DJI F550 Hexacopter crash after failed loop attempt, burning LiPo battery 

Dear Stefan I do enjoy your very peaceful upside down close ups of grass and leaves. I am a bit confused why you need to go to the expense of a multi rotor to put a camera upside down in grass. Anyway keep up the odd-angle photography. I enjoy it. It could take off.

To perform a nice loop, try punching the throttle while vertical, lowering the motors speed loads so they just about spin, then full right/left/forward/back until your vertical again. Then re-apply throttle.

your video quality was very good and the slow mo excellent! Good to see them fly apart in slow mo to see what actually happend and how. I have incoporated crumble zones into the four arm ends to asorb shockwave and perserve motors and mounts. Blades are disposable and manufactured as such. Roll-cage for or dome for the board is crucial as well to prevent electroincs damage, And mini shock absorbing monts for board if you do not have already. Turingy sk450 mod quad hit rocks at 35 m.p.h. on a arm, blades gone crumple zone collapsed up to half inch of motor, frame un-damaged. It works after second crash, new blades and off we go again.

as a pilot of fixed and helicopters, question..... do you retain power during the loop maneuver? the height definitely was not enough, but for aircraft, ( as i have zero knowledge with multi-rotor drones ) you never want to be under power inverted or diving. full power during initial maneuver start, but in the inverted aspect, dump power and gradually apply as you come out of the maneuver back into normal flight. the reason why is, inverted flight ( especially for helicopters that can do loops ) with power and collective applied, will nearly 5-10 fold the lift to the ground, throwing the helicopter at a fatal level of speed which would fracture or completely rip off rotor blades when pulling out of the loop. to counter that, during the inverted aspect of the maneuver, pull back power, and let it maneuver under that thrust. dont keep it under full lift power.

Next time you try a loop, take the gimbal off. It try's to counter the action of the multirotor by staying level to a point and slows it down a bit. Great try, you've more balls than me. :)

I see you have the 3+ black, same as me. Have you considered running 720p superview in 120fps? makes for much better slow mo editing in GoPro studio or After Effects

I know this is an older video, but here are some tips. When first starting to learn rolls and flips, its best to gain altitude like you did, but when you go to actually do the flip or roll, punch the throttle first, to give it some upward momentum. Then as you begin the roll, drop your throttle to around 20ish% (do not cut the throttle 100%) while doing the flip/roll. As you level off, throttle up again. It also helps to increase your rates, which will increase how fast it will flip/roll. You will then also want to add in some expo so its not too twitchy during simple maneuvers.

did you forget to throttle down whilst upside down? Seems though you are right, not enough height. Considering it's slow pitching speed there was a second or so not in powered flight. assuming your hex didnt reach terminal velocity, which it doesnt seem so cause looks like it is accelerating towards ground the entire time. find time it took to loop and then calculate that it is in free fall the whole time so 1/2t^2*9.8m/s^2 = altitude you need to complete the loop.

Hey buddy, love the enthusiasm, but a little tip to doing a flip/roll is to drop the throttle when the machine is at a 90 degree angle to continue its momentum then catch yourself with the rotational mass of the motors gyroscopically force balancing it back in control.. More inertia the better

For flip and roll you better get mini blackout or spider hex...with naze32

The propellers when flipped propelled the hexacopter towards the ground at a faster speed then when it was turning. Cut out your engines when upside down or reverse the propeller control stick.

Lol, you have to commit... the first time I did a roll/ loop, I was terrified. I was actually able to do it the first time out, but then the 2nd and 3rd times broke arms. Im not sure if its the same with bigger quads, I would assume so, you could lower the throttle just to the point before the motors stop spinning, at the same time go full pitch/roll. thats to do a nice soft loop, to do a fast/ tight loop, I simply commit and go full roll/roll

Another 30 feet of altitude and you had it nailed :)

sell this heaxacopter for a hs110d they can flip only at ten feet or lower! and they have protection guards that if it crashes it will just break they guards. not the propellers and its super easy to put them back it takes 10 seconds

its really annoying I just got an amazing new quadcopter, the biggest one I have ever owned, but the weather is to bad to fly it. (I'm in England so I will most likely have to wait till summer or a rare sunny day).

A reason why you screwed up that loop was because you had no vertical velocity when you began the maneuver, just hovering. When you try it again you should do it while gaining altitude.

a loop is not that difficult u just have to take it above 20m for attempting a loop and make sure u have sufficient power in ur drone

the start was ok.but there was TO MUCH WIND !! i got a hexacopter,80cm in diameter,and first thing i did,was CHANGING THE BATTERIES !! from 7.2v 1600ma ,, to 12v 4800ma !!!!! NOW I CAN DO LOOPING ,WHILE A TORNADO KISS ME................................... give ur hexacopter more power,and u can do it.

This kills me, I'm mean sorry for your crash but everyone gets these and rely on gps flight. But can barely fly them in manual mode. You should be able to scream around the feild before trying flips and rolls. Oh well, keeps the small parts people in business.

I'm here to tell ya. If I was your F550 and you bashed me in the ground from 1000M then again trying to do a flip, the next time you put me in the air, I'd be flying off to China. The F550 is a camera platform not a smack 3D platform. You should build yourself a 250 to play with.

And don't stand right next to a lipo battery that is smoking...they can/do explode you know? Seriously man, you need your head banging...

I suggest you to study aerodynamics, flights techniques and especially aircraft crash and safety history. You will spend time but save money. A lot of mistakes have already been made with aircrafts during the past 100 years and it's worth learning from it. For example, you would have learned the you need to master at any moment your lift and anticipate any behaviour of your airplane or flying device... I watched your video and was waiting for he height rising moment to at least 300 feets aaaaaaaaaand it didn't happened. As soon as you get a 90° angle, you lose your lift and start falling, then you go 180° and your drone litteraly propels itself to the ground. Remember this : physics have no mercy. Think 10 times before.
