Great seeing you think about parties and overbuild to anticipate that. Every year, we see news stories about a party where 20 or 30 people all show up at a house or apartment party and everybody is out on a deck never designed to handle that much weight. The deck fails and falls off the building and people are horribly injured or killed. Especially in rentals, residents have no concept of load capacity. All they care about is cramming in all their friends. Interior floors also collapse under those conditions as residential homes are not designed to be event spaces. Obviously a tragedy is very unlikely with your low deck but it is still very good to see thinking about it and making darn sure there will never be an issue with the deck.

Andrew, your deck build reminds me of a small deck I built several years ago. I way over built it using screws, nails, bolts and construction adhesive. When I built it, I never intended for it to ever be disassembled and removed. However as time went on, we eventually sold the house and the new owner didn’t want the deck as they planned on adding on to the house and part of the closing deal was to remove the deck. Boy was it a tough job to tear it out. But the deck was rock solid and I am confident it would have lasted for many years before it would’ve begun to degrade.

I just rebuilt my deck and went with composite as well. I also used a scrap piece (2x10) as a jig to set my joist hangers. That work’s really well for being able to just drop your joists in. However it does create a different problem that I didn’t think about. Because the lumber you get these days is not consistent, I had many joists that were set high because my jig board was an 1/8 to a 1/4 “ shorter than most of my joists. I had to go back and string line the joists and use a planer.
@TKCL
@TKCL Год назад
That does occasionally happen, I just take a small amount off the bottom with a jig saw.
@gcampbell83
@gcampbell83 Год назад
That is a lot of work for having fun, But you do it once right and you do not have to do it again. You just enjoy the new deck for the rest of your life. That deck will outlast the pool. Andrew, I enjoy all of your content. I’ve been in construction for many, many years. Just want to offer an option for future reference on the angled portion against the pool. Instead of ledgering , you can also do what I call pressure blocking . Meaning, attaching a block between two joist against the header board , allowing you to screw/nail through the side. Hope this made sense. Great job!
@TKCL

Awesome videos on the deck build! I did the same with the flashing tape on all the framing that water could stand as well. One thing I noticed that I wanted to give you a heads up on based on my bad experience. I'm not sure if your pool walls are painted steel, aluminum, or stainless, but I had rock up against my partially buried pool and the movement of the walls rubbing against the rock scratched the paint off and started to rust everything below the surface. This was within the first year. Just wanted to give you a heads up on that.

I know of at least 3 different types of hangers made to accommodate your angles. They do not have a bottom , but by seating your boards on the ledge then bend the angles for each side of the board and nail or screw them. They also make screws that are stronger than your nails and they make them that slide in a cartridge for your screw gun. I went on a tour of the Deltec homes and part of it was in the construction area and pointed out the strength of the new screw framing system which are hurricane rated.
@TKCL
@TKCL Год назад
Yes over the last few years they have started offering structural screws, most lack the composition for good shear strength. They are quite brittle. I couldn't find the bendable Joist hangers anywhere.

@patyounger
@patyounger Год назад
Hey Andrew. Look into the Floor Edge Beam calculations. You are running a compound load on that beam. Not sure of your clear span, 6’? Length of joist from patio to main deck, 8’? For a clear span of #1 Southern Pine of 10’ with 10’ joist span requires 2-2x12 with a specific nail pattern or bolted. I know you aren’t 10’x10’ but you do have to add joists going to pool since they are also attached to the Floor Edge Beam. I would just notch a 6x6 and throw it under the beam and land it on a paver or something. Looking good though!
@TKCL
@TKCL Год назад
You mean the ledger board that's in between the two different sections of deck? That's very easy to add a 6x6 on a paver as you mentioned. All other sections are about 5 ft 6 in, that particular one's a little over 7 ft.
@TKCL

Should also mention all other sections have two 2x8s as well. Very strong, but I see the potential failure point you mentioned, I'll add another 6x6.
