Excuse my ignorance, but what prevents the leaf spring shackle from pivoting. Is it supposed to do that? I have an old datsun truck I want to lift a little bit and parts are non-existent, so you have to make your own. I want to make myself a pair of extended shackles, I just want to make sure I understand the workings of the suspension.
@Offroadfarm1
@Offroadfarm1 3 года назад
Yes the shackle does move. One end of a leaf spring needs to be able to move to allow the spring to flex. As a spring compress (flattens out) the distance between the 2 spring eyes must lengthen. As a spring droops the distance between the 2 springs eyes must shorten. The shackle is what allows this to happen. Thanks for watching and good luck on your project.

The shackle flip on those add about 4", the best thing for ride quality is to use actual shocks instead of the lift shock that Rancho and Skyjacker sell, those are only dampeners, they destroy ride quality. Use the factory length shocks off the mid to late 90's Chevy truck, like off a 96, on the front, use the factory rear off of like a 1977 Chevy truck, I have always gone a step up and used either Gabriel or Monroe overload shocks with the extra coils, night and day difference in ride quality

But it doesn't increase your ground clearance.. or are you intending to put on 60 inch tall tires???
@Offroadfarm1
@Offroadfarm1 4 года назад
Correct it does not increase your ground clearance, but it does give you more room to install bigger tires before you have to start trimming sheet metal. I don't think I'm going to try 60 inch tires but I would like to get 40's if the budget allows. Thanks for watching. I see you have some videos from Brockdell, I'm at the bottom of pitts gap.

Is this just to lift the truck? Bc I got this on my truck but I’m trying to go lower and I have a flip kit and a shackle flip with a stock shackles trying to go lower should I get the original shackles instead of the flip shackles?
@Offroadfarm1
@Offroadfarm1 3 года назад
Yes, the shackle flip is just lifting the truck. It is cheaper than new springs. If you want to go lower then you don't want to flip your shackles like I do in this video. If your shackles are already flipped then you could flip them back to the stock configuration and it will lower your truck. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching

@Offroadfarm1
@Offroadfarm1 5 месяцев назад
Only that it will change pinion angle. There are so many variables, it is hard for them so say for certain how much and if you will need to address it. Thanks for watching
@bradywilliams2666
@bradywilliams2666 4 года назад
What's your plan for addressing the pinon angle? The shackle flip rotates the pinion up a bunch. I would recommend cutting the stock leaf perches off. They are junk anyways. Replace them with an aftermarket anti wrap perch. I like to use Ruffstuff's. I have used Barne's 4x4 also. This way you can weld them exactly at the correct pinion angle. Using an aftermarket perch will also let you get back the 1" of wheelbase you lose with a shackle flip. Since they usually have 3 different holes for adjusting wheelbase.
@Offroadfarm1
@Offroadfarm1 4 года назад
I'm not sure about my pinon angle yet. I cut 22 inches out of the frame, installed the shackle flip and I currently don't have any of my drive train mounted. So for those reasons I haven't worried about it yet. I'm sure I'll have to adjust when the time comes. I'll check out the perches you mentioned. Thanks for watching

ive allways unbolted,loosened the u bolts,ground the saddle weld,,rotate diff up about 3",then re weld.re tighten bolts.done.that shackle flip is only good for show,,not good for travel,it reduces travel.better with 4" blocks,or& 2" leafs..all std ford gear.those drop brackets need a bar between them,as well..twist,not good..

I am wondering shakle flip is worth? ride quality or articulation?
@Offroadfarm1
@Offroadfarm1 3 года назад
My truck still isn't finished so I can't comment from personal experience. But ride quality shouldn't be effected very much, it's your same springs. Articulation will actually be slightly less than the stock shackle configuration. Check out this link www.offroaddesign.com/catalog/product/view/id/1757/s/shackle-flip-kits-for-73-91-gm-square-body-trucks/category/487/ Click on product info and they have answers to some common questions about shackle flips.
