DJI Mini 2 - in some serious SNOW. Can it handle a snow storm in the Swiss Alps?

Fly in snow at your own risk, as well as temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius. It's silly. I do it because I like to test these things out for you and I've flown drones in so many different conditions I'm pretty aware of their limits. Be careful, be considerate.
This was filmed in the Swiss Alps, and yes, the first part was in a snow storm, the second part was when the snow storm gave me a little rest.
Flying a drone in the snow can be dangerous, please be aware of your surroundings and your aircraft.

@@PhillipSkraba I purchased a DJI Mavic Air 2 over the holidays and its opened a whole new photographic realm, it’s like having a camera with wings...I have had a Nikon P1000 super zoom 125X which is a blast to use, but the Drone is even more fun. This had me laughing a few seconds in with that poor mini sliding off the car 🤣, then you dropped her in the snow🤣. What a little trooper the Mini 2 is, absolutely brilliant footage 👍

haha, the car hood was funny! The drop was because my fingers were so frozen I actually couldn't feel it 😂 Yes, the Mini 2 is a super trooper!

Big blizzard hitting my small town in midwest US tonight. I work midnights as a nurse and keep looking outside seeing the snowfall and can't WAIT to get some cool shots with my mini 2 tomorrow as the sun comes up with I get off work. Thanks for the video to keep hold me over til then, amazing stuff as always!

Actually, we're still here today, and the weather was a lot colder and the snow was a lot worse, so we had a ton of fun!!

My comment is this Philip, I think you are an excellent drone pilot and film maker. But most of all you are a great teacher! Make sure you keep the batteries warm before take off.

@@Relic5150 Sure, even after crashing it and breaking off the rear arm, superglueing it back, it works like a charm. I was back in the snowstorm two days ago filming a new one for the Mini 2 and Air 2S.

I've flown mine in - 20 celsius without any issues, even the flight time seems to be largely unaffected.

I flew in - 4 celsius but quite humid air, and after 10 minutes of flying i had "Motor overheating" warning or something. When i eventually got the drone back safe, the motors were super toasty, and the props were covered in ice (it had built on like a "long icetap" in the direction of spinning). That was a scare, but a good lesson! :)

I've flown the Mini 1 over a lake at -12 deg C and with wind gusts above 22mph. It withstood the harsh situation very well. The stability was impressive. Watching your video gave me more confidence in the device, both the Mini 1 and 2. Great footage though.

Yes, that's totally normal when you face the sun, that's part of using the PL. I get that too sometimes, I cut it.

Thanks for the video Philip! I got a dji mini 2 for Christmas, and it is very cold where I live. I use gloves when I fly, and instead of tapping the screen to take off, I find it much easier to pull in the 2 sticks to start the motors and go from there. Never had the guts to fly in the snow though!

I took the battery out the other day and had a look at the internals. Such a simple looking setup for a tiny machine that can do amazing things. Good to know it can handle a bit of moisture whilst out and about. Still amazed at how good the Mini2 really is!

Hey brother I'm a beginner I just bought the mini a week ago. Flew it maybe 5 time now first drone man very excited more like stoked. I've been watching your RU-vid channel and it gave me a lot confidence but still gotta practice a lot more. I got the up n down move pretty good as well as the forwards n backwards move. Whoa...I was just wandering this as it was snowing today in MN, U.S. mine fell in the snow and acted strange until it dried out - very surprised it could get that wet in your video...how did you dry it and anything weird happen afterwards? Thanks, love the footage!

Stunning shots as always! You're using ND8 in such cloudy conditions as I see. I guess it would be like ND16 to ND32 if there were the sun, right? Would ND8+PL work also good in your conditions?

Thank You! Yes, I had ND8 and ND16 on most of these shots. ND32 if the sun is out, sometimes ND64 if it's a tropical country. I used the hybrids when the sky was blue just to pop it a little.

I found out recently that my Mini 2 didn't like flying in freezing fog, only had it up for a minute or two before getting a motor error, brought it back in and the rotors had a fair amount of ice in them!

Mike, that’s exactly what happened to me with the warning in freezing fog, then after 10mins it dropped (but wasn’t very high, its all good now!). Shweet video again Philip!

I’d have used an hairdryer as soon as possible to avoid problems in the future. I’d have concerns about corrosion. But the footage is amazing, thanks for flying under these circumstances 😉

Corrosion would be if you get salt water on it, snow is fine. A hairdryer would be a little too hot, also in a car in the Alps hard to find, so the windscreen heater works perfectly. I'm honest not really that bothered about it, I'm more about the shot, I want that shot, that's my mission, and I hope the tech lets me. This time it did, thanks to this crazy little drone!

I've flown the P3P quite a few times, and I've got to be honest, the way this little guy flies and shoots is mind-blowing and I've already heard of quite a few people dropping their P3P and picking up one of these 😂 It's a crazy little drone, but it feels like a paper aeroplane compared to the P3P so you'd have to get used to that.

Nice. I took my tiny whoop out in a blizzard here in Maine, at night, to FPV it one evening about five years ago. It was a hoot. To come in to land, I had to find the light coming out of our rear garage door and basically aim for it, coming in hot and bouncing off my wife’s car. Then I did it again. Video quality much different though :-)

I have the Mini 2 for everyday flying, even here it was fine, I have the 2 Pro for serious sea winds as the Air 2 just couldn't handle them without flying completely sideways. All are excellent drones if you know their limitations and how to get the most out of them!

@@PhillipSkraba yea I could only afford to fly have one drone so I opted for the air 2. I was flying on top of a mountain here in Maine and almost lost the mini but I should have known better. The air 2 def struggles too it just has the extra wait and umph to get through the rough stuff. I found the air 2 a little smoother to fly as well. As I have 2 dslr cameras I'd love to have a real drone camera with lenses that are interchangeable as they look so much better once you see the difference. Did you see the new sony drone?

Yes, the Sony looks great! I have a Matrice 600, that's pretty fun but a lot of work to get off the ground and needs two people to work it.

Another impressive video, Phillip. Great job. It’s amazing how harsh winter is when at ground level, but from a drone’s eye view, things appear so calm and peaceful. Ok, I am convinced now that filters are a necessity. I live in a climate that has four seasons one different from the other. Have you ever made a video to teach how to most effectively use all of the filters? Would love to know. Just subscribed to you so thanks for all the education and tips/tricks. Super appreciate all you do.

Which ND filter did you wind up using? I'm finding it challenging to stick to the 180 rule when shooting sky and ground. One is usually exposed correctly and the other is blown out or under exposed. Your videos are amazing and have really helped me out.

I used the Freewell ND16 here, expose for the sky, you can bring a lot of shadows back in post but not blowouts.

Awesome video Phillip. I'm jealous of the Mini 2 and I have a Mavic Air 2! I think it will be perfect for hiking and outdoor activities and I know it flies at 4000m so it would be great for the Himalayas etc. I've seen videos where you can use solar chargers to recharge the mini's batteries which is a game changer.
