In the 80s I did floors in rental properties with a similar technique. I also wanted a metallic shimmer, I purchased super fine glitter and sprinkled it throughout. I never thought about applying sealant prior to applying paper, I also never considered applying stain to the paper prior to placing it on the concrete. Both are great ideas. Eliminating extra time actually on the floor is a huge plus. Thank you for the thorough tutorial. I recently saw rolls of unwaxed brown paper online via Staples, among others I cannot recall right now. Your fans could Google it along with gallons of Elmer's Glue. I believe I ordered my glue via Walmart.com.

Great job!!! Speaking of Elmer's Glue... When I went to get an estimate for my Acting Studio Sign... and I told them I want it very Glittery ... they said it would cost approx. $1600. ... Well after making the sign myself (since I had worked at a sign co years before) I did all the work and put Elmer's Glue with literally pounds of glitter on each letter allowing it to sit for 24 hours before taking off the excess glitter... My sign was 4' x 8' and turned out absolutely Beautiful... the secret was to POUR as much glitter on the very thick glue (each letter)... and allow it to just sit for over 24 hours... Even after rain and storms... the glue stuck beautifully without a spray on top (that dulls the glitter)... We love our Elmer's Glue... I learn just how good this glue was when I used to fix old furniture... Your Video is great... Beautiful job... Thank you sharing... ;)

The best explanation for doing this. I was going to put tile back down in my kitchen floor we’re completely gutting and remodeling. Can’t find the tile that I really want and honestly hate tile. I’ve been researching for weeks and yours looks the absolute best. I hope mine looks as great as yours.

***** I am trying to find you on face book I want to do this on a basement floor. the floor was plain brown and then I coated it with white zinsser to seal it. I went to the local paint store and the guy advised me not to do this as the glue would not stick to the cement and then the stain would not stick to the cement. do not know what to do tried to find you on facebook but could not find you. I need advice before I can continue Linda Jirous thanks
@FurnitureRefinishingAcademy
@FurnitureRefinishingAcademy 10 лет назад
Linda Jirous I am in no way a professional on this matter. I can tell you that it worked for me. I think when all is said and done the floor acts like one large floor covering. Kinda like a linoleum or even a hardwood floor (which is usually floating over the concrete not glued down) it's one large piece of flooring helps it stay in place as it works with the hardwood floors. We have had no issues with any shifting. We sealed ours with clear caulking around the base boards when it was all dried and sealed. Also through my research this technique has been around since the 1970's or earlier. I have heard of no one having issues with the floor shifting or not staying in place. It has been done on wood and concrete sub floors. Hope this helps! ~ Grace

I love the contrast the dark crack like parts & the brown & best the sparkles. I liked the other paper bag tutorials but this is the first with the most contrast & sparkles I've seen & it's gorgeous. I want to do this one. Hope my husband will agree. Sure beets a vinyl floor. Vinyl is tough but it's also plain & will cost us $600 if we do this. That would sort of ruin Christmas you know. Oh well.

I agree, Those are my favorite parts too! I believe it is because I stained the pieces BEFORE installing them. Most tutorials have you installing them then staining. I did a full bath, a kitchen and my laundry room for under $200! Thank you for your comment.

I have done one bedroom but I did mine over hard wood floors, crazy I know🙁 but the floors were so damaged even after sanding. But I love this look my floor came out beautifully. But as time went on I noticed my mistakes. So I'm doing another bedroom in a couple days and I like how you have done yours the most 🤗🤗🤗🤗I will not rush this time and I only used three coats if I would have used more coats I would not have the issues I'm having Now. So a lesson learned for me🙄🙄🙄 I'm going to repair the issues after I finish the next bed room.

for my concrete floor I did not use glue first- I mixed 1:1 polyurethane and water/ I used a brush to thoroughly wet the floor, dipped a crumpled up ball of paper for only a second, SQUEEZED it out (not too hard) and then laid it down, pressing it with my fingers (i did this with and without rubber gloves - no diff if you wash your hands immediately, pain in the butt to get off your skin if you dont) This mething I believe allowed the paper wood pulp to 'expand' before you laid it down, and you press from the center out to eliminate air bubbles. There were STILL some more air bubles after it laid there (still expanding) but 99% of those went away as it dried. The few that remained, I just scraped a but and laid a new piece over the next day fixing spts heare and there

Wow! This is by far the most beautiful floor I've seen using this method. So many great ideas. I think I am going to give this a try - but I need to make it durable enough for high traffic. Do you think epoxy would do a better job for that purpose than the poly? Also, I would like to do this over my kitchen floors that have vinyl - they don't have grout lines - would I use any different products that you may be aware of, or just keep it all the same? Love-love-love this floor! Thanks for sharing.

Hello was wondering if u know if the paper bag can be stained after the poly has been laid... just finished my paper bag countertops and i love them just we decided to also do the cabnets white last min.. hay might as well do everything. .. and wish I would have did a walnut stain on the paper bag instead of leaving it plain.. i like it but with white cabinets I feel I darker countertops would look best.. do u know if this could be done

Hi Richard - not sure if folks use this in the States, but do you think wallpaper paste would do as a substitute for the glue? The Elmer’s glue recommended is really expensive here. Cheers. Kate
@teed4354
@teed4354 5 лет назад
@@kated6442 I'm not sure if wallpaper paste will work the same as I've seen no one use it but Elmers glue is called PVA glue here in the UK and is really cheap! It's just the glue kids use at school. I bought a 5 litre bottle on ebay for £8.99 and I know you can get 500ml bottles of it in the poundshop. Good luck!

Love the look of your floor! I'm doing a new floor in a "trailer" that has a wood-ish subfloor. It seems similar to particle board. How do you think the PBF would be on it? I don't have a sample per day except on the floor itself. I planned on a laminate but it seems so "logical"... I'm definitely the one to think outside of that logic... I'll Facebook you too as this is something I will do in about 2 weeks... cost effective compared to that laminate would be sweet savings. And unique! I love unique! You used a gloss... I'd prefer a satin... what do you think of that? I like the subtle look of satin.

I have watched several versions of the PBF . Yours appeals to me the best. my deco is Western rustic. with pine Mexican furniture. native American fabric couch loveseat. I would like a leather look with me drawing native pictures, nature, animals and foot prints , some cactus , flowers.. I just a natural western look on a leather looking background. however think I will use a satin vs the gloss finish.

I'm surprised the polyshades held up. They say not to use it on hardwood. I would think it would show wear even more on concrete considering it's not as porous as wood that can suck it in better. I put it down on my hardwood living room and now debating on whether I should completely re-sand it and start over. I just put the polyshades on yesterday. I didn't see the label on the back of the can that said "not for use on floors" :(

Oh my gosh, Grace - your work is just beautiful!! I can't stop thinking about this flooring treatment since seeing it in another video a few weeks ago! I want to replace all my downstairs carpet, room by room, with this method and then just accent with area rugs. My question is this: I love the variation you have in your stain. I see that you used two different shades. Did you lay down the walnut stain first and then accent with the black stain? How did you achieve the variegated/veined look? It's stunning... Thanks!
@FurnitureRefinishingAcademy
@FurnitureRefinishingAcademy 10 лет назад
Actually the walnut was not dark enough so I mixed the black into it to create one darker shade. Only one color of poly was applied to the paper. Thanks for asking.

Watching your video & checked out your blog... Quick question... How well did you clean your concrete floors before you did this... I am in the process of trying to get up all the gunk from the laminate that was there (and there is tons) did you leave any of the gunk on your floor or did you get it up 100%...

Wendy Shumate I did not get the gunk up 100% but I did get it as smooth as possible but in some places it was still tacky. After scraping I did a lot of sweeping. and vacuuming for dust etc. Key is no lumps or bumps.

Thanks for sharing. I recently had water damage and my laminate floor had to be removed. I do not want to put laminate back and plan to try this. I hope I can do as good a job as you! I have questions - my living room floor where I shall do this 20' x 16' with a media niche 8" x 8'. Would you know how much paper and supplies I will need? And best place to purchase maybe. I don't want to under or over buy. Also it seems with a large space it would be easier and less time consuming to maybe roll the stain on, what are your thoughts. Is sanding necessary? And when cleaning, will regular mopping be ok? Thanks
@FurnitureRefinishingAcademy
@FurnitureRefinishingAcademy 10 лет назад
Shannon, -I would find out your square footage and then add about 1/3 of that to your total. This will help with account for the pieces you won't use and the overlap. -I purchased my paper at Lowes. If you buy the contractors paper watch out for the kind with a waxy finish. You don't want that one... but one of the beauty's of this project is if you save our grocery bags you can use those and save money. -You can roll the stain on after your install but I found that the paces with and without glue came out different also you won't get the variation in color I did it will be more uniform, witch is not a bad thing... just a preference. - Sanding is necessary, not between every coat though. I did it between every other coat. also I didn't do it after about a month (I had to take a break and could not finish all the coats of poly) I didn't sand it after it had be walked on and cleaned and I regret that. Even though it had been cleaned well it still had oil residue from being part of the kitchen and some of the poly pealed right up. I had to then sand it down again through two layers of poly and redo that spot. - Cleaning, you can google how to clean poly sealed floors. It is the same as the poly sealed wooded ones. Basic gentle cleaners and a mop will work just fine. Hope this helps.

You should always use Polyurethane for floors on floors, I would not recommend using a furniture poly for floor application, I run the paint department of a home improvement store and I know the difference. The durability of poly for floors is much higher than the one for furniture.
@chachi67
@chachi67 10 лет назад
How much square footage is your bathroom? Also, did you notice any change in temperature on the floor after you put down the paper?
@FurnitureRefinishingAcademy
@FurnitureRefinishingAcademy 10 лет назад
Chachi67, Thanks for asking. Our bathroom is about 9 ft x 5 ft but the counter sink, the half wall and the toilet take away from that sq ft. Second yes there is a slight change but with concrete based flooring the ground underneath keeps it from changing to low. The linoleum that was down before had very little insulation either. We are in Norhtern CA. It could just be a change in the weather causing the slight temperature difference. Since we did this at the end of summer and now we are getting our colder weather. It has not caused us to want to wear slippers though... it's not that cold to walk on.

KISS it Donna... keep it simple. I have always tried to use simple house hold cleaners. I use just vinegar and water. If I need to shine it up a bit I may actually use a window cleaner now and then.

Do you know where I can find information on preparing a wood for for this?

Hello Tamara, Wooden subfloors are even easier. Rip up your carpet. Get all the staples out and start gluing. Skip the staining the floor part. The rest is the same. Hope this helps.

Could I do this over vinyl floors or do I need to remove the vinyl first?

I have seen it done over the vinyl... but the dip where the faux grout lines are in the vinyl will show up as dips on the floor in the end result. Hope this helps.

So combine what products together to put on the floor to prep??? I'm watching this years later lol! Doing my cement patio for my hot tub to sit on.
@FurnitureRefinishingAcademy
Don't combine any products, I combined the two methods. So I polyurethane the floor.... then also pasted the glue mixture onto the poly then the paper.

Hi! I am about to begin the journey, lol. I am following your directions because it is just so pretty! But I have heard many others talk about how you need to use the same side of the paper or there will be problems. Did you run into anything having to do with that? Thanks!

Laura, So far so good! We did the floors in our home 6 months before we moved out. They had a renter in that home for a year. Floors held up just fine no problems so far! :) I would follow the temperature directions on the cans of products. We did ours in August or Sept in CA... so warm weather all around. Make sure you have plenty of ventilation!

So you said that the poly and the elmers together worked well to suction. Was the poly still wet, when you applied the elmers? Or did you apply the poly and let it dry and then start with the elmers and paper application?

Red Tankgirl I ask as I have a wood floor that is partially still having poly on it and partially worn. I don't want to sand it off first but wasn't sure if the elmres would stick to the existing varnish on the floor. What do you think?

Red Tankgirl I think it would matter if the existing is oil based or not. If you brush some watered down glue onto the surface does it separate or stay in place? The poly I used was water based. But for a wood subfloor you shouldn't need the poly first the glue will stick to the wood on it's on just fine. Test it and see.. but possibly a light sanding would help if the glue does separate.
