Hi Jennifer ! I wanted to share my girl friend's idea: she's made Christmas ornaments with the mod podge but used old ornaments that were in need of an upgrade. I thought this was a great way to use some of my "scarred" ornaments. Again, Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year. :-)

@animallovefest143
@animallovefest143 5 лет назад
I do the same! But don't you think that card stock would be harder to tack down, and stay in place? I think it would be the same with photos. Have either of you tried it yet?
@debbieelholm7921
@debbieelholm7921 5 лет назад
@@animallovefest143 I wouldn't use the heavier card stock, that's for sure, but the lighter papers would work. I wouldn't use the photos that are printed on photo paper either, but if you print them out using your printer paper, that would be light enough that you should be able to manipulate to make the ornaments.

I wish I had read the comments before I made my ornaments. My ornaments are memorial ornaments for my nephew and mother-in-law. I used my nephew's dress shirt and my mother-in-law's nightgown on each ornament, Even though I have buckled seams, I think my family will love and treasure them. I mixed the fabrics on each ornament, so it's more patchwork. My friends say that imperfections give them character, so I'm going to go with that. Thank you for your videos. I'm starting to order from your site exclusively.

Yes you can make these with polystyrene balls. I've done loads of these using PVA glue. So much fun with children and be prepared for stickiness. I've neveve used modge podge but I think I'll give it a go. With a polystyrene ball you have to use pins and ribbon for a hanger. Also I have done star shaped polystyrene and the are lovely with gold fabrics and a tough of glitter. These balls are fab.

Hello, again! I have experimented with ways to do away with the "bubble" issue and found a way that eliminates them completely. Cutting on the bias does do away with the bubble, but some fabric prints you just don't want to bias cut, so ... back to "lab". I tried using pinking shears and there were absolutely no bubbles, but since the Modge Podge was wet, couldn't tell if the pinking shear cuts would show, so had to wait for it to pretty much dry. The pinking shears worked perfectly. No bumps, no bubbles and the pinking cuts don't show up, at least on my fabric and I used some light and some dark. Just wanted to give you an update. I really like the ornaments.

Just a thought, I usually coat with Mod podge, then coat whatever medium I am adherring to project then smooth each layer. Then when all medium is applied I go back over everything and seal with 1-2 coats of the Mod Podge. And Wah La!! Done! I really like the idea of coating with the glitter, also just watched a video of Epsom salt!! You could glue chunky pieces of silver glitter as well! And maybe some small Rose's for more vintage look and ribbon

suggestion, put the ball onto a chop stick and wrap a rubber band around it near the ball to hold it firmly. easier to cover all sides of the ball. some balls have sharp glass edges under the metal hook which you have removed. you don't want to get finger cut

Great project and tips from comments as well. I've never used Mod Podge before so found I had to keep a damp cloth on hand for sticky fingers. Shorter strips worked better for me and even squares to cover bald spots. Also found it better to do the top of the ornaments last so the fabric wasn't bunched as I was holding it. A toothpick helped to smooth out any bumps & pull off random threads. Not sure if I used too much Podge but it worked better after 1st coat to leave overnight. I made little labels with year & names with white cotton & permanent marker. How much of it did you use? I used up a whole bottle for 8 ornaments. Thanks for the project!

Hello. We're not sure what would work best for that kind of project. We've only ever used Mod Podge for fabric crafts, and it may or may not be a good option for what you need. We always recommend testing on small scraps before committing to big projects. Mod Podge might be a good place to start your experiments. Let us know how it goes. - Morgan

Hi Mark - Yes, you can mix the two together for applying at the end. Jen was using fabric from a 2.5" roll, so she cut those strips into 4" segments. Hope this helps! -Michelle

What size balls do you use. Can they be the two part fillable balls or must they be they one piece onesl
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 8 лет назад
I believe theses are 2.5" balls +Melita Clark. I think the two part ones will work as long as you can stick pins in them and they will hold together!

to dry them put on a chop stick and then put the "lollypop" stick into a jar or vase so thar the balls splay out and don't touch me each other or crumple up wax paper and sit the balls on it so the don't roll around

About how many stripes in all do you think? Does it have to dry completely between coats of MP? Would Epsom salts be to heavy for the glitter?
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 4 года назад
Great questions! We're not sure how many strips make up an ornament. It's been a while since we've made these, but it's great for scraps, so you could make one to see about how many you use. We recommend letting it dry completely. Epsom salts might work, we haven't tried that! - Morgan

There doesn't seem to be a reason why you couldn't use Epsom salts!
@animallovefest143
@animallovefest143 5 лет назад
I would think the larger the coating is, it will come off easier, when storing, and handling. And I would suggest putting a spray sealer on, even over the glitter, so it doesn't flake off, and you get it everywhere. I use the Mod Podge "Clear Acrylic Sealer-Gloss" to cover any glitter items that I do, and it works great, and holds the sparkle of the glitter. Hope this helps 😽

Does the fabric have to be in even strips? Can they be different shapes?
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 5 лет назад
You can use any variation of shape, or fabric of your choice. You may have to play with it a little more for your fabrics to lay flat; however that is what would give your ornament your own unique touch. Happy Quilting! -Kyla

Does it have to be cotton fabric? I was thinking to let granddaughters cut up one of their old shirts & modge it on. Do u think it would work? Then add glitter? I am watching all ur Christmas videos one after another. I call it "Falling down the rabbit hole". Lol

Great question! You can most certainly try any other fabric material. In the beginning of the video Jen even says that she used to make them out of paper when she was a kid. I would recommend that you get the right Mod-Podge that you think will hold it together well. Thank you for watching! - Yajaira

Mod Podge is a water based sealer and glue product. If you have white craft glue that dries clear, you can add a bit of water to it to make it more "paintable" and that will work as an adequate substitute!

@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 5 лет назад
Thank you so much for watching! We haven't done a tutorial using photos with the fabrics, but imagine it could be done really easily using the same Mod-Podge method. Patriotic fabrics would make a great substitution for Christmas fabrics, and the no-sew "quilted" Christmas ornament tutorial we did would look gorgeous in red, white, and blue. @@ShabbyFabrics Are you talking about printing the photos on the fabric, or using actual printed photos? It just seems like even Mod Podge would have a difficult time tacking them down, maybe this would be a great future video 😺

What is the told times you coated the ball with the Mod Podge?
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 5 лет назад
Thanks for asking, Michelle! We don't remember how many times we coated the entire ball. It doesn't really matter, as long as all of your strips are secured down. When you're coating the ball with Mod Podge after to add the luster, you'll just do that to whatever level you prefer. Usually 2 or 3 times works really well. Does that help? - Morgan
