Anyone else get excited by the start of these videos, then get depressed at the sight of the workshop - like we've all got one of those?

Ahhh! Ha! Ha! Yes, for the cost of all that stuff you could hire someone to re-do your kitchen entirely. However, it is a great video.

Exactly. The very first Episode of Norm Abrams 'New Yankee Workshop' he promised to build some thing using only 'one hand tool'. What he meant was $100k of professional shop equipment, and only one hand tool.

This is a DIY for carpenters 😅

Wow. I’m surprised by the comments on this. I found this VERY helpful. It was straightforward and pretty simple. I’m not a master carpenter, I’d say I’m just a click above “beginner” and I followed along easy. I am currently building kitchen cabinets and decided to build in a trash drawer like this. I’ve been struggling with how to approach it but this has given me a good place to start. Thank you!

Very cool, but DAAANG that was complicated and required a lot of equipment to pull off. I guess this should be titled "DIY - if you're a carpenter with a shop full of equipment"

He uses a lot of specialty equipment...but you really only need glue, a drill, and a table saw and you can do the same build.
@ImALefty08
@ImALefty08 3 года назад
@@RyanMonty not even actable saw, you can use a circular saw to do all of the cuts. Or even a jig saw if that's the only power tool you have. Or if you're really in a tight budget, with skills, you can do all of these cuts with a regular saw. There are a lot of options IF you really want to build this.
@FowlerAskew
@FowlerAskew 2 года назад
I mean, these are like the basic woodworking power tools. A table saw is usually the first stationary tool people get, and you don't even need it for this. A circular saw (or a hand saw) will work just fine as long as you plan out your cuts

Excellent video. I was looking different designs for a pull out bin. Our 6 month old Weimaraner has figured out how to open our free standing trash can to access all that it beholds, so I need another solution. Fortunately, I happen to have an extra set of 24" full extension drawer slides, along with enough scrap ply and maple so my only cost will be the two plastic bins. BTW, I love the comment "Making sure to properly document the shavings coming off my hand plane". I can't seem to resist holding the shavings up to the light to make sure I can see through them. Again, great job.

"document the shavings coming off my hand plane" - haha! I love the tip about guiding the forstner bit. Can't tell you how many times I've needed to enlarge a hole with a forstner bit and struggle with that. A simple guide block never crossed my mind in that setting. Great video and super thorough!

Most any ball bearing drawer slide manufacturer also makes a rear bracket which allows you to mount the front of the slide to the cabinet face frame and the rear of the slide to the back of the cabinet, no shims needed along the sides. I measure the depth of the cabinet, subtract an inch and order that length slide with rear brackets. Then I cut a 2-3" wide strip of 1/2" plywood maybe a 1/16" wider than the width of the front face frame opening and mount the rear brackets flush with the ends of the plywood strip. The slides slide into the rear bracket, you attach the front to the face frame and push the plywood backer back to the back wall of the cabinet making sure it's square to the face frame and screw it to the back wall of the cabinet. Job done.

Great video! I'll prob be using it as a reference to build one myself. One question though; are you worried about the trash cans becoming too heavy for the 1/4" plywood on the base of the drawer? I'm wondering if I should consider 1/2" with 2 trash cans.

a quarter inch bottom seems a bit filmsy. I use 3/4 bottom pocket screwed - it's on wheels so the weight is negligible - and the added momentum feels more substantial, smoother action.
