DJI F550 Hexacopter Box Drop

I have mounted a simple dropping device on my multirotor, and these are the first tests of the device.
The first item dropped is a teddybear, and the second item is a high altitude ballooning payload box with cameras and sensors.

Equipment:
- Frame: DJI F550
- Gyro: DJI Naza v2 with GPS
- Gimbal: DJI Zenmuse H3-2D
- Camera: GoPro Hero3, Black Edition
- Radio: Futaba T14SG with receiver R7008SB
- Battery: Li-Po 4S (14.8V), 6200 mAh
- Motors: Stock F550 (DJI 2212/920)
- Esc: Stock F550 (DJI ESC 30 amps OPTO)
- Propellers: Stock DJI 10"

As with your drone parachute test, would it be wise to use a short length of plastic pipe to pack the parachute inside. But leave the lines free to drag down the chute, once your release servo tripped open. Not only would your chute be held inside an aerodynamic cylinder (no drag effects in flight), you could actually create a larger chute canopy (or 3) to create full aerodynamic breaking & softer landing of the box & contents, upon hitting the ground/water. You may expose the box to the risk of windshear, BUT the contents WILL be safely delivered.

Stefan Ekstam here's a TIP / two / three: Make a small hole in the top of the fabric, fold the ends over a thin, circular piece of wire and glue / saw together. Might also be worth looking for an old sleeping bag and using that fabric, or fabric form an old tent. You might also like to try a longer lead from the object being dropped. Best of luck with the next project!

Man I'd like to do a high altitude balloon project as well! Problem is I live at the coast, on a peninsula, meaning there's a very good chance it would come down over water... Oh, and I don't have any money.

Saying the box has a small chute is quite the understatement. Also, was it made out of a table cloth? Nice work, for the future I believe using a trio of chutes are more stable...if you can keep them untangled

The parachute was originally a part of a military flare. It is quite small, but still fulfills its purpose. The faster the box can fall the better, as long as it does not break on impact. Since it will fall around 100 000 ft, a larger parachute would make it drift unnecessarily far. A trio of chutes would be more stable, but heavier. I will try this small chute with my first high altitude balloon, hopefully at the end of this month.

uh i think you need a wider parachute lol its the same with the drone parachute it needs way more surface area...more surface area=more air drag

It was a bit involved, actually. The first step is to record the actual altitude data. I used the Arduino-based APM 2.6 autopilot (store.3drobotics.com/products/apm-2-6-kit-1) to record the flight data. Then I exported that data to a KML file (developers.google.com/kml/documentation/). Finally I imported the KML file into Google Earth and used Fraps (www.fraps.com/) to record the movie.
