You're welcome! I had one for my DSLR but didn't know it existed for the DJI Pocket 2. My expectation where pretty low but it was impressive! One thing to note is that it doesn't work when city light use LED lights.
Thanks so much! I had no idea it could take that good quality pics at such a low light level! I've done a few daytime timelapse and dusk hyperlapse. Next time I'm out of the city, I'm going to try it! Props to Freewell too for producing a clear sky for the DJIP2! Subscribed!
Thanks! I hope you will enjoy it! I have a few other video about the Pocket 2 if you are interested: ru-vid.com/group/PL6kUdfoIX4tzTPjl6ZRD2Ju7tJKCHAR1j
thank you for the video! after watching I ordered a filter for myself it has already come. there are a lot of clouds in the sky and there is no opportunity to take pictures yet. I'm looking forward to thank you again
Thanks for the great video. I'm considering on getting the Pocket 2 for travel and holiday videos. Its great to know I can get pretty decent astrophotography photos/time-lapses whenever I'm not with my main gear.
Good video; pocket2 does amazingly well. Although it might have been easier to aim the camera at dusk, so it was ready to go when you wanted to start photos. Either way involves extra time in the cold, so I guess it depends on your preference. 😉
It definitely would be better! The problem is that it’s really hard to know during the day when the condition are going to be perfectly clear at night. We have a lot of low hanging clouds which will not be considered on “clear night” predictions. With all of that being said, I know by hart these locations so it’s not a big deal for me to go there at night but I would definitely plan my shoots during the day if it was a completely new location!
I already have a few videos on astrophotography! I suggest you go through them because I use the techniques to edit the picture/create a time-lapse for this one. ru-vid.com/group/PL6kUdfoIX4tzkZ5_Np2w4YNkimdcZtoYo
Such a good video, yet again. I like how you physically identify where the light pollution is, and later you show photos with and without the filter. And all your photos & videos are stamped with all relevant data. It may seem obvious but some people don’t do it or don’t make it as clear. Are there any cheaper alternatives to Lightroom for someone starting out? It’s just disappointing to see that it’s only available as a monthly plan for people like me who won’t (at least at this stage) use it much - it’s like joining a gym when you don’t intend to go very often. Thanks.
Thanks for your continued support! 😍😊 I am happy to hear that you like the details, I try assuming that people don't know what I am talking about in my videos to make them more approachable. I would highly suggest Polarr Photo Editor (www.polarr.com/). They have apps for all platforms and almost all the features from Lightroom for free! I am planning on making a video to compare this app to Lightroom 🙂
Loïc Bellemare-Alford Excellent. Thank you. By the way, your written English is better in my experience than that of the average native English speaker who comments online (either on RU-vid or elsewhere). It’s impressive.
A very good video that will help me a lot, thank you. I will buy the filter. I look forward to trying some of those time lapses and maybe some Aurora borealis again if I ever get back to Iceland or Norway at the right time of year. Subscribed and liked , of course!
Thanks! I am glad to hear you liked the video! Getting some photos/videos of a Aurora borealis is definitely on my bucket list of things to get in the years!!
@@loicba Definitely do it! I will admit to being a bit deflated seeing them: I didn't get the cool colours - at least not with my eyes. The camera however, picked them up nicely! (to my relief!). Maybe it's a male colour vision thing. We got a short trip to Iceland that I extended by a day. It include a Northern Lights coach trip. If you didn't see them you go another coach trip free to try again. The xtra day gave us that option, but we didn't need it as we saw them in two locations on the same night! You can look at my amateur results on my other channel if you like. It's called Terry McGeary (the video I think has Aurora in the title). Thanks for an encouraging video.
95% + of my pocket 2 is devoted daily to Timelapse photos (sunrise & sunsets, etc) here in NYC, I also use a professional filter. I've been bitching and complaining that the pocket 2 is not as quick to focus or as sharp as the original OSMO pocket when it captures birds, airplanes even ufo's. (and would sometimes be completely out of focus when I download to my computer.) (In defense of the pocket 2 though, I have only been using the factory settings, with a couple tweeks.) I will purchase this filter. (Thanks , Nice Video) Dark/Black nights like in your video would be nice.
Thanks! I have very mixed feelings about that, our upload speed is currently 0.4 Mbps so it takes around 24h to upload my videos. Starlink is one of the most promising solution. On the other hand they are a disaster for astrophotography. I am still hopeful, Starlink is aware of this problem and started testing different coatings to reflect less light (it's not a huge success but a step in the right direction!)
Allô Loïc, i have a question with timelapse. Your video is pretty clear. Did you tried stars timelapse in a non stable ground, meaning for example on a sailboat while sailing? what are you recommendations? Can Pocket 2 follow an specific or group of stars and the gimble follow them in order to have an steady time-lapse while sailing? Thank you very much!
This is a complex question because there are so many variables at play. It could technically work if the sail boat is stable enough but I would be surprised that in practice it is. I tried taking some timelapse from my dock and just walking on it is enough to ruin the shot. Remember, for each photo, the camera needs to be stable for 8-10 seconds.
This is amazing, a shame youtube compresses the video which ruins the picture quality. is there a lot of grain with dark footage or can filters minimise that? I have a POket2 as well, I wanna try this out. 😃
Thanks! I am working on more mobile photography content that I will release soon! With that being said, I won't only be focusing on mobile photography on the channel. I have a few ideas I want to test out and while the channel is slowly growing, it's the time for me to find what type of content I prefer creating in the long run.
The problem with doing a night shoot of star is the osmo pocket hunts in low light, even in afs. If only it has Manual focus. I did countless times doing timelapse and it end disappointed since after doing 5 hrs the video ends uba blurry most of the time. The only way to do it in afs if there is a decent night source like a house where u can tap to focus on it.
Yep you are exactly right, that's the most annoying thing about this camera 😥I really wich they give us some manual focus control. I suggest you go comment on this thread to get DJI's attention! forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=230963
I would wait! Based on rumours the new one is supposed to come out this fall. I think my review of the Pocket 2 still holds up: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j35Xy3ibRxc.html
I've been playing around with mine since seeing your video. I also got the light filter. Just wondering why my video and pictures come out so blue ? How did you get yours to look more black like the night sky. I also have the Light Room App.
Oh that's all about the color temperature! When taking shoot at night, you should manually set it to something that look good for you. If you take RAW images, you can change it afterwards in Lightroom in the colors tab.
Amazing❤️. Can you tell me how I can set my Dji Osmo Action Cam for a starlapse? I don't really understand the "duration" because I can set only till 5h max.
I don't remember the exact settings, but I think it's 10 second interval, 1h duration. You will also have to set custom settings for long exposure, but I will let you listen the video for those. The duration is the time it takes to capture timelapse, the output duration is different. If you take a 1h (3600s) timelapse (the duration), with an interval of 10s (so 6 images per minute), you get an output duration of 20s seconds.
the insta360 go is small action camera stabilization is software based, this is a gimbal camera. if youre going to do videos daytime, you can just strap the insta to the necklace and walk around. but it wouldnt do as good in low light.
When I look up the freewell night pollution lens it says the 1st pocket I don’t see pocket 2 on it does it still fit the pocket 2 or does it have to directly say pocket 2 on it to be compatible?
It's bigger than the Google Pixel 4a lens (the 4a 5G has the same lens) but I wouldn't recommend it because it has strong magnets and the Pixel phones have a bad history of fragile camera parts that can be easily broken.
So I’m about to pull the trigger on buying a pocket 2. Just reading the specs and details about everything and comparing it to the iPhone 13pro or whatever the new one is. My wife has the iPhone 13 and it takes great night shots. And I don’t want to get the pocket 2 and be disappointed in the night shots capability. Anyone have both and can share your thoughts would be great.
Don't buy the DJI Pocket 2 for astrophotography... You can do it but the results are not great. You are better off with a Pixel 4a for astrophotography. Check my profile for some video on that.
@@loicba yeah watched it. I have the iPhone 10/X whatever you want to call it. And it’s has no night photo capability at all. My wife had the 12 pro or the 13 not sure. And hers takes nice night shots. I wanna say it does hyper lapse or all the lapses. But I’m always doing Timelapse at cool spots. And it sucks having your phone tied up for hours sometimes. Astrophotography isn’t my main goal. But the shit you got have actual stars in the image so it’s a 100% better than what I’m working with. It’s just tough to click on the purchase button and be pissed that I didn’t research it as much as possible. So I’m trying. Thanks for response. Lmk if u have any more thoughts
@@judd0112 that's a good point! Yes if your goal is just to have stars in a timelapse, the DJI Pocket 2 can definitely capture that! To get the best results possible, you can take RAW images and apply a quick edit to them but even straight out of the camera you can see the stars.
@@loicba yeah see my iPhone X stars don’t even show up. And can’t take a picture of the moon either. Won’t focus correctly. I’m hoping and I’m sure the pocket 2 can at least get a foot moon shot. But I’m sure the iPhone 13 can also.
I am not sure what I am doing wrong but I set my custom point sand then go to start recording the time lapse but it does not start? I am using the app via wifi on phone.
Just to make sure, you add at least two points? I also think the camera might refuse to take the time lapse if it can’t focus so this is why I change the autofocus to single point (AFS) and manually focus.
@@loicba The focus might have been the issue. Also, the sd card may have been full. I formatted card and rebooted and it worked. Now, I need to experiment with power supply for longer time lapses than the battery will allow. Thanks
Happy to hear it worked! Yes a full card could definitely be the culprit! A battery pack is also a great idea, it helps so much to use the DJI Pocket cameras for longer
I didn't apply any stabilization in post processing for this video! If you are taking about the timelapses, the are on a tripod which explains why they are so stable. The movement comme from the fact that the gimbal head can turn around instead of having to turn the complete camera!
You have two choices: 1. focus on something in the foreground than farther than 1.84m (everything in the image will be sharp). For example, lights of house or things like than should work 2. Find a bright star and focus on than one. You might also have planes or satelittes than can be bright enough for the camera to focus on.
Good question but no! The camera doesn't move while taking the picture, it moves between the shots. It's very quick to move the gimbal to the new position.
@@loicba I detected slight gimbal movement to the right just before it stopped exposing and the picture is blurry. Not all the time... I don't know what cause the problem. It's even a topic on the DJI website in which others claimed the same thing.
No, you want to keep to ISO as low as possible. The higher you go, the more noise you get (the ugly grain). At 6400 you can't really distinguish the stars from the noise 😕
@@loicba gotcha, so I should test it out a couple of times. I'm heading into a dark skies national park in my area, which basically means there is little to no light pollution and I'll be going during a new moon during the meteor shower, so no illumination besides the stars. Thanks for the info!
@@loicba Hi, back again. I was wondering if you have any setting recommendations for sunsets and sunrises? or if you might be thinking of doing a tutorial for it on the pocket 2?
I hope you will have some clear skies! Sunset are pretty easy, just expose to make sure it looks good when you start. For sunrises it's tricky because you need to underexpose. I don't know if you saw my other video where I talk about using ND filters to take some timelapse: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EY4kOFHPilo.html. I like having a shutter around 1/20s second and the iso as low as possible. I also always use the the Video+JPEG or RAW option to have a higher resolution timelapse.
Yes! The app, ProCam X, that I showed in my Pixel 4a video about capturing the stars has an intervalometer mode, meaning it can automatically capture the photos one after the other. You will see how you can stick the files together in my next video!
The DJI Pocket 2 has a 64MP but produces better images at 16MP by using a technology called "pixel binding". It basically that each final pixel it will use 4 pixels on the sensor. It helps reduce noise because if 1/4 pixel has noise, it knows that the value should be the one of the three others.
Are you recording by yourself/alone? How I wish I can do the same, Im not confident enough to vlog/make a video. Anyway, Thank you for the tips and the creating this type of video 💕
You’re welcome! It depends, these days, yes I am mostly alone when making the videos. Before COVID I made most of them when being out with friends and family. It’s normal to be scared when starting out, we all are! I actually tried to make a few vlogs over the years that never ended up being a video. Most of them I didn’t even bother editing them. It’s really hard getting started and if you look back you can see that I was very awkward in front of the camera just a year ago! If it’s something you want to do, just do it. Don’t wait to be “more confident” because that’s just an excuse. It doesn’t need to be good but by doing it you will learn. You should start by making something small, maybe just vlog with your phone a walk you are taking? Or record yourself inside talking about a funny story. Again the goal isn’t to publish it but just to learn and build your confidence up. It’s probably going to be terrible at the beginning but that’s okay! I started filming over 12 years ago and I still learn loads of new things everyday, it didn’t just happen overnight .
@@loicba Yay, thank you for that advice. I greatly appreciate that you spend your time to tell me about your knowledge and experience. Keep safe, stay healthy and God bless 💕
It's PhotoPills (geni.us/lba-photopills). It's a paid app that has many photography related features. If you only want to find stars, constellation, sun, moon, etc. Stellarium (geni.us/lba-stellarium) is a great, free, option!
@@loicba got these lens years ago. I used the sigma 50 1.4 art, sigma 35 art 1.4 and old tokina first version 11-16 @ 16mm f2.8. I just use a dummy battery connect to a battery bank so I can do night laps for 5-7hours without worrying battery drain.
I definitely won't be replacing my DSRL for this but it's good to know that if I am outside and don't have my DSLR, I can still use it to make a nightlapse
@@loicba I would definitely use it for video footage even in quite low light situation. But doing night photography, is another matter. The result is poor and it will be of no commercial use (if not personal interest maybe)
I personally wouldn't use this camera for commercial use at all. It's made for people like me that mainly make internet videos, where content is more important than quality!
@@loicba oh OK because I live in the UK and it was really hot for a few days and the DJI was getting hot. People say that if you shoot in 4k it starts to get hot
In my case, ISO 200 isn’t enough to get some detail in the foreground and show the stars. It’s very commun when taking stars to boost the ISO and recover the image in post-processing.
