In this video we'll create control circuitry for a DIY USB soldering station based on an Arduino Nano. This soldering station performs very well for a incredibly low price.

The schematics @2:02 is not consistent with what you did later. If the LED had been connected as shown in the schematics it would have been on all the time. You soldered the LED in parallel with the iron and not in parallel with the iron + MOSFET.
@CodeandSolder
@CodeandSolder 7 лет назад
Ooops, you are 100% right. Annotations are gone so I have no way to correct it now. Oh well, I'll add the corrected version to the description or something. I am quite surprised nobody noticed it before!
@ChupoCro
@ChupoCro 7 лет назад
I noticed because when I saw the schematics I memorized: 'OK, the LED is on all the time...', and then later in the video I saw it still works similar to the Hakko controller's LED (showing when the heater is on). But the difference in the schematics is more like a typing mistake - it does not count as an error. I find your video excellent in showing one possible algorithm for controlling the iron temperature with a microcontroller.
@CodeandSolder
@CodeandSolder 7 лет назад
To be honest the algorithm should be a full PID but to be even more honest the handle should be a something like a Hakko T12 for it to make sense. I'm surprised at how nice it works (in the next video) for how improvised it all is.

Awesome video, but funny, to make a soldering station, you need to take apart a soldering iron (1:05) with a soldering iron.
@CodeandSolder
@CodeandSolder 7 лет назад
I cut the wires later so you could do that. Soldering the cable on the other hand is a bigger problem.

so which came first, the chicken or the egg?
@CodeandSolder
@CodeandSolder 7 лет назад
The soldering iron, duh!
@timhortans
@timhortans 7 лет назад
The answer is quite simple and the answer lies in how evolution works. Evolution doesn't mean that individual of one species undergoes some sort of metamorphosis into another species, but rather during reproduction, genetic changes can occur (mutations, crossing over, etc) and thus those changes are passed on to the progeny. After enough changes, that aren't detrimental to the offspring, occur through generations eventually there is a point where the egg that produces an individual that is genetically unique from the previous generation to such an extent that it cannot successfully reproduce with individuals from that species, and thus we have a new species (the chicken). So, to answer your question, the EGG came first, it had to have come first, from where? it came from parents that are of different species.

I would recommend getting a JBC soldering iron handle and fitting cartridges for this project. They are expensive but basically the same thing, only the thermocouple is embedded in the tip of each cartridge. If a cartridge burns out or you need a different tip, swap it. JBC irons are designed to have interchangeable cartridges and the station detects what cartridge is chosen. Or you can get the full set, whole solder station and all for 1000 dollars or more. Personally, I have a chinese soldering station iron. The station is built into the iron's handle, LCD and controls and all. Only problem is, it's not temperature calibrated (you have to do that manually by putting in a temperature offset) and my thermometer is unreliable. It works though and packs a lot of power. It's a 80W iron.

Hi I have built one of of these units but had a lot of trouble with code it did not work at all well with the LCD. I have used a different library to get it to work. The problem is well know issue with the LCD only writing the first character. I have still got some tidying up to do as I have a slight issue with blinking cursor and also want to reduce the get temperature to only show 3digits as it jumps about to much. If any information is needed please let me know many thanks for the design and making the video as it is have enjoyed making it and is a nice video. Barry

Great project! The best type of cheap soldering iron, is the Hakko T12 chinese clone. The T12 Hakko clones, have the thermocouple in series with the heater. You can make a video showing the mods, to work with this type of tips? Good video!

I'm thinking about doing just that. A downside is those use mains voltage so I would have to be a lot more careful and probably not build it in the air :D

Not, the chinesse Hakko T12 clones, use the same voltage as the original: 24v. They can be powered from AC or DC voltage. They have a K-Type thermocouple, internally connected to the heater, in serie. Greetings.

It's cool that the MOSFET has on resistance of 8mOhms, but that's if the gate is being charged at 10V, but you're only charging it at about 5V, therefore the resistance won't be as low as you think. Also do you believe that the Chinese knockoff's will even get close to the datasheet resistance?
@CodeandSolder
@CodeandSolder 7 лет назад
Just measured, it's 170mOhm in practice. Considerably higher, true, but still low enough for them not to heat up noticeably.

I am trying to recreate your project, what are the values of the two resistors supposed to be?
@CodeandSolder
@CodeandSolder 7 лет назад
First o all I would use a better handle. That said the resistor values are not crucial. For the MOSFET anything between 1K and 50K ohm will be OK. For the LED 220 to 2k ohm. Plus the LED should be parallel to the handle, not on the power rails. If you have any more questions please ask.

I am wondering what the original wattage rating was of the iron. Are you now pushing the iron beyond its rating and causing an unsafe condition? Also, I am very impressed with your work. But, some have commented that they think your soldering skills are good. I watched the second video, with the soldering. I highly suggest that you take the time to improve your soldering skills. There are plenty of quality tutorials on YT, even NASA has soldering videos... No joke. I offer this constructively and hope I have not upset you. From what I have seen of your super intelligence, I know you can be a first-rate solderer...
@CodeandSolder
@CodeandSolder 6 лет назад
Thank you, I am always learning. The thing is I need to solder around the camera equipment and operate it at the same time, staying within the vision area. It's not easy! And yes, I am pushing the iron well out of the operating area and hoping that the thermal resistance between the thermocouple and heater is low enough it doesn't overheat. I'm making a more reasonable project (T12 based) right now.

I wonder if there now even is a reason to buy an expensive iron as you can just up the voltage
@CodeandSolder
@CodeandSolder 7 лет назад
+Lenny stepping up tha voltage has the side effect of increasing the difference in temperature between the heater and thermocouple. Thus above a certain level it will accelerate the wear of the tip. Plus the thermal capacity is still tiny so soldering anything big will be umcomfortable. Plus the higher the power the larger the oscillations will likely be, as the Kapton slows down heat transfer. So all in all this will always be worse than a proper Hakko or Weller.

Code and Solder What if use some more quality soldering iron for this?
@CodeandSolder
@CodeandSolder 7 лет назад
+Roman Nakurwia You would most likely need to change the transistor to triac + optoisolator as they usually run on mains voltage, but yes, this would totally work. Especially if you used a quality handle, there are Hakko ones on Aliexpress for a reasonable price and they have twmperature sensing inside the tip.

The official specification states 400C: www.dupont.com/content/dam/dupont/products-and-services/membranes-and-films/polyimde-films/documents/DEC-Kapton-summary-of-properties.pdf I have tested it multiple times above 300C and nothing happened to it. That and there are no real alternatives for a cheap hi-temp tape as far as I know.

It might be a better option to buy a prebuilt one but, some of us has the components like the Mosfet he mentioned(or a substitute) and other components required so It is up to you to decide whether to buy a prebuilt, or make one like in this video with your spare components you have in hand.
