This is video on how to replace your garbage disposal, more specifically the inSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal. Your kitchen garbage disposal will eventually stop working and need replacing so why hire a plumber to replace it when you can do it pretty easily and quickly?
Definitely read the instructions and if you don't have the time or aren't confident in your abilities then definitely hire a professional. I just happened to have replace a few of these before and this was what I did and how it went for me.
What you'll need:
Exact drop in replacement garbage disposal: InSinkErator Badger 5 Model 5-87A (We bought the unit in the video from Amazon because included the electrical cord)
Flat Head Screwdriver
Labor - about 30 mins

Please do it the right way. First , you need the lock the bracket or the whole thing will fall out with vibration one day. Second, The parts you called not needed at 0:29 are actually key to having a proper job completed and eliminating future leaks. There is a fiberglass seal and the putty between the sink and that sink flange that needs to be replaced as they get brittle. I would also use the new retainer ring for good measure. Here is a video for a better job ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lmucX9Gijlk.html

Thanks for the tutorial. That "excess" tube is actually the dishwasher drain and you are absolutely supposed to lock the mounting bracket into place to keep the bracket from vibrating out of position and dropping the disposal. I just finished replacing my Badger 5. All went well except when I went to run my dishwasher I realized I forgot to knock out the dishwasher drain plug in the disposal. I'm wondering, rather than disassembling everything and removing the disposal to knock the plug out, can I just drill it out in place? I do have enough clearance in my cabinet to line the drill up, and I can drill slowly and hold a vacuum cleaner hose nearby to suck up plastic debris as I'm drilling. So if a small amount of drilled material gets in the disposal chamber will that hurt anything?
@bensaysthings
@bensaysthings 2 года назад
I think this would work and any small amount of drilled plastic shouldn't hurt the disposal. Just run it and flush water through it afterwards. However if you can get someone to hold the disposal steady maybe you can still knock out the plug with a screw driver and hammer. I think this will ensure the entire plug is removed as opposed to drilling since when you drill you're risking a jagged or rough inner lip where the plug used to be. That rough inner lip might allow debris to accumulate and catch from the dishwasher.
@4rowsofgemstones134
@4rowsofgemstones134 2 года назад
Thank you and all was helpful but from woman's point of view, you have to line up the new disposal on the lower part of the slide around the edge then it slides up to the higher point. I watched several videos but still couldn't figure where to hook "the teeth" on...what spot. Ladies if you are attempting this (my husband can't get down on the floor anymore), when putting the new disposal and ready to twist you will see on the upper flange that the metal slides from a lower to a higher spot so hook in the lower place and then slide to the higher with the allen wrench. Thank God that project is done!

Do you need to shut off the water first. Also, do you need plumbers putty and pipe tape?
@bensaysthings
@bensaysthings 3 года назад
You shouldn't have to shut off the water to your faucet since you're just removing the disposal. The water supply lines shouldn't come into play at all so you don't have to mess with them. Just make sure the kitchen faucet itself isn't on and the old garbage disposal electrical cord is unplugged. With regards to plumbers putty and pipe tape, you shouldn't need these if you're just removing and installing just the disposal. Plumbers putty is needed if you're installing the new metal flange to a the sink (which I didn't need to do in the video). Pipe tape or teflon tape is typically only needed for metal threads and if your setup is all PVC plastic piping then you shouldn't need it.

Hi there! Question: For electric purposes: Is replacing the disposal as easy as plugging in an out of the outlet... I’ve seen videos where the breaker box is involved.
@bensaysthings
@bensaysthings 3 года назад
If you unplug the garbage disposal power cord from the outlet before working on it (ie remove old, install new) then there should be no electrical power and you should be safe. Shutting off the power to the circuit break that's associated to the outlet wall is a bit overkill.

When you purchase these disposals, they'll be offered in a corded or un-corded version. Some homes come with Romex wires that hook up directly to the disposal and you have to pre-wire it to the unit before mounting it. The corded units obviously have the cord installed at the factory which can be plugged into a wall outlet like this video. It's something you should check before purchasing one. If you're wiring one directly to the home's electrical, you have to shut the power off at the electrical panel.

Any tips if old unit is stuck. I can’t get it loose and clamps that I turn are positioned awkwardly… Next to the screws so it’s hard to get good leverage
@bensaysthings
@bensaysthings Год назад
Not sure how your disposal is setup, but if you can get a large screw driver or breaker bar in between maybe you can pry or break loose the sliding flange? I don't necessarily recommend this though as it could damage the flange or deform it. This might be one of those instances where calling a plumber might be a good idea.

How do you remove the electrical plate when it does not come off by the method described?
@bensaysthings
@bensaysthings Год назад
I'm not sure what your old disposal electrical plate looks like, but typically there are a few screws that you should be able to access. If your old disposal is sealed up and doesn't have access to remove the cord then you might need to buy a new cord kit and install it on your new disposal or you could buy a new disposal with the cord already installed. Hope this helps. If all else fails and you still need to access or remove the electrical plate I would recommend hiring a plumber.

Yes, although not shown specifically that black hose I uninstalled from the old disposal (then reattached to the new one) with the hose clamp was coming from the air gap. There is another hose (not shown) that connects from the air gap to the dishwasher. The hose from the air gap to the dishwasher was a white hose in the video. You see it around minute 5:58 between the wall plug and the supply line knob.

This video by Michael Borders shows how to install a new electrical cord. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--bU3Sa2xha8.html It's what I've done also, it just happened that the one in my video already came with the cord installed. Good Luck I believe in you Chef! Also I would recommend getting a new replacement cable from Home Depot or Lowes as I've tried extracting the old cable from the old disposal before and usually it ends up damaged.

I can't do it. What could be wrong? I can't attach the inSinkErator, because I can't even get the parts lined -up for doing that.
@bensaysthings
@bensaysthings 3 года назад
If you have the exact same model as the one you're replacing then it should install the same way. One thing I did notice when installing the new one was that you do have to push the new disposal up against the sink flange a little bit to compress the gasket just a little. However it shouldn't be a lot of force. More likely your alignment might be off? If all else fails then it might be time to call in a plumber. Good on you for giving it try though most people don't even do that.

@@bensaysthings Thanks for answering so soon. (You're the first and only one so far) No, my model is not the same, but I think it should install the same way. @bensaysthings
@bensaysthings 3 года назад
@@quabledistocficklepo3597 That is strange. The diameter of the disposals should all be standard and the same especially if you're putting in a inSinkErator to replace an old inSinkErator. Hopefully it really is just a misalignment. Good luck!

also turn off the power from the electrical box too and turn the switch off for the disposal i'd imagine.
@bensaysthings
@bensaysthings 2 года назад
It's pretty safe to just turn off the switch for the disposal and unplug it. Cutting power from the breaker box is a little overkill if you're just going to uninstall the old and reinstall the new, but if you really want to be super duper safe then yes you could turn off power from the breaker box.

What is the small pipe above the other one for?
@bensaysthings
@bensaysthings 2 года назад
I think you're referring to the small port above the disposal outlet? If you are, that port is to connect to your dishwasher setup. More specifically your dishwasher has a relief hose that connects to an air gap (small cylinder looking thing usually located next to your kitchen faucet) and then another hose connects from the air gap to that "small pipe" on the disposal. I didn't mention it clearly in the video but if you don't have a dishwasher then don't punch out the plastic piece as I did in the video. If you already did, this isn't the end of the world as you can always seal it up with epoxy. Hope this helps.

@bensaysthings
@bensaysthings Год назад
Look around 2:22 in the video. Use the included allen wrench key by placing it into one of the loops of the existing disposal, then with one hand hold the flange above the disposal, turn counterclockwise (when viewed from the bottom). Around 6:09 I show the install so you get an idea of the moving parts. Hopefully this helps. You can do it, I believe in you.

I can't get to the Allen wrench holes it's blocked by those drop down screws.
@bensaysthings
@bensaysthings Год назад
A quick disclaimer - I'm not a professional plumber and what I suggest might not work or perhaps make things worse. You could perhaps use a flat head screwdriver to wedge between the ring and the drop down screws to try and get the ring moving enough to get the Allen wrench into the holes. The other option might be to call a plumber or handyman.

If the leak is under the sink basin but above the disposal then it might be a misalignment of the disposal to the sink flange or the seal of the flange to the sink basin needs to be replaced.

Typically if the hardware or seals are disturbed via removal of an old part in order to replace/install a new part I would replace the seal or hardware (if available). Although the new sink flange was available from the new disposal kit the existing flange wasn't disturbed and was perfectly fine. You certainly could replace it if you wanted, but I decided it wasn't worth the trouble.

OLD info. The new mounting ring does NOT spin like this video shows. Instead, it has a tab which "catches" and is supposed to enable you to spin the disposal while holding it with two hands. You have to push very hard upwards to interlock the mounting ring with the slid-up ramps on the mounting assembly. I hate it. A new video is needed to show how this is done.

If you installed the new disposal and it doesn't work I think it might be an electrical problem with the wall outlet. If the circuit breaker isn't tripped you could try plugging in a small appliance like an alarm clock to that socket to make sure it's working. If the socket is fine then there's a chance the new disposal you installed could be a dud (this is less likely but possible). If you installed the electrical cord yourself double check that the wiring is correct and there's no short. If all else fails it might be time to call a professional and get a plumber or handyman to take a look. Good luck. I hope it turns out to be something simple, but overlooked.

We want to see how it's done! Then, replacing the new disposal on the sink. Show us how you tighten it!
