We all know that Misha from Periphery and Buster from Humanity’s Last Breath stole ALL their ideas from Meshuggah…but which alien planet did Meshuggah come from? Are the members of Meshuggah actually symbiotes that feast on the brains of humans with their ultra technical groove oriented metal? Find out the answers to all your deepest, darkest djent questions here in this video! I cover a brief history of djent and how it formed out of groove and thrash metal and is also a close cousin to NÜ METAL. Then we get into the dirty details about what exactly to do with your hands when you’re just getting into metal guitar playing. This is a long one, so use the chapters to your advantage to skip around and find the parts of the video most applicable to you. As always, if you have questions, don’t hesitate to leave a comment or ask a question. It’s officially guitar study time, so get out your notebooks and your metronomes, let’s turn science and reality on it’s head!

Just wanted to note that the term "djent" was coined by Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah), not Misha. He has mentioned it multiple times in interviews, however, so I can see where the confusion might come from. Nice video!

Not only does this method and technique work well for guitar, it is also applicable to playing bass using a pick. My picking speed has increased exponentially while playing in good meter using a metronome.Another factor to consider with bass is using some forearm exercises for building stregth and endurance. Ok I'm saving this video for when I learn guitar lol. In the meantime, somebody care to chime in on something for me? The game Street Fighter 5 (SF5/SFV) has some music that has Djent elements but is also pretty melodic. I've never heard anything like it and I'm trying to find more or see if there's a subgenre out there that sounds similar. The three tracks that are main examples of what I'm referring to are "SFV Main Menu Theme", "SFV Arcade Edition Menu Theme" and "SFV Ring of Pride Alternative". Figured I'd ask here and at the very least hopefully whoever looks these up enjoys them too.

Been playing metal since the early 90's but the newer progressive metal kind of blows my mind. I understand the music theory behind it but the progressions and tunings are still eluding me. I can play Dream Theater type stuff but Periphery, Tesseract, Caligula's Horse and other bands seem just a little out of my grasp in regards to the technique they use.

When you play djent do you drop d tune the guitar?
@DrewCreal
@DrewCreal 5 месяцев назад
There's a lot of different tunings you can use for Djent or modern progressive metal. Meshuggah famously tubes down a half step with their 8 strings, Archspire plays in this tuning EAEADGBE, and I believe Tosin and Javier from Animals as Leaders play with the drop D string relationship so their tuning would be EBEADGBE. For the music that I play, most of the time I'm in standard 8 string tuning or the Animals as Leaders tuning. The sky is the limit though, you can tune and set up the guitar however you'd like to.

@justinwilliams721
@justinwilliams721 2 года назад
1st off, just want to say that the techniques are solid and needed for anyone that wants to play metal. That being said, there were too many techniques missing. This was a good metalcore or thrash lesson but you cant just tune to F, play metallica, and call it djent. Where are all the odd time signatures, polyrhyms, contrasting rhythms, dissonant chords, and weird arpeggios? Very good tutorial for someone who is learning or wants to learn how to play old school thrash, hardcore, or metalcore though. Again, not knocking the technique or even the delivery, just sayin.
@DrewCreal
