The DJI digital HD FPV system works best at 700 mW max output power. But some regions are limited to 25 mW. So what kind of range can you expect from the DJI FPV system at 25 mW vs. 700 mW. And how does that compare to an analog transmitter?

ITs not DJI bar that is high, it is the rest of companies whose bar was below marian trench level. FPV was stuck in 1970 before them.

3 years later and this video is still as relevant as ever, thanks! Watching the comparison of both DJI 25mW/700mW vs Analog really puts into perspective how much clearer the DJI image quality is. Analog just isn't very clear at all, but it's what I've been using for 4+ years now. One of my BFFs has a DJI set up, and it's great that you've put in the contrast between DJI digital images vs analog, but I was also surprised that 25mW DJI could go as far as it does. I fly at 400-600mW on analog, and if I go behind any object at all, it pretty much cuts out completely. This video solidifies my opinion that I do need to make the switch to DJI or digital if I want that clear flying experience. It seems like the compression of the video data in real time, and the filtering on noise/channels that DJI provides is much better than Analog. I also live in a populated area, so the radio interference of 2.4 & 5.8 GHZ signals is redic, which is where that fine tuned filtering of data & compression really comes in to play with DJI. It just seems better (assuming the slight latency increase doesn't affect your flying style)

And we all fly under 30dbm here in the US. Funny thing is, I don't think anyone realizes that limit. They only realize that they don't have a HAM license( which we don't need with the DJI btw).

Yes....we do, you see my done officer its actually really small and flying 40m way. It's quite slow that is why it's taking some time to get back

rcrdps I have been flying and driving rc for 15 years (although this is the firs year I’m getting into fpv) and I’ve never heard of a dbm limit so I think you’re right =)

@@travispratt6327 When I was reading stuff on the DJI, I think I saw the FCC symbol somewhere. So I looked for it on my goggles. It's on the bottom in very small letters and you have to bounce a light off of it to read it. I googled the ID, and skimmed the FCC testing procedure. In that, they cite the "code" that they are following, and there is a 30dbm limit for "mobile" stuff in the 5.8ghz range. DJI appears to have designed to be right up against that limit, and it's certified. So if you're in the US, and you run it stock at 700mw, it's as legal as a WiFi router from BestBuy. That confidence can be useful for certain environments. Unfortunately, the knowledge works against you too,....

rcrdps I briefly looked into it, i found conflicting information so I gave up... my understanding is the limit is inputting 30dbm to an antenna, which if you do calculations comes out to roughly 1000mw which is what everyone says is the limit for transmitting analogue signals anyways, and higher than any of my equipment.

Honestly, if having to put the module on the side of the strap vs inside the goggle is a dealbreaker for you then it sounds like you just dont really want the system.

OK, I think I've watched all of your DJI FPV review videos. Really nice work. Question for you: I'm wanting to start out in FPV this autumn for fixed wing flying. I have the budget for the DJI system, and I have no FPV gear at all. Should I take the DJI plunge or start with an analog system?

The DJI system is amazing. I think the biggest thing is whether you plan to fly with others or not. If you get it, you won't be able to view others' feed, and they won't be able to view yours.

I would want an osd, just a center mark would be helpful. Brand new and glad I hadn’t ponied up For hdo’s or anything yet... time is on my side. Keep practicing in the sim stashing cash and I think HD is in my future 😎

Crossfire has longer range. But DJI controller has as much range as DJI goggles, and some would argue that's all you need.

25 looks like it's be perfectly usable in a race environment, and 700 looks like it's be great for long range stuff with the right antenna combo.

Love the DJI FPV goggles until yesterday. My pair of goggles is getting black screens for video, so no backlight in goggles. Worked amazingly well for 29 days. Any ideas from anyone?

Considering getting a DJI HD system, maybe in the spring. Hopefully a v2 comes out that takes an analog module. Also, would like to see what Fatshark comes up with for HD before I decide. One question - how hot did the air unit get when using 700mw?

It gets very hot. But if you're flying it's okay. It definitely needs airflow.

I wish you would have did one more pass in 25mw focus mode to see the difference in range as well. More then likely anyone needing the extra range would probably be in focus mode.

looks like i might give up box goggles for a pair of these, ps. i saw a soft target with micro eagle much easier than they showed up on hd footage.... so, that slightly cartoony over saturated reality has its good points

That was impressive. Hardly any breakup. Was watching the edges and only in the last quarter of the vid did I notice and breakup. Still too expensive to justify though. The full package on a kwad from scratch is still like buying a Mavic Pro 2

@Joshua Bardwell Hi J i need help and i think you are the only one that can solve my problem, im having issues with DJI fpv digital controller please help.i already refunded 1 and now i got another 1 with the same problem. the problem is related to endpoint of sticks. in the one i refunded i was having the problem when i full press right roll the software detect full left and now i have on pitch. is someonelse having that issue on gimbal? i tried my friend's controller and is having that exact issue on throttle.when he go on full throttle and reach the endpoint the software detect 0 throttle…is possible to set a dead zone in the end point area?

Joshua, hi! Tell me how convenient it is to use this system with glasses? I have myopia "-3.5" Fatshark glasses - I use corrective lenses. And here, how? I see that you wear a helmet right on the glasses. It's comfortable? So can you fly for a long time?

BIG QUESTION: Are you using the DJI TX or a Taranis for control? Can you use a Taranis for control and (if possible) which would you "choose" to use?

It’s interesting but something I thought might be going on was mentioned, seeing a GoPro like view may look fantastic but might actually hinder how well you can fly due to na overload of information. Our analogue FPV “simplifies” things for us, maybe it’s something you can get used to though.

I was taking with my optometrist about fatigue caused by impaired vision. She was saying if you dont wear glasses when you should your brain has to do a lot more to process and make sense of what you are seeing, which makes you tired quicker. This seems consistent with what ive experienced. Im sure this would also apply to looking at low res analog video feeds, if your brain is having to work harder simply interpreting the image, you probably have less mental capacity for other things. Would make an interesting experiment...

Nice test. Just like the guys said there is almost too much information in the goggles. I have well over 50 packs on it and still get distracted by how pretty the sky is or how far I can see.

Jason Bartlett one of the features i like best is the screen size settings. for fast focused flights i choose 70-80% screen size. for slower explorative flights i go 100% screen and maybe wide.

Can you use these DJI goggles with analog signals? Meaning can they be used with micro quads or would you still need a pair of analog goggles for those? I know the quads wouldn’t be able to hold the DJI hardware, but could these goggles show analog video?

The DJI goggles do not have an analog receiver built in. They accept an AV input from a ground station though.

I googled 25 VS 700mW for European union rules but I can't find any information about it. I know it's late and the video is kinda old now. Do you know why we can't fly 700mW?

Actually looked MUCH better at 25mW than i expected, i wonder why others made it seem like it was unflyable at 25mw. i like that you flew with focus mode off, i really wanted to get a sense of signal degradation at distance. i expected 700mW to be fine, but 25mW held up some what decently. Does the DVR exactly match what you saw in the goggles? i wonder what is the BIT rates on DVR/Air Unit recordings, dont think i have heard any one discuss that. thanks for the follow up review, i did learn something today!! :P

DVR is pretty close to what you see in the goggles. I would have to side-by-side to be sure. But remember, DVR takes out the freeze-frame skips.

Joshua I know im 3 years late but I'm new to FVP and I really like when you go into specifics. Most other youtubers just throw around 25mW 700mW bla bla but don't even explain what they are talking about. Is it a goggle, a battery? what does it look like, where it is? what is the range difference... etc I think you explained some of that much better than others out there but I would suggest just lowering the learning curve a bit at the start of each video so that newcomers can know what is being addressed..

25 mW vs. 700 mW refers to the output power of the video transmitter on the quad. More power = more range and penetration. In general, 4x the power equals 2x the range in open space. So 25 x 4 = 100 x 4 = 400 mW would be two doublings of range, or 4x the range. 1600 mW would be another doubling of range after that, or 8x the range. So the difference between 25 mW and 700 mW is between about 4x and 8x the range.

It is possible that there is a firmware hack for the modules and force 700mw. I have a DJI FPV drone and I saw that there is a hack to the firmware that allows you to choose signal modes and unlock height limits. In my case I am from Argentina and I don't need to unlock it

one of the first vids i saw on this dji system they did a range test. they flew it alongside a pickup truck down a straight flat road, while the people in the truck talked to the pilot via cell phone. major degredation around 2km and i think they called it at about 2.5km because it was getting too bad to fly and he actually hit the side of the truck.

Its easy achievable with a fpv plane. I saw somebody who achieved 6.3km ~4 mi with stock antennas. I think you can get around 3-4km with a Quad. This System is so next level 👌🏼

Well, if you don't want to use 700mW because it is illegal, you'd have to fly 25mW on analog aswell, as you can't legally transmit more with that either. My Problem with the digital systems is the price, way to frickin expensive for my budget...

I'd like to see someone sit down and make a reference table of what is allowed/not allowed in different countries. if there is one country where 700mW analog is allowed but DJI is 25mW, then his caveat holds. For Canada we get the full TX power for both, but less channels.

It’s only expensive if you already spent your money on fat shark hdo, crossfire, etc. like I did, however if you’re new to fpv have the money and want digital then this is the way to go. Too bad you can’t fly whoops without the analog equipment.

Shame the goggle DVR doesn't seem to record the OSD, it would be helpful to see the latency information and so on. I assume they want the goggle DVR to be good enough to use in videos, but surely that's what the on board SD card is for?

Absolutely! Please write them. They do seem to read and respond, so maybe if enough of us request it, they'll do it. Also ask for fan control, and usb to HDMI.

Personally I'd prefer to have the OSD information embedded in the file, but not in the video stream, anyone who wants the OSD information could use a program to read the data and burn it in.
