I've flown my mavic mini 2 here in finland many times in temps lower than -10 celsius. It works perfectly and I haven't had a single issue with it. It hasn't even given me any warnings about the low temperature. Sometimes I check the battery temperature from the dji fly software after flying for around 5 minutes, and it usually always stays around 20 degrees celsius or little lower so i feel pretty confident flying it around even in freezing cold winter weathers. It truly is a beast of a drone and winter in this time of the year produces such amazing videos and pictures with my drone.
Thanks for the shout out! Those electric hand warmers have been invaluable for me this winter. I needed up picking several more up a couple for my bag/batteries and a couple for my hands! Cheers from a fellow northerner. stay warm!
Thanks for the tips on flying my DJI Mini 2 in cold weather. The part about keeping the batteries warm will be especially useful. I just received my first drone, and want to try it out but have been hesitant due to the cold.
All good tips. Don't forget that flying over snow is a tough assignment for the downward sensors and can cause problems as flies close to the ground. Use of a landing pad is recommended....I am not a fan of hand catches for landing....easy to cut your fingers and NEVER catch and invert the drone to shut off the motors. That puts a strain on the motors and messes up your IMU calibration so you will have to do it again or risk the drone getting confused and getting lost or crashing.
thanks I was asking myself today about that. few weeks ago I flew first time through fog and in cold temperatures about 7°C but at least I was able to be longer in the air and I was surprised how cold my drone was. Always thought low temperature is usually good for batterys
I have found that disposable vinyl gloves are effective protection in cold weather. Cheap, available, and allow use of controls. Discovered accidentally while working on cars in freezing weather.
Excellent tips, thanks for sharing! Especially about the photography gloves...I didn't even know they were a thing! 😂 I haven't tried flying while in my car yet, but definitely will soon.
I just got my mini 2 last week. I'm in Oregon and it's been below freezing and windy but I've had the opportunity to get some air time. I'm regards to cold fingers, I have tested all the best gloves as a survival instructor and someone who lives outdoors most of the year. Black Nitrile gloves. Trust me. They are non porous so the don't allow heat to excape. They are snug, thick, water resistant and wind resistant. They are also touch sensitive for phones and tablets. They cost next to nothing.
DJI also recommend that when you first lift off let the drone hover for a min or so, this will allow the battery to warm up to operating temperature before using.. You also have to think about condensation when you have finished flying, you don't want water on all those nice warm electronics. Also never charge a very cold battery warm it up above zero degrees (basic battery knowledge)..
You mentioned the humidity problem and you are so wright ! Everyone has experienced fogged up glasses when you enter in a home, the same thing is happening to your drone, all over the electronic board ! The solution is put your in sealable plastic bag and put the drone in it BEFORE entering in a house. Let the drone warm before opening the bag. It is the same logic for all your electronic devices. Canadian advice ….
Thanks for the great video about the possible problems for flying mini2 in low temperature environment. I just got mine in the Christmas and fly it several times. It flied well than I expected: stable and moved properly. I just have a question. Do you have any suggestion about flying in a snow? I mean, not only under cold weather, but also in a heavy snow. Is it in risk flying in a heavy snow and how to avoid the risk? Any accessories or method to protect mini 2 in a snow?
In February I'm going on an expedition to ICELAND and of course I wanted to take my 2s drone, but I have serious concerns, because it can be even -15 degrees there.
Hand catch is always risky. Use a landing pad is safest. One thing to avoid if you do a hand landing....don't invert the MINI II to turn off the motor. That puts a lot of strain on the motors and will mess up your EMI calibration so will need to do it again before flying. If you have to hand land use left throttle pushed down to landing mode but have it above your hand and let it gently land upright in your hand and it will turn off the motors as it lands on your hand. Again though...,.that is risky and I avoid that at all costs.
@@extremelydave a cold battery on a hot humid day would cause condensation but winter air is dry and a warm battery is not going to cause condensation. It’s a battery not hot breath. Does a hot heater core cause condensation on your cold windshield when you turn your defroster on? No it defogs it just like the battery will defog the drone. Remember, you need a source of humidity to cause condensation.
Hi Shawn, thanks for the tips! Struggling a bit with mine as when I fly in cold temperatures, the camera gets foggy and of course the footage is totally unusable. Is this a common issue or is it just my drone? Thanks!
Great video Shawn. I am a drone newbie! Here in Eastern Canada ( N.S.) I am very familiar with the numb freezing thumbs while trying to learn the basics of drone flying. I have done a search...can you recommend where to source the photography mitts? Thank you 🙏
photographygloves.com/collections/photography-glove That’s where I purchased them from there a little bit pricey there are cheaper alternatives on Amazon. Vallerret Does make a nice quality gloves though.
would there be ANY permanent damages to the DJI mini 2 if you were to fly between -10°F to 10°F with mild wind? Would anything need to be re-lubricated, or will batteries degrade?
No permanent damage. As mentioned just keep your batteries worm and flights short. Try not to many aggressive moves sometimes the gimbal does not perform as well and you can get jitters in the video
I would check the law in the country you are going. There are battery protectors for when you fly which basically are "explosion proof" packages. See below link. Also, if my memory serves me correctly, some countries require you to store batteries in these bags, even when not using them... Do an Amazon search for "li-po safe bag"...
It’s a good question I’ve never flown in anything too cold that caused the drone not to fly. I think the Drone can handle some pretty extreme cold problem lies in the camera and Gimbal when it gets too cold you can get some Jell-O and vibrations in the video As the Gimbal does not perform properly
in my case I was flying MA2 (wanted to shoot fireworks on new yers eve) flight took 3 min. in temp. around -1C-0C but humidity was high, I dindt do the math and havent check dew point, so drone got icing quite fast, in my case first there was alert on cotroler that there is high overload on rotors and It demand immidiet landing, then sound. of rotors was strange. Just 1m above ground when i wanted to land drone just fell down like brick. On the edge of blades it was thin tube of ice perfectly attached to it. I was suprised how quickly icing came in into play. luckly I was above my garden. But please be aware of that. Planes are going down as cause of icing so little drone will go down as well.
@@wqlf_yt it all depends on humidity of air, it is called dew point. icing accurs when there is lots of moisture in air, and temp are around below 0’C you can do calculations in dew point calculator there are planty of it in internet (now even new iOS on iPhones shows wheater and dew point) but as well you need to provide humidity of air not only temperture. to do calculations. Flying in winter is fun but always with respect of humidity, temperature, time
Tried to fly my mini 1 in - 18 in the mountains. It really hated it. Next time I will start with warmer batteries. They really should have a heater for the battery built it but I assume that adds cost for marginal customers.
I’ve never had a problem with snow melting and causing moisture that could cause damage. The biggest thing you have to worry about is ice building up on the propellers. But as long as you keep the flight short bring it back in and inspect you should be OK
The only problem i have with flying in the cold is that my phone dies. if I look in Airdata, at minus 3C the temperature of the battery goes up all the way to 40 Celsius during flight, so no problem there. I am warming them up on the car heater before i put them in at around 20 Celsius. the phone is the problem. it does not last one drone battery.
Is the recommended operating temperatures for the dji drones, like your mobile phone, or your radio? it's just a number set from factory to make sure they won't get complaints. Looking away from batteries, anyone here have tested the drones in proper cold or snowy weather conditions?
Yes I do get A Warning from time to time. I fly a lot of time in the cold temperatures but yet to have any problem. As long as you keep the flight short swap out for a fresh warm battery but the other battery warm back up. The mini is really small doesn’t generate a lot of heat to keep that battery warm when flying
I have never had a problem with that and I have flown a lot in the winter as I live in Canada. The only thing is sometimes the moisture will build up on the props and freeze. So you do have to keep an eye on that
Ive read that you shouldnt fly below freezing because temps that low can damage the intelligent flight battery, is that true or not because i dont wanna take the risk of damaging a battery that expensive.
It will not damage the battery. Any battery does not perform well in cold weather, and keeping the batteries warm before you fly can allow you to fly safely. Once the drone is in motion, there’s enough heat generated internally to keep them at a safe temperature. It’s also a good idea to keep the flights short and not push it like you would on a warm sunny day.
I've had my Mavic Air 2 for several months and have flown it hundreds of times and today for the first time I noticed jello, but after about 2 minutes of flight it mysteriously went away for the remainder of the flight. No idea what caused it since I always fly with an ND filter over the lens, even a clear one for low light conditions to keep debris off the lens. I will say that even before I began using ND filters I never encountered this issue. I hope this is just a one off issue. I wander if somewhere during the first few seconds of flight some debris may have got stuck on one of the props which eventually got flung off during flight. I also considered the possibility of one of the bearings on one of the motors might be going bad. I'm open to ideas if anyone has any. I can say that it was about 45 degrees F. today but I have flown in similar temperatures before without encountering this issue. Now 45 degrees F. isn't that cold but this is the first and only time so far I've noticed this issue. I was flying in sport mode today, so that may have had something to do with it.
I am posting this here in case you don't still look at the original Mini comments.... my mini will NOT fly straight... it crabs at an angle... what can I do to cure this... thanks for any help you can give!!!
Well two things that I would recommend. Make sure you do a compass calibration and then I am you calibration. If that does not fix it then there could be a problem with the flight Controller and I would contact DJI about getting a replacement
HELP# HI! I always fly over the bay at Miami Beach, FL. There is a way to set a "LOW TERRAIN, LOW ALTITUDE WARNING" on the Mavic mini2 or Air 2. I get very distracted and lost all altitude while moving the left joystick to rotate the drone. A "low altitude warning" would be life-saving for my drone. I could set it to any altitude I the warning to be activated. The idea is to increase altitude if I get below, e.g., 5 or 10 meters. Then prevent it from crashing into the water. I already lost the Mavic mini and the Mavic 2. I can't retrieve them from the bay floor. I am afraid to buy a new one and make the same mistake.
I think you should first practice basic movements in a safe and open place and when you feel ready, then try to fly over the bay, if you do not want to lose a third drone 😉
Good day! If you want to kill your Mini 2, fly in the cold. Mini 2 is designed for many flights only in positive temperatures, for minus there are professional drones, such as the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise Dual. Enjoy your flight!
