the edge of the 2x6. I'd feel more comfortable with another couple of inches. - The instructions say 2x2's for the arms. No way those are 2x2's in the video. A 2x2 measures 1-1/2" x 1-1/2". Those look like 2x3's. That's what I used and they were plenty strong. - Someone suggested making the 2x6 longer. It really depends on what you're using it for. I was installing gutter guards. I only wanted the ends to go around 6" beyond the ladder because if was longer, I wouldn't be able to get close enough to work on the ends. I used 4-1/2"" deck screws to attach the arms to the 2x6. Three on each end, into pilot holes. Using a 2x8 would allow enough room for 4 screws which would make me even feel more comfortable. A clever design, easy to make, worked great, would modify as noted next time.

Top notch suggestions, I'm going to use these design consideration in mind when building my own! I was thinking the same thing about not enough wood around the hole, if there's a split in the wood right there it can theoretically fall apart. And yes, thicker arms and better attachment could be needed. I also don't really know why that other guy suggested making the arms longer.... Doesn't look needed here and the farther away you are from the roof the more dangerous it is.

Gee guys, I have not looked at this since I posted it. 12500 views, I cannot believe it. Thank you very much, I am really humbled.

And that doesn't slip or slide up the roof at all? It feels like once you climb the ladder your body weight would make it slide up...but maybe not. Thinking of trying this

@@ryanridky3700 Depends on the kind of roof I guess. Mine has a rough surface so it does not slip. Also, the tighter the fit to the ladder the less movement from the body weight, maybe for a slippery roof use a 4x6, it will certainly make it less likely to move.

Yeah, my roof is shingle as well so maybe it'll be fine...don't wanna find out the hard way tho haha. I'll play around with some designs this weekend. Thanks for the idea!
